Just can't defend the edges

Our edge defence starts in the middle; we're not holding the middle which then drags players in to cover leaving overlaps wide.

If you analysed every (wide) try tonight I'll guarantee there was an overlap. We're also very susceptible to an offload - we don't lock up the ball well enough..

We're regularly short on both edges so either the defensive structure is wrong or we're simply not able to implement it.

There is no doubt that you are right and the same problem has existed for a number of years

his defence is back in 2014, teams dont defend like that anymore, youve got to move up quick, not back off and let them run and pass the ball, line defence is terrible, move out quickly, arrow head, if they pass, move up and hit him, put pressure on them, i agree with your text

I posted here at the end of last season that the defensive structures don't work. A 100 year worst run of 26 plus a game...only broken this season by a poor Knights team scoring 22.

Almost 40 today against half a QLD cup team. You can't let a few late tries hide reality. The D line folded, yet again.

I have supported Madge, but you just can't argue with stats. **This is an historically bad defensive side**, and ultimately it is on him. He has not addressed glaring issues and the yelling and kicking chairs just does not work anymore. We fold on our line, we have a winger who can't read the numbers and refuses to jump, we have bigs who leave gaps, we have bigs out on their feet after 1-2 sets of D...holes appear as soon as they are on the back foot..**.**none of this has been addressed...****

**It is his team and his system**. Ultimately, Madge has to be accountable. Today is rock bottom. We were never this bad even under really poor previous coaches. I am genuinely surprised we have sunk this low. We are now 3 wins from our last 15 games or so and have conceded 26 plus in almost all of them. If this was a rookie coach, he would be gone. I wanted Madge, was happy with his extension...but you can't argue with stats. The defense is historically bad.

I agree with most of this post but we have DEFINITELY been worse than we were today. How many times did we concede 60 to Canberra under previous coaches?

Defence is easily our number one issue and the coaching staff and players are all responsible. They are struggling to fix it and it's been this way for a long long time under many many coach's

I know what you mean...but those bad showings in Canberra were isolated things.

This has been month after month for an historically long time. And there has never been a bounce back. Even when we lost to Canberra, we'd string some D together for a few games after it.

These are the same flaws...exact same...week after week after week.

Cmon, we've had some bad seasons. We've come awfully close to the spoon not that long ago.

I suspect it was the liberal swearing in a couple of posts which would have been removed.

Mate disagree . Our middles were lying all over them today , and we just rolled along all day long .
The moment it went to an edge , we just missed 1 on 1 defence assignments , and they were away .
Also there’s a real lack of hunger to dive on the ball , or jump for the ball , or just compete from the backs ,.
To me Jimmy is not a centre , he needs to push out to the wing . That jump from Nofa , or lack there of , if that’s not complacency well then I don’t know what it .

Of the backs in reserve grade , is there any standing out who could push forward ?

I feel for Madge somewhat , he shows so much faith in these players and they just don’t aim up on game day and yet when he does make changes the players sulk , i think it’s time to show some faith and blood some younger guys who want to be there

All good, we don't have to agree. It was noticeable that even Joey said our problems started inside with AD rushing in defence whilst JTJ is passive and hangs back. Of course that's only the right, we have been equally poor on the left recently.

With regards JTJ, I'm not sure his head is in the game - he seems disinterested and not willing to put his body on the line. Nofo not jumping was shocking but he was watching the ball so I'd say he had no idea someone was coming.

As for the reserve grade team, I'll be surprised if there's not changes but no idea who. Personally I'd drop JTJ and have BJ and MBye in the centres and promote Simpkin to the bench as 14.

We have zero line speed in defence. As a group they take one or two steps forward and then wait for the attack to reach them. Just a terrible defensive attitude.

Sorry i didn’t watch the 9 telecast . What did Joey say ? Yea Liddle was beyond poor today . It’s really disappointing, I had great hopes for him this year . He looks like he doesn’t trust himself anymore . When he scoots out he goes half hearted .
When I say the middle I mean the middle 4 .if you mean the edge back rower out to the wing , and whoever is at edge backrower is a huge culprit . Then yea I think you’re right .

How’s Hoffman going at centre . ?

Basically said that AD rushes in defence whilst JTJ is passive and that leaves a big gap to exploit. THis is where the space is made and Nofo gets isolated. When JTJ does rush he often takes no-one; like the try they scored close to the line where he barely touched him.

Simpkin on the bench is not for Liddle - I didn't think he was terrible today but certainly didn't get a lot of opportunities. His defence in the middle is pretty decent but I was disappointed with Joffa. Our go forward wasn't bad, we just leave too many gaps.

he's failed to get the players to buy in and they look like a team who are disinterested. Getting booed off the field at half-time obviously gave them some motivation but that should come from the coach. They look like they do not want to play for him. He's not a people person. His way will not work in this day and age and it is showing.

communication among our mob is one of our biggest problems. They're all doing something different and that's a serious problem.

Bottom line, you play for Wests Tigers when you have limited other options. You come here knowing and/or thinking you’re inferior. And you usually are. It all rests with the people who can’t change that.

Yes it's hard to ague that - they look like they have no plan at all.

I'm very much liking Laurie at the back but I wonder how experienced he is at setting a defensive line. In all seriousness, he shouldn't really need to in first grade but I do wonder...

Ciraldo is the defence coach at Penrith. They have 16 points against in 4 rounds. Sounds alright to me.
