Time For Benji Marshall to Retire

2003 debut
2005 premiership
2006-09 injuries and adjusting to life after Prince, didn't play all that well. Sheens had Morris at halfback, and then asked benji to organise, it never really worked out, but it wasn't all Marshall's fault that he wasn't really able to play his natural game. He adjusted tried his best but it didn't work out.
2010 great year for tigers
2011 another good year
2012 Tigers imploded
2013 Mick Potter happened
2014-17 Benji not here
2018-19 We want to blame these two years on Benji Marshall?

What's happened since 2005 is a huge amount of mismanagement, with boards replacing boards and coaches flying out the window, and prior to his return he was away for about four years. How'd we go then? If the club had money and better management he'd have gone on to win a lot more for us. In what he's done for us irrespective of that, he's brilliant.

Bring back Potter
Bye bye Benchy !

@fair-dinkum
But in those highlight years he had more highlights than anyone has ever had.
Anyone.
Perhaps you’re right though that his legacy is just that.

I don’t get the no-look passes ...
Who’s he trying to fool ?

Open your eyes benji you tool !

That is the one that lost me on him for good. The final nail in he coffin.

Dogs terrible...us tons of ball....8-0 about to become 12....just need composed set...

And our 34 yo throws a no look pass.

A play that has a 1/5 chance.

I love that. Can someone go back to 2005 and tell him not to throw the flick pass to Pat Richards!!

It was the right play then...broken field, 2 on 1. Winger with great hands.

It was not the right play tonight or 1000 other times since 05.

Can we please stop dining out on 2005?

He's done it successfully plenty of times since then too. Here's Wayne Bennett, from Wikipedia:

"Benji equals anybody I've seen in terms of flair, and making something happen. He is a remarkable talent, born out of living on the edge. That's the way he is. He was made to be a footballer."

You want him to stop?

Bennet is saying that to be nice. Ironically, if he had of had Bennet as his coach all his career he would likely have actually cut out half of his dud plays and reached his potential.

Jesus we only got back into it because of him.

And we were only down 18-6 because of him.

Rocks and diamonds, we all know how the song goes by now...

We have no other option that’s better. No cap room thanks to Cleary:

We still have Grub, why not play him

I was with friends of Reynolds at the game tonight. He may be at Newcastle next year. He’s not happy they believe Madge is wrapping him in cotton wool so that he’s not injured again before any move.

My final thoughts on this are:

I rate Benji and it seems a lot of you here don't. That baffles me but it's all interpretation so who knows, we're all just keyboard warriors here.

I just think the level of criticism and the rudeness of it is out of wack. It makes us look like whiny children.

It's a simple rule but we shouldn't say stuff here that we wouldn't actually say in person. I find posts like these embarrass us as fans far more than anything Benji's ever done on the field.

All I will say is if we had a goal kicker, he put us in a position that we probably win the game tonight!

My concern with Benji playing on is he's not going to get any better and I believe that we need a 6 that will play better than what we're getting from him at the moment.

It’s a trick question really. We need a better 6 than an ageing Marshall if we are going to challenge. But Marshall is still a Solid contributor on a small contract when our salary crap has been mis- managed by the snake.

AJ Brunson for 2021 would be ideal.

Agreed, Benji gets one more year until we can start to sort out our cap mess!

The poor thing is the Dogs will sign 4-5 quality first graders next year and have plenty the following year. The Snake locked us into years of mediocrity. I believe Madge is the answer long term and off season releasing players will be key. If we can add a goal kicker, edge forward and a centre we will improve big time. We have areas of weakness teams take advantage of every week.

The dogs were lucky with their cap mess as they had players of value to other clubs, we don't have a Klemmer who is going to free up $800-900k for us. All our big named players are totally unwanted by other teams.

In an ideal situation this would be Benji's final season, we are far from an ideal situation so we need to look at players on low amounts that will provide value when compared to their $. Benji is great value for money, especially when you see what we are paying and often injured and inferior player in Reynolds. If we can get someone to bite on Reynolds, or Packer then that would allows us a little room to improve in a position or 2.

Having sobered up and stopped crying I've come to realise my post may have been irrational. It's not like we're gonna pick up somebody better for the same price as Benji. Maybe Reynolds can stay fit and can push his spot next year. Although that's 1 in a 100 chance of happening.

Are yes Benchy. That whole 10 minutes of that souths game before he got on the field to chase a already lost game. Was it 12-0 or 18-0 after 10mins?

When I say overrated it is because I mean he gets talked about by the media like Thurston and co. Thurston was a much, much, much better player 90% of the time.

I get that, and I know what you mean. But I've also never seen a player as good as Benji either. Honestly, 2005 form was out of this world and while Prince was the organiser and Hodgson played brilliantly out wide and Robbie played well, it was Benji's special play that won us the premiership. He was unstoppable, on another level, and because his highs are so high it really highlights his lows. Benji tries things in games, he makes mistakes, but he's playing the game differently. You'll all miss it when he's gone and the game will be more boring without him. And we make ourselves look stupid and bitter by turning on arguably the best player who'll ever play for the Tigers. I know I sound like a silly fanboy, but as a Balmain fan from '91, Benji is the only player to have done anything really special at this club. It's crazy to blame this season on him, one of lowest paid players, getting on in years, who had no expectation of even being in first grade at the start of the season. find another scapegoat, it shouldn't be benji.

Get over it mate. It's people like you that would have him play until he's in his late 60's and still reminiscing about the good old 05 days. The guy is finished. He's getting worse each year. Appalling game management & leadership on field. But how about that flick pass huh?

Really, the only thing remotely comparatively child like is you carrying on like a child that doesn't want to let go of his favourite toy. It's sickening. Stop it man.

For all your carrying on you haven’t put forward a feasible option. Reynolds who can’t get on the field?

My carrying on lol. I'd rather we go with a rookie and finish last than miss the finals AGAIN with Marshall. Brooks is far better without him. You do realise that everyone outside of our club thinks it's hysterical that he is still in our team right?
