Tigers eye Milford as Warriors prepare $3.5m offer to teen

@happy_tiger

I agree

How we use this 1.7 mill is so important.

In fact, if there is not someone worth signing for next year , I would just use it to upgrade local juniors or go for cheaper signings for a year (Yes it would mean a tough year next year), and then have an extra 1.7 mill to hopefully go gangbusters for 2021. What we don't want, is for that 1.7 mill to be not available in 2021 and have signed a bunch of "ok players", like the Cleary situation where he just signs whoever because they are there. 2021 seems a year alot of talent is available, so if one more hard year for a better future is what it is, then I am okay with that. Its been too long to get this wrong.

Milford is a very good player however, he has been badly used at the Broncos. They packed weight on him to play 5/8 with Nikorima and played two running halves with no kicking game.
Broncos just paid 400k for Kahu which is bad but shows they will likely move Isaako to fullback as Oates is in the other wing.

He’s a definite improvement at fullback for us and also Corey is a huge upgrade for whoever we played at wing last year. Will allow our depth at centre to be Momo, Talau and possible signings to come.

Really comes down to cost as he is a big risk. 2 years at 500k p.a. I do this deal without blinking.

They didn't just spend 400K on Kahu by choice, he has gone back there for the last year of a 3 year deal he signed back in 2018. Kahu managed to negotiate his release so that the Broncos would still have to honour his contract if he chose to go back there for 2020. I don't think they'll be going out of their way to fit him into the 17...

Crikey, they must have dopes in charge atm.

If we swapped Mbye for Milf would that make the naysayers say yes?

Id prefer to keep both

Mbye at hooker abd Milf at fb trasitioning into 5/8

The Cap allocation doesn't work that way ..you must spend to the cap floor around 96% of the allocated cap it doesn't get carried forward..upgrading contracts doesn't get you far..we have 14 players coming of contract at the end of 2020 with Twal and Talau the pick of the bunch you could upgrade and frontload and extend them the rest no one wants here now...

We need to fill 5 spots 3 of which IMO should be quality established First Graders..

We could possibly do a Rorters as they did with Maloney when they signed him 2 years out when he was with the Warriors say by signing Arrow for 2021 and pay him some from this years cap but I think that loophole may have been closed and you still need to have a body in this years Roster..

The main problem I have with Milford coming here, is that by all reports he will transition to 5/8 when Benji retires. He is a fullback only imo.

Some commentators have been talking about frontloading contracts. I am assuming that means we can pay Brooks $750k for 2020 and $0 for 2021. That might help, but only for 2021.

With talk about Milford and Moylan may be coming to the tigers, what about we sign a good young fullback . just look at Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad he was playing state cup for the warriors and he turned out pretty good for the raiders this year. Maybe we should do the same then look for a 5/8 that will compliment Brooks and the team.

@Geo why couldn’t we just frontload contracts? Is there a rule against it?

Brooks would be on say 500k a year..

Give him 1mil for 2020...

250k thereafter....

If he doesn’t step up next year, get rid of him ...any club would pay 250 for him

@Sunnycoast_tiger Agreed!! Not sure how long he is signed to the Storm for,but that Nicho Hynes seemed pretty good on debut earlier this year

Biggest worry about Milford is he has not even played well for Samoa, when fit, in those international games.

Everyone else is jumping out of their skins to play, and he still looks like he would rather be somewhere else.

Maybe it is just his natural body language, but he rarely seems motivated.

Why would we he change for us? Broncs 40 000 crowd, Samoa and what it means...still goes missing.

Why would he be more motivated at Cambo in front of 8000 on a cold June Sunday afternoon? (Serious question for those who want him)

Andre Niko from the Raiders.

Every player has value.

Would I want Milford? Yeah of course, he has a lot to offer.

Milford at 500k is a good signing, Milford anywhere near the million price is not a good signing. He does not play consistently good enough to be in that ball park.

Same with Josh Reynolds. Had we signed him for 300k there would be no issue, in fact a good signing. Signing him at 700-800k is the debacle we have.

Yeah I get that, but I just don't want us rushing signings like the Reynolds one to get by, as lets face it, theres not alot left for next year. So if we had to sign okay guys for just 1 year (so the funds were available for 2021), then I would do that. Last thing we want is more mid-low carders being signed till 2023 as thats all that is around.

Just a couple of points I would add after reading the most recent posts:

1. I cannot see us getting Moylan and Milford. I expect one or the other...or neither
2.If we save our money and spend in 2021 then I doubt that anyone will want to come here. We came 9th last year and have a much weaker roster currently considering the players that have left.

We need to purchase at least three established first graders and one back going into next year. We then need to cut half the roster coming off contract next year and rebuild key positions, so that the depth we are building in the lower grades can fit into an established team in 2022/23.

After having seen what Madge was able to do with Benji this year, it'd be fairly exciting what he could do with Milford who is still only 25. He genuinely has the potential to be anything if he can cut the weight and start enjoying his footy again

I gave this a like based on the faith I have in Madge more so then Milfords Attitude.

Themoney needs to be right especially as there doesn't appear to be a queue for his signature..

Nor a queue of players wanting to come to our club

Thinking that no decent, good players would want to come to our club is a very negative outlook and will only dig a deeper hole for the club. I agree with what both Pascoe and Madge said - there are plenty of good players, both established and about to establish themselves, coming on the market at this time of the year. If the club can sign at least two decent big name players from those avaiable more will very soon follow. Negativity is poison for Wests Tigers.
