**Tigers prepare to dump Benji Marshall in favour of young gun Luke Brooks**

BENJI Marshall's career at the Wests Tigers could come to a premature end on Tuesday as the club moves to make way for boom teenage halfback Luke Brooks to make his debut against Parramatta on Friday night.

In what is shaping as a watershed week for the struggling club, the Tigers will officially ask the NRL for a second-tier salary cap exemption so they can name Brooks on Tuesday.

The club will also seek permission to name Jarred Farlow to replace Robbie Farah after the inspirational skipper was on Monday ruled out for two weeks with a hand injury.

But debate over Marshall's future will overshadow everything else after another disastrous showing in Sunday's heavy loss to the Gold Coast.

Marshall had two runs for a total of 11m - and his effort had plenty questioning if his heart was still at the Tigers given his imminent switch to Super Rugby.

Over the past month, Marshall's form has got progressively worse.

He was also criticised for making a rushed trip to New Zealand last week to talk to the Auckland Blues just days before the game on the Gold Coast.

Marshall is expected to make his signing with the Blues official in the coming days.

Potter caused a furore when he benched Marshall for the round 10 clash against South Sydney but most critics of that decision would now agree Marshall's form no longer justifies his place in the team.

The only thing saving Marshall from an inglorious end to his NRL career is his reputation.

It would be a massive decision for Potter to dump the superstar with only five weeks left in the regular season and Marshall four games short of 200 matches for the Tigers.

Marshall has given great service to the club but his form this year, and especially in the past month, justifies the club's decision to let him walk out on the final two years of his contract.

A key reason the Tigers couldn't afford to keep Marshall on the $1 million-a-year handshake agreement he had with former chief executive Stephen Humphreys until the end of 2017 was the emergence of Brooks and Mitchell Moses, who both recently agreed to extended deals.

The Tigers have now lost their past four games and Friday night's clash against the last-placed Eels is shaping up as a wooden-spoon shootout.

Potter said Brooks's time had arrived. Asked if the 18-year-old was ready for the NRL, Potter said: "I think so. He has proven himself in State Cup and he is doing a great job for the under-20s.

"I don't think that there is any doubt that he needs to be challenged at this level.

"It is the next stage in his development, so we will go through the process and see what happens."

Potter could still name Marshall at five-eighth or start Curtis Sironen alongside Brooks, given they are the most likely pairing for next year.

The Tigers are on the limit of their second-tier salary cap as a result of the club's shocking run of injuries.

While the second-tier salary cap is designed to stop the richer clubs stockpiling the best talent, Brooks is a local junior who played for the Leichhardt Wanderers and went to school at Holy Cross Ryde.

"They put these rules in place to try and protect the game and I understand that, but he is a local junior and it makes sense to let him play," Potter said.

"We have to have one eye on next year and both eyes on trying to win the next game. We have to name a team that is capable of doing that.

"There is no doubt it would be great for the surrounding district that (Brooks) comes through and gets his shot at first grade and that will help him for the future.

"I just want him to get a couple of games before the end of the year and get a sniff of what it is like."

Whether Brooks can be cleared of second-tier cap restrictions doesn't have anything to do with Benji Marshall. Surely if we can get Brooks cleared to play, he will play half and Benji 5/8.

Who said Sironen /Brooks is the favored choice for the halves in 2014, why are we playing Siro in the forwards now if that's the thinking?

There's also the issue of captaincy - Benji captained the side in the second half vs the Coast. I expect he will be captain vs Parra as well.

At the moment all the negativity is with Marshall & Tauber, the club in this whole mess is looking OK - so to speak.
If Potter were to dump him for the rest of the year, all the negativity would shift to the club ("Look at how hes been treated blah blah")

Plus as Paris mentioned, Brooks' clearance and Marshall being dumped have no connection

Media beat up imo

It shouldnt happen for a couple of reasons
1\. Marshall has been a great servent and deserves to go out in a good way
2\. Benji will bring in bums on seats for his final games and we need the cash
3\. It makes the pressure on brooks if he is not only playing but replacing marshall too much - its going to be extreme anyway but imagine the presure and likely interaction with teammates if he replaces benji
4\. We are already loosing Robbie next week , too much to also loose benji

Reasons it should happen
1\. Benji has been horrible out of form and is getting worse

Yes you'd think Brooks and Benji will be the halves, Siro to 2nd row.

However, a few games shy of 200?…...what the hell is going on Benji? I mean really, you'd think you'd be doing everything you can, which is maybe the problem, but on Sunday he really looked disinterested, just passing the ball to runners, barely taking the line on himself.

As much as many people think they should (and I'm one of them) it wont happen….the season is shot...so let him have his fairy tale finish with the club...I'm just hoping for one last good game from him so I can actually cheer him with my head and not my heart these final 5 games.

I think it was a made up article. Potter keeps stating it will be Anasta and Brooks in the halves next year although I hope he has been watching some games and realizes Anasta is not the answer.

BB2 has it correct though. I'd love to see Brooks at 7 and Marshall at 6.

He has been a great servant in the past but I'm sorry, his form is so diabolical that dropping him is the decision that should be made with the future in mind.

It's not too much at all to lose him, regardless of whether Farah is playing or not.

On form he should be coming off the bench in State Cup, plain and simple.

Wests Tigers' bid to give boom halfback Luke Brooks his NRL debut against Parramatta on Friday night might have hit another hurdle, with the club also needing a second-tier salary cap exemption for rookie hooker Joel Luani.

Tigers coach Mick Potter told Fairfax Media after last Sunday's 36-6 loss to Gold Coast that the club would seek permission from the NRL to play Brooks against the Eels.

However, the loss of skipper Robbie Farah with a broken finger means Wests Tigers need to find a replacement hooker, and Luani also falls under the club's second-tier salary cap.

Having exceeded their second-tier cap long ago due to a horror run of injuries, the Tigers have been unable to give Brooks a shot at NRL level but it is believed an application for an exemption against the Eels would be looked on favourably as both teams are out of finals reckoning.

However, it remains to be seen whether the NRL would permit Wests to blood two rookies outside the salary cap.

With Tigers officials attending the funeral of former NSW coach Graham Murray in Brisbane on Monday, they are yet to lodge an application for either player.

The formal request will be lodged on Tuesday before the team to play Parramatta is announced on Tuesday.

Besides Farah, the Tigers are also without back-up hooker Masada Iosefa, who is sidelined after suffering a broken arm in their 17-12 defeat of Canberra six weeks ago.

X-rays on Monday revealed that Farah suffered a fractured finger in the loss to the Titans. He will miss up to two games. Farah's next match will make him the most capped Wests Tigers player in the club's history with 202 games.

The Tigers recently re-signed Brooks, Luiani and five-eighth Mitchell Moses, who are all considered future NRL players.

Brooks and Moses were last year's Australian Schoolboys halves pairing, while Luani played in last season's premiership winning Wests Tigers under-20s team.

"Joel has been playing a back-up role at hooker and in the back-row for the Wests Tigers NSW Cup team,'' Potter said after announcing Luani's new two-year deal.

"He is still very young but he has got a good shape about him and has a very bright future. He will be a good back-up for Robbie Farah when he is unavailable."

Brooks and Moses, both 18, were both re-signed for four more years.

Potter's job is on the line if we lose this I'd say and it would be beyond embarrassing to lose to Parra.
Who cares if he gets to 200 games, he's apparently achieved everything in the game anyway according to him.

Drop Marshall anyway and play Fulton ,Lawrence ,Ayshford ,Sironen ,Anasta ,whoever at 6

This is about changing our mindset and looking towards the future Benji isn't the future of the Tigers or rugby league

Tiges will get an exemption. I chose to believe that the NRL can see that Sydney's West (including Parra) need to see the young guys coming through. It will be a long offseason for fans, with the promise of future stars enough to keep interest up for the coming year.

I believe Benji and Brooks will play. I believe that if Benji plays like he has he will get hooked in the second half and Siro will go to 5/8.

Come on NRL, show us you believe in Sydney's west!

Everyone is saying Marshal deserves to get to his 200th game. He couldn't give a rats about the club why should we care about his 200 games, he has just pulled out of 2 years of his contract and his comments of late especially re Sheens reflect his attitude. Drop him and he will spit the dummy and go and I say good riddance, I remember those games this year when he was playing touch footy defensively.
A lot of people may not have noticed but I did when Sirro made his debut an played really well the next game he hardly got a touch and when Kirobete debuted he scored 4 tries yet the next game couldn't get the ball. Marshall couldn't stand see anyone else starring, Benji is number 1 in Benji's eyes and he always looks after number 1

Stuff playing Benji ,how about give a bloke a run who at least wants to be here

Does it really matter whether Parra beat us , pick Brooks ,Luani and Sironen and play them at 7,9 and 6

Forget the past and the present ,2013 is well and truly gone , the only thing we have now is the future ,lets make it the present and whatever happens ,happens

Stuff the NRL lets play them whether they say yes or no and lets the fans pay the fine if the Tigers cant afford it

I'd seriously kick a $1000 in if they dropped Benji and got a fine for playing non exempted players ,who's with me

What is the nrl going to if we breach the salary cap take our points off us woop de do . Why not bite the bullet start building for next year and put the guys that are leaving into state cup , we have done our farewells to the leaving players at both leichardt and Campbeltown . At least it might strengthen that side
