Tiger cubs ready to roar

It’s been a season to forget for many Wests Tigers fans, but Saturday afternoon’s victory over St George Illawarra was a glimmer of hope for the future. Not only was it their first win in six weeks, moving them one place up on the ladder, but it was a win that displayed just how good the next decade could be for the joint venture if they keep the majority of their youngsters together.

Their 17 man squad had 10 players aged 22 or under, five of whom are still eligible of the Holden Cup competition. The average age of the squad was 23.8, and that was including Lote Tuqiri (33) and Braith Anasta (31). The names have been talked about internally for a few years, the likes of James Tedesco, David Nofoaluma, Tim Simona, Luke Brooks and Curtis Sironen. Add to that Aaron Woods (22) and Marika Koroibete (21) on the injured list, and a host of names in the Holden Cup squad who are expected to star in the future, and things can only look bright for the club.

All these players have the talent, the work ethic and the football smarts to succeed, but the most important thing they have is a winning culture and attitude. Unlike the early years of the joint venture, these kids have been successful in their junior representative years. In 2012 & 2013, Balmain won the SG Ball competition and the National Under 18 Championship, their first victories at that age group in 30 years. Western Suburbs have been regular finalists in the Harold Matthews competition, and SG Ball finalists in 2011\. In 2012, Wests Tigers won the Holden Cup for the first time. This group of players has emerged in a time where not only were they winning regularly, but they expected to win.

When Tim Sheens joined the club in 2003 the club was in turmoil on and off the field. He only had one option, to invest in the junior resources, and (ironically) it was a premiership winning SG Ball team from Western Suburbs and a team of finalists from Balmain which formed the bulk of his squad over the next 3-4 years. The club knew they were on a winner, but their shock premiership in 2005 was even somewhat of a shock to themselves.

New CEO Grant Mayer has made no secret of the fact that the club are targeting 2016 onwards as their big success years, and with a group like they have it is the logical approach. They probably don’t need to set direct limits on such progress, as Wests Tigers would have learned when they won their only NRL premiership in 2005.

As Luke Brooks and Nathan Brown showed on Saturday, an NRL debut at the SCG doesn’t faze them, and if that’s a sign of things to come for this group of kids at Wests Tigers, Vision 2016 may just come a year or two early.

Jim Beam Smooth Move of the Week
The result may have meant nothing in regards to the finals, but games like the one between the Tigers and Dragons can still produce big moments. Two of these happened within two minutes, as James Tedesco managed to squeeze his hand under the ball as Leeson Ah Mau looked certain to score right on halftime, then Curtis Sironen snapped up a Bronson Harrison offload and sent Tim Simona away for what is becoming his trademark runaway try.

I absolutely love this! It's something we haven't had since the lone season of 2005 and I can't wait to see this winning culture played out on the field. I just hope I'm still around in 2-5 years to enjoy the ride.

I just cant wait for the day when I think we are a good chance of beating any of the top sides most weeks. You look at Manly, most seasons their in the hunt at the end of the season, thats what I want from our team, plenty of good years and I think we are heading in that direction.

We are going in the right direction. The good thing is, I can't even pick the side for next year because of all the quality in juniors and some good solid buys (not marquee signings but solid players).

Everyday questions like :

- Austin, Anasta or moltzen at 5/8?
- Korobeti, Lawrence or Richards for outside backs?
- Blair moved back to lock, second row or bench impact ?

I am happy with any outcome which makes me so excited for next year. The young kids are knocking on the door of the NRL and now I feel people will have to perform week in and week out to keep the name in the squad for next year.

A good few years a head of us, cannot wait.

Marion Seve was the best center at the school boys carnival IMO, but I also think it was the weakest carnival in quite a few years. He has potential, and if he works hard may make it. He is not in the same class at this stage of say Dylan Walker or our 2 halves from last year s Australian Schools side which was amazing strong year.
We do have a plethora of young stars coming through the club at both NRL and NYC level.

makes you wonder.. we were the nyc grand final runner ups in 2009… by now with this logic we should've been premiers.

as much of a cliche as it is... doesnt matter how much talent you have- unless you have a coach/advisor or someone who can bring out the best in them, it's useless.

from that team from memory: fifita to sharks, mullaney eels, lui cowboys, dwyer injured, schirnack bros?, woodsy is still here. from what i can tell, not many have made first grade. you can blame the player's attitudes, lack of direction, lack of talent perhaps... just some thing is not adding up. maybe even it all starts at the top from the board, who knows?

If we had of kept Fifita we would have made the 8 this year. One key part of retention strategy which has put us squarely on the back foot.

The 2009 team didn't have that many stars as such, but were a solid team. Woods, Dwyer and Fifta were the only ones really tipped to play first grade, and not only play but be rep players. Mullaney was always a maybe due to his size.

Our current teams have many more players who cold be solid first grade players, and still a few stars. In general a lot more of our current players are likely to make first grade than from 5 years ago.

Seve could play NRL next year. He'll start off in NYC, and if he's doing well will start playing NSW cup as well perhaps by mid season. There's only so much you can learn by scoring 30 tries in 15 games. Of course it all depends on fitness and form, and he is coming back from a major illness but he could very quickly become a realistic first grade option for 2015, with possibly getting a game or two towards the end of the season. We don't currently have any juniors quite like him (size, strength, skill and pace).

Liolevave (sp?) could also be dynamite!

When are we going to finally let this go and accept Fifita is gone!

Some still mourn the loss of Prince so the Fifita crying has a while to go yet. Hopefully BMM and Nathan Brown will step up next year and ease the pain

Seve is no chance to play NRL next year.
