Tino Tavana #305

He was ok tonight. Made number of handling errors, don't actually win any duels in attack but contested enough for us to get a result or two. His defence is average and he struggles immensely in making metres

As a whole our entire backline were terrible with yardage. So many 20-25m sets where the backs combined for 4 hitups for 12m. We simply can't have such a small and slow backline.

But he did well defensively in the air and finished off a decent move. Solid overall. Did he add anything Skelton wouldn't have? I'm not sure. I would definitely have Skelton back next week for someone.

Also interesting that the club has promoted him without any communications yet again.
Have him over Luke L any day.

I dont see much point playing Luke given he's leaving.
His yardage and speed is certainly better than Tito's though. But Tavana has an ability to make something happen.
Did you watch Luke tonight. Massive effort i thought. Watched some video with Luia telling Massa that it's not about the big moments its about doing you job. Tbe big moments will come. Do your job. Luke is doing his job and we will regret the loss

yea i thought he gave it a great crack tonite, took some tough hit ups and didnt shirk any responsibility and held his head high against experienced opposite wingers

Is Tavana off contract at the end of this year ?

Hope he gets a quick extension then …

Geez.. so many other outside backs we have had go through this joint over the past 15 years would have dropped that high pass from AD

I have only watched the highlights of games but I think the worst thing he got that interception early on because when the ball comes his way he is 1-2meters in front of his centre in no man’s land with an intercept the only thing that will save him. His opposite is outside him if they get the ball to him.
This is only a snapshot view as I haven’t seen whole games but a trend i noticed in the highlights

This is Tino Tavana’s thread and his effort and ability particularly in the air is great to see and a big part of why we beat the Warriors last night.
But just quickly on Luke Laulilli, yes he still needs to improve some things in defence, but his ball carries have been outstanding, as strong as any outside back in the NRL so far this season.

It wasn't the only horrible pass by Doueihi, good running game, passing game not so much.

Didn't want to be critical of Doueihi but since you mentioned the pass. 🤣
Surely the pass was a little high at worst, timed and positioned perfectly. Wasn't like it was behind him or at his feet.

Tino's assets are his brilliant leap, anticipation & skills with his hands & feet.

He is not lightning quick, not overly tall or muscular & hasn't been that strong in contact through the grades.

But he is definitely thicker in size than last season and stronger in contact so kudos to him for working on these deficiencies. Hopefully continues to work on putting on some size & on his strength as he gets more full pre-seasons.

Leap - could be on par or better than Bula with his springy legs & coupled with his hands makes him a significant aerial threat.

Anticipation - so many times is in the right place at the right time, would be one of the best in our club at taking intercepts or knocking down the final pass defusing a try assist and can time his jam-in very well in defence.

Hands & feet - hands are great at catching both 2 & 1-handed, has a deft pass on him which he doesn't get to show much on the wing & has very quick feet at the line which enables him to often beat the 1st man.

Whilst a quiet unassuming kid, he is very determined. Struggled in November in the 1st month of pre-season due to the high fitness demands (albeit it was his 1st full pre-season) and Benji put it on him & a few others to shape up. He did & I think his character really shone to Benji (no throwing toys out of the cot, just head down work hard).

He's still on a T&T as per Benji's presser last night and I would say will drop back to Cup with To'a returning but he is a kid we need to lock in for the future.

I have no doubt he could be a very good fullback if required and whilst I've never seen him play there I think he could be a decent centre too with his skillset.

Perfectly described BWG.
Kudos to you and a few other regular forum contributors who have been singing Tino’s praises for a couple of years now.
I agreed he had x-factor that you cannot coach and looked a very progressive player, but I must admit I was surprised when I first heard he was starting for us last night.
From a tactical point of view aerial contests are always very important, but when playing in wet or slippery conditions it becomes even more important, so it’s a big pat on the back for Benji making such a big decision which paid off.
Moving forward this could be the making of a young emerging player such as Tino, it will do wonders for his confidence and who knows how much improvement he might take away from it.

My thoughts are that he competed so much better than Toa typically does, and I would continue to pick him above Toa, If he drops back to ressies it’s about his own development being so young.
