Todd Payten pleads guilty to urinating on Hyde Park memorial

I would imagine that a vast majority of Australians understand the importance of these shrines and abhor anyone desecrating them. Todd gets that and I applaud his contrition on the matter.

dankill, think of the memorial in the same terms as a cemetery. If someone walked by and relieved themselves on your relatives headstone, you would be pretty angry.

I am willing to accept Todd didn't know exactly where he was, it was a bad mistake on his part. He has apologised though and is making amends.

Dankill… I think you will find everyone has different feelings in relation to death and shrines/memorials etc.

I can see the simplicity of this incident, yet also dissapointed it has happened. But at the end of the day, many people care!

Yes they have seen there mates dying and died or mistreated badly in Singapore and Malaya by the Japanese
That is the exact reason they would be pissed off Your desecrating the memories of their good mates who died fighting for people like Todd Payten Todd's apologized and done the right thing to a degree

The real right thing would of been to come out the week it happened and told everyone what he did ,apologized to the Diggers and their families, the fans and the public and told us he was pleading guilty

In my eyes that what a real man who has made a mistake and wants to be leader of other young men does

Dankill, ask the RSL how seriously they view urinating on a war memorial. You will then realise how out of touch your views are.

You really should learn what War Memorials are meant to represent before commenting. It must be embarassing for you to read Todd's statement of contrition. He gets the seriousness of what he did, why can't you??

What if the person (not Todd) did this was from a nationality that your grandfather fought against would you feel differently about this ?

What Todd did was wrong - simple as that. As others have said plenty of tress around or kneel and pee in the grass not on the Memorial.

or kneel and pee in the grass not on the Memorial.

Ive never seen a bloke do this.

Dont you people get it, he didnt realise it was a war memorial, it was just a wall… in that state at that hour your only focus is to ''go''....no one thinks clearly, you make bad calls...its not the end of the world

No worries i wonder how many times ppl have thought or cared about this war memorial b4 this came out in the news. I apolagise for thinking that with all the problems going on in the world that a man peeing on somthing is not such a big deal. All respect to our diggers . And hopfully TP learnt his lesson

By no means lessening this or excusing this, but the shape of the building really does attract this sorta behavior….shaped very angular there a lots of sort of private concave corners right around it the entire monument
This happens every weekend....witnessed it first hand working shift work at Museum station years ago

'Your worship, my client, finding himself amongst unfamiliar surroundings and in a heightened state of renal discomfort, came upon what he thought was a purpose built alien relief station. Mr Payten, having consumed a large number of legal, yet hallucinatory liquids, clearly did not believe the structure to be of any cultural significance and assumed, given it's inviting, angular and darkened private curves, it was a designated place to deposit the contents of his bladder. The fact that my client remembers any of this your worship, defies science itself'.

As they say, one of your best ink…lol

Seems the RSL view this type of incident seriously. Anyway I'm moving on now. Todd to his credit understood the seriousness and has acted accordingly. Well done to him.

Strange isnt it how these stories get all the attention and nearly 100 posts, yet good work by players for charities get no comments, and hardly even warrant a look.

I agree, maybe this thread has had its time and could possibly be locked.
