Wests Tigers are pleased to confirm that Tim Simona will remain with the Club for the 2017 season.

Simona has elected to take up an option in his contract and will continue to play for Wests Tigers until at least the end of next year.

A product of the Balmain junior representative system, the 24-year-old has scored 21 tries in 63 games for the Club since making his NRL debut in 2011.

Simona is currently in camp with the Samoan squad ahead of this weekend’s match against Tonga, which will be his fifth Test appearance after making his International debut in the 2014 Four Nations tournament.

The Doonside Roos junior said he was pleased to commit his future to the Club for another season.

“I’m obviously really happy to extend my time with Wests Tigers,” Simona said. “I love being part of the Club and playing with guys that I’ve known since I was a kid.

“To play another season at Wests Tigers is something I’m really excited about because I believe we have an exciting future ahead and we are headed in the right direction.

“I believe we can build something special with the group we have here and obviously that’s something I want to be part of.

“It was great to be back on the field last week and my goal for the rest of the year is to play every game and help the team build momentum while also improving my own attributes as a player,” he said.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said that Simona committing to the Club is important moving forward.

“We are pleased that Tim has confirmed that he will take up his option for the coming season and remain with Wests Tigers,” said Pascoe. “Tim has become a mainstay of our side over the last few years and we look forward to him developing further at the Club.

“We’re committed to building a strong NRL side and to have players of the calibre of Tim, plus Josh Aloiai, deciding to remain with the Club in the last week is a sign that we’re heading in the right direction,” he said.

Wests Tigers Head Coach Jason Taylor echoed Pascoe’s praise for Simona, highlighting the important role he plays at the Club.

“What I’ve really loved about Tim this season is his energy, he’s brought so much of that to our team and our performances,” said Taylor.

“His effort off the ball has been absolutely outstanding and then his creativity with the ball in his hands is as good as any centre in the game.

"Defensively he has kept improving, which has seen him reach a level where he is a real strong point in our defensive system,” he said.

How odd. He was reported as signing a two-year deal only last year - http://www.weststigers.com.au/news/2015/04/30/tim_simona_commits_t.html

I guess the 2017 part was an option in his favour.

no, no player is signed past next season, which means we will have a full salary cap to spend for 2018.

More good news for the club which is a great thing in light of the Eels debacle taking up headlines at the moment.

I like how we haven't committed to anyone for 2018\. The cap is unknown for that year and a lot of standard contracts have terms where you get percentages of the cap and rises according to percentage and not a monetary value. I think we are just being patient and waiting to hear before we start locking in players

I feel like, tactically, signing Simona is a pretty good deal. He's underrated ergo he wouldn't be on much. There are equally talented players in the NRL with higher profiles who would be earning bigger coin. He's someone I would lock in long term for that reason.

Though… the refusal to sign anyone beyond 2017 is giving me the creeps. Are we folding at the end of next year or moving or something?

My My My My Simona…good to see players committing ...

Sauaso next please...

Glad he is staying but would like to know what he is on. How many players do we have with options in their favour? Moses, Brooks, Lawrence, Simona. Anyone else?

You only have to look at how we go when he is not in the side to realise he is a quality player. Very good NRL standard player who plays in a very tough position

We can only assume that all contracts signed under the previous management were overvalued and back-ended, including those with extensions in the player's favour. Given how hard teams like the Sharks were chasing him i'd guess he's on maybe 400k. The extension could even be for somewhere around 450.

He's a good player but we've rarely got full value from his thus far. He needs to score more (but it would help if he got passed the ball more).

Great news as I'm a Simona fan.

But we need to get a fast winger outside him and a few more plays going his way to get the most out of the deal.
