The Wests Tigers are going back to the future with the club appointing four-time premiership-winning coach Tim Sheens to a new role of head of football performance at the Concord club.

In a huge coup for the joint venture outfit the coach who guided the Wests Tigers to the club’s one and only premiership in 2005 will be back on deck by early July.

Sheens was a fan favourite at the Wests Tigers during his 10-year tenure where he guided the club into three finals series including the inaugural premiership

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe has been working on the Sheens deal for the past six weeks with Sheens to return from the UK in the coming weeks and do two weeks quarantine before getting his feet under the desk.

Sheens endured a messy exit from the club at the end of the 2012 season when he was sacked before later taking the club to court.

But Pascoe stressed his previous departure was not a factor in re-opening negotiations and the strong financial position the club is currently in allowed it to target his signature.

The position is a “floating role” where Sheens will be a sounding board for players as well as working in the area of recruitment, pathways and development.

“Tim can also be a sounding board for Madge if Madge wants that,” Pascoe said.

“It’s a floating role across the entire football department.

“Tim knows what it means to be Wests Tigers and has played a major role in shaping all aspects of this club — both on and off the field — to what it is today.

“Having Tim take on this new role will significantly strengthen our football department as a whole. We firmly believe that adding Tim’s experience, knowledge and insight into the game of rugby league will be of huge benefit to Wests Tigers.

“This continual investment into football only can occur when you are in a secure financial position. As a club, we have worked hard to get to that point and now it’s pleasing to see us building our capacities and capabilities to ensure we are successful long into the future.”

Pure Sheenius by the club! Really not sure how this will work out. It'll either be brilliant or back to the future.

Welcome back Mr Sheens . A big focus on the great financial position the club is in. We need to congratulate those for getting us to this position as there is no sustained success without a healthy financial position.

The success of this is going to entirely depend on whether Maguire and Sheens have synergy together, which is going to come down to whether they like and respect one another. If they have or can build a mutual respect and friendship this will work out very well for us. Two premiership-winning coaches running this footy club can only mean good things.

Madge would have played under Sheens wouldn't he?

The football department now out number the players. Every week there is a new job created.

Actually could be a master stroke, someone to take on some of Madge’s non coaching duties. Also someone who seems to be able to connect with players and player managers

Yeah actually, and he was a fringe first grader in his time at Canberra and Sheens was the coach there the entire time and won a comp while they were both there. So he probably has immense respect for Sheens.

He's always been great in developing young guys, and we have a few of them at the moment. This is real exciting for me.

Also Sheens is unlikely to be pushing for a fulltime head coaching role.

If there is one thing Sheens has, it's the respect of the wider football community. All the talking heads worship him because he either coached them, coached against and beat them, or they coached under him or is just friends with them. They don't call him Teflon for no reason. Nothing sticks, because he's everyone's mate.
