Wests Tigers utility Blake Austin still keen to join Canberra Raiders

It's understood Potter and his coaching staff had denied Austin's initial request for a release to join the Raiders, but Potter's dismissal has now opened the door for the 23-year-old to make another bid to relocate to Canberra.
>
Austin had sought a release last week from the final year of his Tigers contract to join the Raiders on a multi-year deal from 2015, but it was rejected.
>
"Coaching staff have confirmed he [Austin] is part of their plans for next season," Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer tweeted last week.
>
But Austin's preference is still to come to Canberra, where he sees a better opportunity to establish himself as an NRL five-eighth and a stable home for his two young children.
>
Austin may not even wait until a new Tigers coach is appointed before again seeking a release from the Tigers.
>
Austin is only on a second-tier contract at the Tigers, who have earmarked youngsters Luke Brooks, 19, and Mitchell Moses, 20, as their future halves combination.
>
Austin can also play fullback, but the Tigers have heavily invested in re-signing James Tedesco, 21, after he backflipped on a three-year deal to join the Raiders.
>
The Raiders are understandably gun shy about talking up any potential recruits, having narrowly missed out on snaring targets including Melbourne's Kevin Proctor and Penrith's Josh Mansour. But Austin's signature would be a major coup for the club, given it is looking to solve issues in the halves next season.
>
A Penrith junior, Austin's career only really took off this year when he joined the Tigers and played 19 matches. The halves remains Canberra's biggest trouble spot for 2015.

I'd still be saying No…

I don't get the point of these stupid articles. The only quote they have is someone from the club DENYING it but their headline is of the contrary.

Second tier contract and being second choice for his preferred position and than the Raiders come along and offer him the world, of course he is going to ask for a release.

Be nice to have a coach who could sit down with him and thrash out a workable deal that would keep him happy at the Tigers for at least 2015.

Pointless at having unhappy campers just to prove a point. He proved this year what a quality player he is and I think he is worth a substantial upgrade even if its for only 2015

He has a contract
He was our best player in 2014.
He stays.
We give him an upgrade for 2015.
We sign him for 2016 and beyond if the new coaching brains trust want him.
If he spits the dummy he spends 2015 in NSW Cup on a second tier contract.
See who wants to buy him in 2016.
Simple. Business.

The thing I fear in this is if we deny Austin a release and he misses out on doubling, or tripling his income elsewhere, how happy is he going to be at the Tigers next season? He could well spit the dummy and play the season out in State Cup which benefits no one.

Personally I'd give him the release.

He would do himself no favours by spitting the dummy and spending next year in State cup. I'd imaging, being a professional football player he'd play his best in the hope of gaining another descent offer.

I disagree; I doubt he would cut off his nose to spite his face. He is acting rationally in asking for a release - cant blame him at all. I expect he would continue to act rationally and not devalue his market value by being satisfied playing State Cup. But the club has him under contract and he is a valuable player. It should not be beyond the wit (sorry I take that back); hopefully the club can offer him an upgrade which reflects his importance to the team. Better still, negotiate something long term. Any half wit could see we are better off with him; dont need a coach to make that call.

If he wants to have a dummy spit he can spend the season as 19th man for RMC

This is what we need to do , stop pussyfooting around these blokes and show them whose boss

I can't see Austin like that , he seems to be made of sterner stuff

Another way to look at it and maybe I would do this…... If I was on second tier and played a blinder of a season.....even if I wanted to stay, I would ask my manager to start the conversation, put the feelers out, get some nibbles and see if I could get the WT's to upgrade and extend my contract ..... Just saying.

The NRL is set to investigate St George Illawarra's claims that a rival club approached Brett Morris despite the winger being contracted to the Dragons for 2015.
The Dragons released a statement earlier this week accusing another club of enticing Morris to break his contract after Fairfax Media revealed the Test flyer had sought a release from the final year of his deal to join twin brother Josh at the Bulldogs next season.
Part of St George Illawarra's statement read that the Dragons: "are aware that another club has offered Brett Morris more money than his contract sum at the Dragons for the 2015 season". The Dragons also said there were "no rules that prevent player managers from talking to other clubs about contracted players".
While rival clubs are allowed to negotiate with Morris for the 2016 season, they are not able to entice him to break his contract a year early.

An NRL spokesman said they had "noted" the Dragons statement. "We are making inquiries with the Dragons to determine whether the matter needs to be taken any further," a NRL spokesman said.

And this is why the Raiders can't have offered Austin anything for the 2015 season. It's against the rules. The Dogs can't have spoken to Morris about 2015, only 2016, likewise with Austin and Canberra. If they have the manager and club can get severely punished. So either it's all BS and just Austin's manager talking out his arse to try get him a better deal (most likely scenario) or people are going to get fined and suspended.

I mean how hard is it to imply to a journalist that Canberra are offering someone a lot of money to join them? Any journo would believe that and spill it out in countless articles.

You live in fairy world if you think managers, players and clubs actually play by the rules!!!!! Their is horse trading going on all the time, if you waited till it was legal "duck season" you would more than likely miss the boat. A lot of it is just a casual feeler to see if a player is interested, but it is happening all the time.

I can see the bulldogs and Dessie sitting down and talking about signing the other Morris twin.
Bulldogs: if we get caught we will get fined for breaking salary cap rules.
Des: we are offering him $500k a season for 3 years and you worry about a $20k fine?

the release will be granted on compassionate grounds. they shared the womb together so they have to share the jumper as well.

lol clubs like dogs have no ethics or moral codes. they get what they want.

My thoughts too, but it's not even about Austin being a dummy spitter, he doesn't seem like that kind of guy.

It's more the point that if you enforce a contract and the person doesn't want to be there, you will never get 100% out of them, even if they don't totally tank the year. It's human nature that you don't tend to thrive in an environment you don't want.

Not if you make it clear they're wanted. Look at Hoffman this season as an example. Publicly said he wanted to move, Broncos said no, had a great season. Milford and Matai are just 2 other lesser examples from this season i can think of too. It happens all the time, real clubs don't just let their stars go unless it's very serious and compassionate grounds, or if they literally have no use for them in the coming season.

He has to wait til he has a coach to ask a release from before he can do anything anyway…!

The club are waiting for the new coach to be appointed,it will be his call on whether Blake gets a release to join team Sticky or not.

Even if he does stay, he probably won't stay beyond 2015 if he has the same kind of roaming role he had this yr. He probably feels entitled to lock down a position, and after the yr he's had you can't blame him.

Agreed, but we badly need him for at least one more year as insurance for Brooks Mosses and Teddy. I would give him a upgraded contract, mainly to keep him happy, even if it is for a year and by 2016 we should be in a better position either to extend his deal or let him walk, dependent on our needs.

Although I know how he must feel, being offered a very good long term deal at the Raiders would be hard to knock back and anything can happen in 12months. So I can see why he wants a release

FWIW, Blake Austin posted this on his Instagram account today.

But who wants to be kept on as "insurance"? Austin's had a good season and played hard in every position but prop, but on paper he doesn't make the starting 17.. Why would he stick around to play NSW cup in between utility appearances in the NRL side?
