Tim Johannssen #291

What is going on at our club, the thinking during the off season was we had a stack of depth at prop and now it's thin again.
What is causing all our prospects to fall off a cliff maybe they weren't that good from the beginning to make 1st grade.
So now it's prop and edge that we have shortcomings in why does our club keep throwing up problems.

Yeah hard to tell why.

The one who I thought was developing nicely was Jordan Miller...but we know how that ended. Kit has made some good strides forward this year as he seemed lost last year.

Having watched some Flegg middles this year, I don't see much coming through there either.

Richo always speaks about developing within and then recruiting the gaps. I think prop is a position we will need to continue being active in the player market (even for Cup/Development deals). As you said, the 4 players above are about it coming through the ranks at the moment.
Hopefully Jekope Sovau (Api's cousin) is just injured atm. He has an unbelievably high ceiling with his power & skill IMO. Saw some recent Insta stories of him in Fiji recently.

he has mate, unfortunately. hopefully makes a good fist of it wherever he goes next.

Noah still with us and likely to play Cup this week I hear.
Hey JR & @poopy_diaper ... one for the request list if you think it's possible down-the-track for the pod. How our pathways structure & resourcing compares with the likes of the Bulldogs & Panthers.

We hear Gould all the time waxing lyrical about how good the Bulldogs academy is for both personal & skill development, even have specialist position coaching, and we've seen first-hand the Penrith production line.

Whilst we have an enormous catchment, there has been a lot of concern in recent years of players actually progressing/developing in our system and ones with the right physical & skill profile being retained. Mac, your call-out in the recent pod why we never seem to produce big, tall, powerful props adds to this.

It would be a very interesting feature because our pathways system is the foundation for sustained success.

Huh?! Why? He was on your pod about 8 weeks ago talking it up for the new season then was barely sighted in our teams. I'd like Richo or the club to explain their strategy a little bc it makes no sense looking at it from the outside.

The pathways are headscratching atm.

I can only imagine with the last few releases that had occured TJ may have felt he will be upgraded from a 2nd tier contract. Yet, he missed out on even a vacant Dev Contract to Hope.

Anyone know if Miller or Faagutu has picked up a contract elsewhere? Disappointed that neither worked out. Miller was finding his stride in KOE and Faagutu was a stand-out in Flegg. They may have been handed top 30 contracts too early but that's a recurring problem at this club.

If you can't make the nsw cup side then why would you expect an upgrade. I mean it was only 1 yr before he gave up on nrl. Mayby it's commitment level more then anything

I’ve also found that odd - Miller I can understand with the legal stuff not turning up, but last I dug around Faagutu hasn’t landed anywhere either - odd for a kid as rated as he was

I think Faagutu is at parra

Not a loss. It baffled me how much people on the forum hyped him up and suggestions of him being an option for first grade.

The trials showed it all, he doesn’t have the physically for first grade. He got man handled by 19-20 year olds and was getting pushed back on most of his hit ups. Doesn’t have the strength or athleticism to be a first grader.

I reckon we would be going alright if we still had Teddy and Papenhauzen in the squad.
Awesome... yea, one fullback position but we hold onto the 2 greatest fullbacks in the game at the moment. .....

That said, you have a point there. We pushed Papenhauzen out as we were going to keep Teddy. Maybe if we thought about it and realised what was going to happen... We could have kept paps! I reckon he would still be here.

Wonder what went down for him to be shown the door or walk out the door?

He had a Development contract with us next season.
Left because he was annoyed he was playing off the bench in cup all? Or playing off the bench in cup because the club didnt rate him?

Chicken or egg. Either way its a shame because it was a good story.
