Titans broke and dont have a salary cap!!!

THE Gold Coast Titans' crippled financial state descended further into the abyss yesterday after a team of NRL accountants unearthed millions of dollars of hidden debt in the embattled football club.

While Titans boss Michael Searle has long been adamant the club's difficulties are confined to the its property arm and its Centre of Excellence, NRL chief executive David Gallop told The Daily Telegraph an audit this week had shown all aspects of the business were under "considerable financial stress" with the total debt estimated at $35 million.

It comes amid an increasing belief that Storm halfback Cooper Cronk has already signed a three-year deal with the Titans, despite deep concerns about the club's future.

While Gallop couldn't guarantee the Titans' current playing roster would all be paid, he said he was confident contract payments would be met.

"We have received reports from our external accountants today that confirm the whole structure at the Titans is under considerable financial stress," Gallop said. "We are working through the options around that but there needs to be an acceptance that the various arms of the group's business are intertwined in terms of the level of debt and that will have ramifications as future options are explored."

It is understood the external accountants discovered the football club was in millions of dollars of debt to suppliers, including those that provide merchandise, catering and ground hiring.

The Titans will return to the courtroom today after Reed Constructions, which finished the NRL club's controversial Centre of Excellence project, filed two affidavits in the Federal Court this week.

The NRL cannot allow the club to fold because it needs them to satisfy their TV agreement of eight matches a week.

"The game's clear goal is to maintain a viable football club at the Titans," Gallop said. "The issues around the building are creating an alarming diversion from what would otherwise be a successful expansion of our game into an important area."

Yet the Titans continue to plough ahead.

Following the shock signing of Souths big man Dave Taylor on Sunday, it is believed the Titans are in the box seat to secure Cronk on a three-year deal worth about $800,000 per season despite their financial turmoil.

The Storm had feared that South Sydney would snatch Cronk from under their noses because of the influence of Craig Bellamy's former understudy Michael Maguire.

But that has changed, so much so that there was a strong belief out of the Storm yesterday that the Titans had become "frontrunners" to sign their halfback, who has been in white-hot form.

Searle - who did not return calls last night - has a close relationship with Cronk's manager Chris Orr, based on the Gold Coast.

Working in the Titans' favour is Orr has the ability to secure numerous lucrative third-party agreements.

Why do they _insist_ on having a team based on the gold coast? How many times does it have to fail before they realise there's just no fanbase there, and how many NRL players even come from there?

Give a team to PNG. 6 million die-hard fans, a hundred-thousand odd players who'll work for a meat pie at full time, who even cares if they suck, seems more viable than wasting another 30 mill on the GC.

One of Searlie's investors folded this week with the Commonwealth Bank taking possession of his 3 Pubs…

It all went pear-shaped with over investing in external projects to create this 'Metropolis'. Once you take out the Stadium Rent (which is an issue for the soccer club also), apparently the Football Operations would be trading solvently?!

If the banks move in and choose to split up the sale of assets, there would be plenty of investors to buy the Football Operation!!!

Let's hope the NRL does not stop on the Gold Coast.

The NRL should be sending auditors to ALL clubs. They are in the process of negotiating a massive TV deal with a large proportion of these funds being directed to the clubs. It would be prudent to ensure those receiving the funds have sufficient governance and a sound financial footing. No point throwing money at clubs that are unable to manage it properly.

The Centre of Excellence will sell up for next to nothing. IIRC I read that the Robina council will not allow anyone to use it for anything else.

For an accountant, it appears poor ol' Searle isn't very good with numbers. If they do fold the Titans, the license must go to Ipswich/Western Brisbane.

Give it to the Central Coast. They are ready to go and it will be a great story for the game.

When you are so keen to have a franchise on the Gold Coast that you let someone of the repute of Michael Searle be 80% stake holder answerable to virtually nobody you are asking for trouble

agreed by 500%… I reckon they will get a bigger shock when they open up Parramatta's books!

Oh and the Commission should buy the "Centre of Excellence". Remove the Titans admin and set up a academy system in SE Queensland. Have a facility for the growth and progress of the game.

Not at the price they apear to want for it though

this is a joke our club has had to let players go scrimp and save and yet what the titans has done is no different to melbourne and the nrl is helping givening them money !!!! this is a failed licence seagulls giants chargers titans none have worked central coast and reds should be put in straight away. caost hve been cooking there book for ages theve even offered cronk 2.6 million what the hell. builders are still owed money. no one helped the magpies or balmain or the sharks in the 80s when they nearly went under.although the sharks are another club that seem to buy buy buy and havent got a zac. also d taylor dont spend youre money yet.

The Sharks were provided loans by the NSWRL in the 1980's. Wests and Newtown were not given any assistance during that same period.

Your point is valid nonetheless.

I don't understand the fascination with the gold coast, and "rugby league needing the gold coast." I've recently moved to the area and it seems no one gives a rats arse about the Titans. They've got an unbelievable stadium, easy access with a train that runs directly to it, an attractive and marketable area but all that means jack if they can't get people through the turnstiles. I don't understand why they got the nod over the central coast. I think they or W.A have to be the next team to gain entrance. If there is to be a team on the Central Coast though i'd like to see them enter as a fresh identity and not the bears. Give the people a team they want, not just a regurgitated version of North Sydney.
The Sea Gulls didnt work, The Crushers Didnt Work, The Chargers Didnt Work, The Titans Didnt work. Its time to pull up stumps on Rugby League on the Gold Coast.

Didn't the property arm of the business build a number of houses for some of the players for free? I'd definitely heard that was the case for Greg Bird.

it is a total disgrace , and the people who run the nrl should be kicked real hard , when you here this stuff you look back to the balmain and western sububs supporter who watch their teams disapear , they should have been given a hand , i would have both those teamsback before i would help the goldcoast , or any other new team

They should just go, fold over. Bring in Ipswich (Sorry I can't stand the name 'Brisbane Bombers'), and that then opens the door to bring in WA and the Central Coast.

I only have two problems with that though:
1\. The AFL will have a full market share with the Suns and
2\. There will be a new stadium up there that has no use, no Titans and no Gold Coast United in the A-League.
