Tigers want to lock up Sheens before rivals come knocking

Forget Bennett…he will be coaching Souths in 2012\. Done deal. I wonder which other players will follow him there in 2012? There is the obvious one!

Darius Boyd –---> Souffs. Wesser is on his last legs.

On Sheens, dynasties take a while to create when you play by the rules. He has instilled a sense loyalty between the players and by doing so the Tigers have quite a harmonious playing group and we actually have players wanting to stay on. Give him another year, and if our success is reflected by a grand final berth, I'd extend his contract for another two years on top of that.

Coach Sheens has built this club and deserves to have the opportunity to reap some of the rewards of his strategy and hard work.

The Players Love him.

Don't forget that He created camp concord and painted it himself in his first off season.

An extra 2 years and give him the chance to name his successor.

The most important line in the Article is " He would be in Demand if he was a free agent"

We got one of the top 3 coaches at our club.

Enough Said

I would keep Sheens on for another couple of years. Taking him away would really be a knock to the playing group as a whole, plus juniors that see themselves playing under him when they make the top grade. Does success equal making the finals, or winning the grand final?? For so many years we had so many problems, and now it seems the club is running smoothly. Why change it when we are on the verge of becoming a club that makes the finals every year??

Give him as long as he WANTS, he came here & we were a disgrace & he built us up. the players love him & thats good enough for me. everything is running smoothly, lets keep it that way.

Heard Humphries interviewed on Talkin Sport and one thing that they talked about regarding Sheens contract extension was wether a coach can get stale after so many years in the game and a number of them at the Tigers. Humphries was quick to ensure them that Tim is very astute at keeping things fresh. One example was this pre season Sheens instigated the changing of the gym layout. Just moving equipment around to give a fresh taste to the place. Only a very small thing, but something that stood out for me. I think after years in the game Sheens knows how all these little things add up.

I'm happy to have him at the helm for as long as he wants.

Absolutely Tooth …...... I can't see anyone better around the club atm.

Tim has the respect of the players and the players want him as the coach so thats good enough for me.

I'm sure there are a few people on this forum who want Sheens locked up…

The Bennett situation is interesting isn't it?
If he goes to Souths then I wonder if the Dragons would try and poach Sheens?
Either way as a few other people have said now is the time for stability and on that situation alone Sheens should be secured.

If Bennett goes to Souths it will leave the door open for Brown to return home to the Drags, a few years older and wiser

Agreed.

Sheens has turned this place around, players want to play here and stay here. He should be able to stay as long as he wishes, just for the stability he brings alone.

We now have a squad where anything short of about fifth place should be seen as a very poor season. Last year we stormed home but for most part of the season we were firing on one cylinder. I see Sheens as a excellent coach, but Iam not yet convinced his time at the Tigers should be extended without having certain minimum standards achieved in the up comming season. Any contact must have some fair and achievable performance levels that must be reached.

Im hearing that wayne bennett will not be signing with the rabbitohs, so if we dont move to secure sheens im sure russel and his bags full of money will come knocking on tims door.

Marshall hopes to hitch wagon to his favourite coach - Sheens
Greg Prichard - Sydney Morning Herald
February 17, 2011

BENJI MARSHALL isn't interested in playing under anyone but Tim Sheens at Wests Tigers and wants the club to sign the veteran coach for the remainder of the superstar five-eighth's career.

That would mean another five years at this stage, as Marshall is contracted until the end of 2015, but there is every chance he will play for longer as he will be only 30 by then.

Tigers chief Stephen Humphreys has begun negotiating a new deal with Sheens, whose contract runs out at the end of this season.

Advertisement: Story continues below Sheens would prefer to remain at the Tigers but it remains to be seen if he and the club can make a deal.

Marshall, who at NRL level has only ever been coached by Sheens, was visiting schools with other Tigers players yesterday, and the Herald asked if he wanted Sheens to coach him for the rest of his career.

''Oh, definitely,'' Marshall replied. ''I'm obviously going to be there for the rest of my career - I'm signed for the next five years - so it would be great to see him re-sign and stay.

''If he doesn't it won't be the end of the world but I'd definitely be disappointed if he went.

''I've spent all my career under Tim, and I love the way he coaches and the way he lets me play.

''It would be a great shame to see him change to any other club because of the way he's turned our club around and the way he's helped me out throughout my career, so I might have to get in his ear the way he gets in my ear whenever my contract is up.''

Four-time premiership-winner Sheens is 60 but shows no sign of winding down his coaching career.

He is keen to continue at the Tigers but if the club cannot finalise a deal with him soon, rival clubs are likely to approach him.

''I don't think Tim is ever going to finish coaching,'' Marshall said. ''I'll probably be finished playing and he'll still be coaching, he loves the game that much.

''He's been a great mentor for myself and a great role model. He has really helped me a lot, on and off the field, and it would be a shame if he ended up leaving.''

The player's manager, Martin Tauber, said he wasn't surprised Marshall wanted Sheens to stay.

''Their relationship goes beyond just player and coach,'' Tauber said. ''They are friends, with a high regard for each other.''

Sheens has a tremendous ability to relate to young players. Marshall said it was because he was understanding and moved with the times.

''He's got this knack of keeping up with the game,'' he said. ''He gets out to that many games and watches how it evolves and he has evolved a lot of it himself.

''When I first got to the club he never used to joke around that much, he was quite serious, and then I think having all of us young guys around really loosened him up.

''You've got to be able to relate to your players as a coach. That's why he's been successful and one of the greatest coaches of all time.

''You don't get that just by a fluke. I think he's been able to relate to his players throughout his career.

''He definitely relates to me. He knows if I'm down or he knows if I need to be talked to - he can just tell. I don't know how he does it. If I'm struggling at home, he knows. He must be psychic or something.''

I'll have my 2 cents worth I would be surprised if Sheens does sign on again … there is going to be a few jobs open up by seasons end IMO and with clubs in the Money ,I just have the feeling he is moving on... if so it,s not the end of the earth .I get the same feeling with Lawrance I think he is going as well just the feeling I,m getting .
