LIVE GAME Trial 1 vs. Warriors

This was a trial game where Benji gave the kids a really good feel of what NRL is about...I feel a whole lot better coming into season 24 than last year,especially after seeing what a good spine looks like...Api Sezar,Sullivan and Bula will be a very strong spine this year,once they gel and play more they could be just what has been needed for quite awhile..Throw in Bateman,Olam and we will win more than we lose hopefully...
I was also impressed by the defense,goaline D will get better,it was even better than last year and it was a trial .....

That's probably what you'd hope for as a target style of player. I don't think he'd be a great gainer of ground, but as a dummy half dash type & tackling machine..

I saw a lot in young Nav Willet today very raw elite talent.

Apparently he knocked back a deal with the Sydney Swans to sign with us - I can’t help but see similarities to Bula’s game if I’m being honest he’ll be one to keep an eye on next to Lobb.

Luke Lualili is another coming through the ranks who boosts our wing depth.

Tupou leaving does sting, however we got some options moving forward due to the power of our strong junior system.

Tupou may well turn out to be a half decent footballer, but his hands are an issue. I am not that fussed on him going to be honest, I think we should prioritize someone else if they are close enough to his level.

Our kicks inside 20 produced repeat sets and were threatening.

We have more direct style. Last year Klemmer passed as many times as he ran, this year nothing but hitups.

API has more players around him when he runs. This is very good.

Seizer looked good. Only trial though.

Only concerns:

The eternal soft defense up the middle. Wasn't disastrous today but I'd love to see us have more control of ruck speed.

Our backs seem overmatched physically. The game has progressed to where wingers are vital in gaining metres. Our backs just aren't very good at it.

Stefano hit up strong but I think his lack of movement in the warriors first try contributed to it, and he just has that stuff in his game. Klemmer is our best prop by a bit of distance IMO.

Finally,

Everyone getting frantic about not dominating against 12 or our lack of precision in the second half should remember it's a trial and that in last year's trial we got flogged.

There was mostly encouraging signs from this match. Congratulations to the team on a strong performance.

He was also being called back a heap by the ref to the point he stepped back letting the warriors make a half break, 2 tackles later they scored.

We need to be fair. TDS was 3rd of the hookers today. Api owned the start. Jake was ok also with some darts, defended well & made most tackles on the park then was TDS.

What game were you watching? TDS was like a tornado out there,,not only making his own tackles but pushing up and cleaning up all the holes that lazy players around him left.. he owns the result, has a teriffic passing game and loves the club.. He is a gun and the future of the club..he leads his mates by example and he will be a rep player by 26

Samuela has done some things on the field that to me displayed an aggression that needs to be controlled and channeled better but Latu has done nothing but impress me every single time I have witnessed him..

gutsy win. 60 mins with an extra player and still make the opposition look good takes some effort

The majority of that game , was played with basically flegg kids against a splattering of nrl players and back end squad members .
When we had our top halves on the field with our actual nrl forwards , we were controlling that game . If anything the send off diminishes how in control we were prior to it.
In fact i wouldn’t have even been surprised if Benji told them to stick to the game plan , as exploiting numbers , and stripping the edges would have not given him the answers to the questions he may have been asking .
Also RTS saved 3-4 tries today . When he was on the field with the rest of the back end squad players and flegg players , it was clear he was a level above . Prior to this , I barely noticed he was on the field when the squads both resembled something closer to first grade .

The kid should be Api’s long term replacement I didn’t mention anything about him or anyone else for next game let alone their career.

Plenty of positives and that’s all that really matters at this stage.
Any negatives are good learning for Benji and the coaching staff.
Next week should feature a few more of who will be our regular NRL squad and we will be up against a Dragons side who are big across the park and play a very physical style under Shane Flanagan, so it will really test our strength and resilience.

It was 12-6 prior to the send off , and we were firmly in control . We didn’t play a single forward start outside seyfarth for the last 8 mins I. That second half. .
From about the 35th minute we had Sullivan and Mason in the halves , then the second half it was Simpkin and Matai . I mean seriously … how you can judge anything on that game is hilarious .
Like I said in another post , I would say that Benji didn’t want to see out and our attack, otherwise he would have brought the starting halves back on . He wanted to see plays , getting to certain spots , ruck control , as well as effort plays and scrambling defence .
He gets nothing as a coach from watching us torch a NSW cup team that last 30 mins . It’s a trial game ! Players played out of position , were put under loads and stress , and now he has. Better gauge on ehat the squad is .

Did people actually watch ? We ended the first half with a halves pairing of Mason and Sullivan , then ended the game with Matai and Simpkin … if you are kicking rocks over this result you’re hilarious !
Of that second half team , only the Fainu brothers , Lobb , TDS, maybe Simpkin , and seyfarth will play nrl .

Agree. Focus wasn’t attack it was direct do the simple things well constant up the middle running plan. Even the wingers were centering the ball more rather than go more to the backrow/edge side.

We didn’t really see a backline move all game outside of the last tackle attack in the 1st half which to me says we played an intentional style today.
