Time For Benji Marshall to Retire

Benji has always been a "rocks or diamonds" player, in his younger days you would get many diamonds as age catches up to him it is nearly all rocks. To me there is no point having him here next year as i can only see rocks on the conveyor belt next year.
Like Robbie he should retire gracefully

THIS
Benji has far more bad plays in him now than previous.
If he plays regularly next year we end up the same as last year and this.

Time to go old man.

Play a young guy there next year. If we don’t have any in the lower grades buy a cheap young guy with Benjis money. I don’t want him in the squad next year.

To be fair, he made up for it with the last try..and possibly looked like the only one that could get us going. The same cannot be said for the other half who is yet to prove to me that he is capable of leading this team. Ever.

Come off it.
Brooks has been spouting all year it's 'his team'.
You can't even blame Farah for not throwing him the ball.
About time the Dally M half back won us a few games - like other teams halfbacks tend to do.

People blaming Marshall ,Brooks ,Momirovski are looking in the wrong direction

Poor coaching and horrible decisions in team selections , injury management and the failure to be able to admit the initial changes weren't working

Some on here thought Sheens was the Fonz .....starting to see what Maguire's problem is ...he can't recognize when he is wrong and needs to change

We were the better tea last night, all that was in it was a silly forced pace from benji to cause an intercept and GK(not momo fault Cleary doesn’t enjoy it

Farah and Mbye getting injured early really hurt us.
Our biggest problem is all the money tied up in guys who are nowhere near first grade.

@watersider Good on you.

But sadly with only a few exceptions this whole forum is an embarrassment particularly after a loss.

problem is if you pick a rookie in the 21 or 19 you have to back him and play him

You have to be able to look at situation from two angles , how do I win this game and how do we NOT lose this game

If Liddle is on the bench we don't lose , every game and every situation is different ....we play Manly next week and if Farah is fit we don't play Liddle

@balmain-boy I think we need him next year and he has been great this year but geez he made some bad bad plays last night. It was also a crunch game.

@cktiger I agree. If we just had quality players taking up those cap dollars we'd be in a much better situation.

Predictable inflammatory thread. Remove history, remove emotion, remove disappointment. Boil it back to its basics.

Is Benji the best five-eighth we have? Yes. Is he the best in the comp? No. Do we have a signing or junior capable of permanently replacing Benji next year? No. Even if Reynolds is 100% fit and our first-choice 5/8th in 2020, you need a player like Benji as backup. We don't have any other player, first-choice or backup, with the skill and experience of Benji.

So you re-sign him. Forget the history or club legend or "professional failure" ideas, boil it back to simple sports business. We don't have enough quality players in his position, we are highly unlikely to sign or promote new ones for 2020, and considering Benji's current price-point, it's a no-brainer that you re-sign him. He's fit, he's first-grade calibre, he's experienced, he's willing to play a backup role if he has to. The minute any of that changes, both parties agree he retires - just like how Farah was managed this year.

Luckily, despite opinions to the contrary, the coach seems to know what he's doing and it appears very likely that Benji will go around again, so the shouting from the hill can calm down.

@jirskyr - you have to sign him up because he is the best cost on the salary cap option we will get. It's a good business decision in the context of managing a professional sports team.

Benji doesn't get dropped by Madge, so he will be in the team every week regardless of form, and if Madge can get over his love of Benji then Benji will finish his career in CC.
There are players out there, Manly got Cust this year and gave him a go, the warriors have Harris Tevita and Keirghan who are going to be in CC next year, both are goal kickers and both would be better than Benji

The coach and his staff were the problem last night ....you back the 100% fit rookie and take the chances of losing the game out of the equation by running with a back up plan if the hooker goes down

If someone with no senior coaching experience could see the problem , Madge should have as well

People need to stop making excuses ...we took dumb risks when dumb risks weren't required

Again I bet that Bellamy , Bennett , Robinson wouldnt' have made those calls

I’m most disappointed in his leadership last night. For someone that talks a lot about being s leader in this group and a senior player, he didn’t show it.

I question our tactics even given that there were injuries to key players. I said to wifey for most of the match “why are we so bunched and running one out?”

Even the commentators mentioned it with 10 minutes to go.

@851 This is what should be happening the recruiters need to get off there back sides and start finding talent , please do not tell me it is not out there of course there is ...other clubs do it ! or is our club just to lazy ! and happy with the status quo .

They are out there alright, and they would jump at a chance to play a starting 6 or 7 spot at the Weststigers rather than backup at their current club for Benji's money or even less, Penrith threw two 19 year old debutants in on Friday night, they held their own.
If Benji was told he was backup and will be playing CC next year, I bet he wouldn't be so keen to hang around, but he knows when they say it, they don't mean it.

that's your opinion then good and I have mine... all good then... I'll judge Brooks once he is left alone to do what he can do without Benji by his side and Liddle providing the service he needs and not being over ruled by the two senior players... I'll wait till then

I was one of Brooks harshest critics, I didn't want him re-signed this year so this is no excuse, but Benji is not helping Brooks one bit, I have stated months ago Benji needed to be dropped to allow Brooks a proper go. We have gone all in on Brooks, lets give it every possible chance to work, and that is in my opinion getting rid of Marshall.
