Predictable inflammatory thread. Remove history, remove emotion, remove disappointment. Boil it back to its basics.
Is Benji the best five-eighth we have? Yes. Is he the best in the comp? No. Do we have a signing or junior capable of permanently replacing Benji next year? No. Even if Reynolds is 100% fit and our first-choice 5/8th in 2020, you need a player like Benji as backup. We don't have any other player, first-choice or backup, with the skill and experience of Benji.
So you re-sign him. Forget the history or club legend or "professional failure" ideas, boil it back to simple sports business. We don't have enough quality players in his position, we are highly unlikely to sign or promote new ones for 2020, and considering Benji's current price-point, it's a no-brainer that you re-sign him. He's fit, he's first-grade calibre, he's experienced, he's willing to play a backup role if he has to. The minute any of that changes, both parties agree he retires - just like how Farah was managed this year.
Luckily, despite opinions to the contrary, the coach seems to know what he's doing and it appears very likely that Benji will go around again, so the shouting from the hill can calm down.
The coach and his staff were the problem last night ....you back the 100% fit rookie and take the chances of losing the game out of the equation by running with a back up plan if the hooker goes down
If someone with no senior coaching experience could see the problem , Madge should have as well
People need to stop making excuses ...we took dumb risks when dumb risks weren't required
Again I bet that Bellamy , Bennett , Robinson wouldnt' have made those calls
