Time For Benji Marshall to Retire

Brain farted when he wanted to take a quick tap when there were still players coming back onside and we were down to 12.

That happens nearly every game in the competition!

Do not want sound negative and he is a nice bloke, but he is the most overrated player I have seen in almost 5 decades of watching footy.

He has never been able to lead a team to the semis, never been able to come through in must win games when the main guy.

For those who want him to stay on, here is one simple question: why will Benji in 2020 be any different?

So 2005 grand final was good. I think he played well that year.

2008 World Cup. Watch the game, he played pretty well in that too.

You're not wrong that he's inconsistent and that he can make really bad decisions in important games. But in your almost 50 years of watching rugby league how many tigers premierships have you watched? And how was Benji that season? And how many times have NZ won the world cup? Once. And who won them that game almost single handedly?

I get that Benji is connected to our years of futility, and he deserves to be. But how can you overrate a players who is the main reason we won a premiership and who won the world cup for New Zealand? Those two victories alone are more then most players achieve, and the fact he took major underdogs on his back to do it is proof of his quality.

I agree his form has been bad in prior years, but he's been a different player this year, much more composed and much more effective. Tonight was a bad night, but it doesn't define his career.

Why have him back in 2020? He's better than Reynolds and we don't have anyone else.

@ElleryHanley I got into huge trouble years ago for stating that Marshall is the most overrated player ever to play NRL. I would still keep him over Brooks though.

Agree on the good moments and games.

When I say overrated it is because I mean he gets talked about by the media like Thurston and co. Thurston was a much, much, much better player 90% of the time.

@watersider Personally Marshall was only one cog in the 2005 premiership. Prince, Hodgo, Skando and Galea take equal credit. Scott Prince probably more.

He was better than Brooks. I’m a brooks supporter but he was flat out lost again tonight. No game management and stifled play.

We need a game managing halfback ASAP next year and let Brooks play a Luke Keary style 5/8 role.

I don’t get the no-look passes ...
Who’s he trying to fool ?

Open your eyes benji you tool !

We have no other option that’s better. No cap room thanks to Cleary:

We still have Grub, why not play him

His pass to Marsters was case and point. Holland was standing between them and because he didn't look threw it straight into him.

Absolutely he should retire. Rocks and diamonds gets you nowhere over the course of a season. The last 15 years shows us that much.
His ludicrous penalty early in the second half on the last tackle was the turning point in the game. They were fired up but we defended well that set, then he lies on the player for 5 seconds giving away the most frustrating penalty possible. They scored 2 tries and got all the momentum. Then add on his awful kicks, interception pass poor defence and it's time. The fact he makes Brooks go into his shell only further confirms this.

We need to move on...

I get that, and I know what you mean. But I've also never seen a player as good as Benji either. Honestly, 2005 form was out of this world and while Prince was the organiser and Hodgson played brilliantly out wide and Robbie played well, it was Benji's special play that won us the premiership. He was unstoppable, on another level, and because his highs are so high it really highlights his lows. Benji tries things in games, he makes mistakes, but he's playing the game differently. You'll all miss it when he's gone and the game will be more boring without him. And we make ourselves look stupid and bitter by turning on arguably the best player who'll ever play for the Tigers. I know I sound like a silly fanboy, but as a Balmain fan from '91, Benji is the only player to have done anything really special at this club. It's crazy to blame this season on him, one of lowest paid players, getting on in years, who had no expectation of even being in first grade at the start of the season. find another scapegoat, it shouldn't be benji.

It wasn’t even an intercept ...
It was a gift !
Maguire needs the balls to drop him , if not he’s no better than the other crap coaches we’ve had !

That is the one that lost me on him for good. The final nail in he coffin.

Dogs terrible...us tons of ball....8-0 about to become 12....just need composed set...

And our 34 yo throws a no look pass.

A play that has a 1/5 chance.

Also tell him to announce his retirement, we can’t move forward with him at 6, go out with his mate before embarrassing himself

@hobbo1 Its not the crap coaches its the crap players and crap players are all the club seems to be able to attract. Now if we had no salary cap like one particular club who is full of internationals it would be a different story.

I love that. Can someone go back to 2005 and tell him not to throw the flick pass to Pat Richards!!
