Tim Johannssen #291

Clearly not in our future plans and fully trust Richo with player decisions.
If not in our plans, not having a positive attitude or just not impressing there is no use keeping them in higher grades and stopping another player's progress (Not saying this is the case either).

Shame as I liked what I saw last year but I'm not a qualified footy brain like Banjo / Richo

But this goes against alot of what was coming out of the club last year. Its a position we are clearly very short in, even if he is reserve grade standard. Its a weird one.

Totally agreed.

I don't get this. Johannssen seemed like an actual good prospect. Surprised we did not release Tumeth or Matumua instead.
He didn’t ever really seem like a prospect. He’s a good player but very limited with a low ceiling potential wise. Johannssen struggled with the physicality of NRL players. It was clear from pre season trials, he was getting dominated by younger guys. If you’re going to play as a middle forward in the NRL you need to be able to hold your own.

Why stick with a 25-26 year old guy who you know doesn’t have the physical attributes to be a factor in the NRL ahead of a younger guy who has the potential to get there with development. It’s much more important that guys like Kit and Aho are getting minutes in Cup, even if they're not as good right now.

I’m not knocking him as a player but there are plenty of decent guys who unfortunately are good NSW Cup players, but just don’t have the attributes to really go any further than that.

Point is we need decent cup players still. Makes me think there was a directive that the development of other guys must be prioritised like Kit and his younger brother. Must admit I haven't watched a minute of Cup this year though, so maybe his performances warranted benching and then RMC, but it seems unlikely considering how poor the cup side has been.

I get that, but he was one of the better players in cup last year and they ran last... So what does that tell you?

Of course we want the cup team to win, but the priority is for the NRL team to win and development of players is crucial to that. If we want guys like Kit to develop the way we need them to, they need to be playing. We can't have a guy who isn't a long term NRL prospect playing 50-60mins and the top 30 guys playing 20-30mins. Otherwise those guys will leave, and the same people that get upset about Johanssen leaving will be the same people that ask "why cant we retain young talent". There's a bigger picture, and the club is finally starting to see it. Its a play right out of the Penrith development playbook.

I've watched all cup games but one this year and the reason we are losing is because we have an unsettled team, which is mainly due to injuries in first grade and in Cup. Its a trickle down effect unfortunately.

This is absolutely the right move.

Not a big loss , our reserve grade team is shat so clean it out , we should have 3 spots to fill by June 30 so maybe Richo brings new players over in 2025 June 30. And hep both nrl and reserve grade team.
Prop , Centre , Backrower

I feel the same about Tallyn. It's no good playing him for 25 mins a week. The kid needs more development in cup. We may as well play Hope for 20 mins and let Tallyn play long mins in reggies. He is only 19 and needs more development in my view.

Agree , give him next 5 weeks full games in reserve then bring him into nrl and play Appi for first 15 then bring TDS on 25 minutes , return with TDS for another 25 then Appi back on to finish off , Appi gets a good break and comes back as opposition tire

Tumeth was told he can go, but he did t want to…same with Matamua
Both Matamua and Tumeth are off contract this year or am I mistaken and they're off next year. With all these players in the lower grades moving on, seems our recruitment in the lower grades might be just as exciting as our N.R.L team, we're going to have a fair few spots to fill. Like so many people on the forum over the years have said, while we always look at a great signing for the N.R.L team, we have for the longest time lacked the players who are good reserve graders, yet arnt quite good enough for permanent first grade. Those are the depth players that can come in for a month or so to do a job and go back to reserve grade. We need these blokes for our depth, which we have always struggled with. Really interested who Richo and the development guys bring in. Imo it's just as important as signing gun first graders. If we don't have reliable depth and 2 - 3 injuries at once, it's virtually season over.

I believe the main issue within the club is how we handle lower tier players….for a club that has been on the bottom for a long time we really aren’t forgiving to a player underperforming.

The way we drop players to below cup doesn’t sit right. Especially when our cup team is coached even worse than our top grade. How can a player be excepted to perform in such a poor team.

It’s concerning, even senior players aren’t treated well if they show underperformance. If we want people to buy into the club then all players should be treated with a decent amount respect that isn’t conditional. I don’t believe this is happening.

This describes Koe and lower grades for the last 2 years. The other issues that is raising its head is lack of coaching and skills development at the club, you want players to develop and learn, and this is currently not happening at the Tigers, this area is one the points raised by moses.

Very well said Jimmy.

Look I am against depth, but we need Depth in Forwards. We really REALLY need depth in the forwards.

With Matamua and Tumeth on the outer, I would have thought Johannssen would have been a walk in.

We see how Samuela Fainu, being an average Manly player joins our squad and makes a hell of an impact. We can't cull forwards we don't have. Totally agreed someone like Johannssen would be very useful for 1-2 months in first grade and we have no depth there. That said I haven't been watching reserve grade and take the comments that he has been playing crap.

He's much younger than that. I think 23. Last year was his first year out of Flegg.

I don't really feel comfortable sharing the reasoning aside from Tim asked for a release and was granted it. I think he just wanted a change of scenery. Had a good first hit out for Souths and I expect he will go well there as they are very thin on middles. He's a great bloke so I wish him all the best.
