Traits of winning teams

Interested to know what others think are the traits of winning football teams and where WT rank coming into the new season, this is how I would score WT based on the 5 traits I think a successful team needs the most. Storm (2020) would score a 4 or 5 in each category in my opinion.

1. Dominant (aggressive) pack - 2/5
2. Game management (player leaders)- 2/5
3. Game planning (coaching)- 4/5
4. Strike power (x-factor) - 3/5
5. Goal kicker - 2/5

I have scored us low mainly due to having such a young, inexperienced squad with a lot of new faces and question marks, my hope is that we have a lot more upside than many of our opponents.

Great post. I think these are all crucial. I’d put our goal kicking at 1/5. Another i would add to the list is defensive resilience (eg able to defend repeat sets on your line, overcome setbacks etc). We’ve traditionally struggled with this whereas the Roosters/Storm have always been able to defend errors. I’d have us at a 1/5 for defensive resilience.

Early days, but i think we could have a very aggressive pack. The side is big, mobile with experience ,youth, and added toughness ,with JO and Tamou to rub off on the players.

Agree. I think this is inter-related with both game management and having a strong pack, lacking in these areas leads to errors and an inability to defend these.

Think one big word got left out off the list

Coach

Yeah, but not just Coach, but completely upgraded all training and coacing staff. We were stale and behind the times previously,i expect a lot of improvement.

I think Musgrove needs to have a massive (like pushing for a rep jersey) year if we are to match the best packs in the Comp.

I believe Musgrove and Twal were both carrying injuries last year, and Bore was just back from injury and out of fitness.

Mikaele was injured too. Had a very quiet year

Our pack is unproven. A score of 2 is for potential.
We don’t have player leaders except for Tamou.
Game planning? No idea.
The only x-factor player we have is JTJ.
We don’t have a goal kicker.

They say a team builds from the front office. We know the merger had its problems and that bias and control issues caused friction. These issues have been rectified, and the results are showing.Recruitment, training, coaching is now more professional and in line with the top clubs. We are on the way up.MAYBE CLUB MANAGEMENT SHOULD BE ON THE LIST?

I'd say you're pretty bang on OP.

In terms of our forward pack though, yes largely inexperienced, but man if the young ones hit the ground running we will have a forward pack to fear.

Simpkins, Blore, Musgrove all powerhouses. Even Packer if he ups his game. Then we have Uto, Leilua, Mikaele, Twal who all (other than Uto who is an unknown) can be really good on their day.

Bunch of youngsters in and around the top 30 too.

It's exciting.

I personally think individual skill and being able to read the game is a major trait of all the good teams and is overlooked.

There's no point having an aggressive pack, the best coach or good game managers if the rest are dropping the ball, can't pass properly, get out of position or see an overlap.

Sounds obvious, but last year we had a few blokes who couldn't even carry the ball properly or stay in position on the wing.

Halfbacks that control a game off their kicks and have high execution.

Fullbacks that are a threat to the defensive line.

Forward pack that doesn't get rolled through the ruck.

Instinctive players, not just droids that just go through the motions

Very solid defense, smart attack, great gameplans and an abundance of GREAT players is my opinion, but thats just me.....

on a side note...AD and Mbye both had injuries last year and still played, maybe the lack of speed from AD and a reluctance to get involved by M.Mbye was why they both seemed hesitant at times...Im giving them both chances to step up a level this year, not here to belittle any players but Mbye is bagged a lot without people knowing the full story on players..

Defence around the ruck is top of the list imo.
It reduces the chances of creating an overlap out wider

Our forward pack was terrible last year, hopefully changes helps. Our x-factor hasn't really changed I think, was hoping to get JAC or someone like that. 2021 is a work in progress, I would hope in 2022 we have a star player or two.
