Ultimately it is the D...and it is on Madge...

Madge says all the right things. Reality is he can't make it happen.

That first half made it pretty obvious the boys aren't playing for him. A full house at Leichhardt, the emotion surrounding Tommy and playing a Cowboys side that has had a tonne of last minute changes and he can't get them up for it.

Defense is poor, attack is worse. I'm failing to see any evidence of quality coaching at all. This team has gotten worse under Maguire's guidance.

How do they perform like that In the second half if they don’t want to play for the coach?
-look something’s definitely up! I just hope the club finds a way to deal with this ASAP!

Since we can’t defend, maybe the plan should be out score Souths next week, hopefully the boys aim up in defence if we have a lead.

Just can't defend the edges

Our edge defence starts in the middle; we're not holding the middle which then drags players in to cover leaving overlaps wide.

If you analysed every (wide) try tonight I'll guarantee there was an overlap. We're also very susceptible to an offload - we don't lock up the ball well enough..

We're regularly short on both edges so either the defensive structure is wrong or we're simply not able to implement it.

Excellent analysis mate.

Twal came in several times today last man and went low when the ball was in a carrying arm...he had a clear shot at the ball, but left it. One led straight to a try. Same last week.

Either he (and most of them) don't understand how to play D (hard to believe) or they are coached not to wrap up the ball.

I couldnt be bothered reading through all the expert analisis of todays loss....all of a sudden its sack Madge, the D is disgraceful,no middle go forward etc etc etc ...
Why hasnt anyone bagged Hartigan, he is the recruitment guru,Pascoe he is ceo and I thought all made desicions to benefit the club...
Lets blame the coach for players that havent got the intestinal fortitude or brains to play NRL,but just be show ponies because they have a contract with an NRL club..
Sign a contract and get paid every week win ,lose ,or draw...as long as I get paid...

should go back to the old traditional days of real RUGBY LEAGUE ,,,win you get paid loss or draw you get nothing....watch their attitude change real quick...

REAL RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYERS LIKE T.RAUDONIKAS ARE HEROS,,,NRL players are show ponies in a stage show, turn up each week, poor or good performance and get paid....JOKE....

"All of a sudden"......you lost me there mate. It has been 18 games straight.

Defend the coach if you want, but ultimately it is his job to coach them / teach them. I am probably as old as you sound, so I appreciate the old style motivation stuff you suggest...

But it is 2021. It does not work.

Yes your right ,but how many players have we turned over to get the ones we need...everbody said at the preseason how well the club has done cleaning out the cupboard and recruiting well.....it doesnt show on the scoreboard mate, and I have been around for a while and played the game...blame the coach all you like.if the cattle arent good enough they will show the coach up...who would want to be an NRL coach these days with the pussie blokes they have to coach...

I agree some are soft, but I also that many look clueless. Like they clearly don't know where to stand or what to do.

Classic case is Nofa...he was grounded on kicks last week. He did not leave the ground.

A good coach would have had a word and made sure he fixed that this week.

But, no, he stood with both feet planted and was out jumped. He was targeted all first half by glaring flaws that Toddy had seen / Madge has never addressed. Ultimately, that stuff is actually what a coach is paid to do.

Wrong mate...Noffa is an NRL winger that has been in the system for many years...he has to know his job by now...its like a mechanic not knowing where the starter motor is.....dont keep blaming Madge for the players deficiencies ...watch the Rorters or Storm, each player knows there job...
You and others dislike for Madge is glaringly open for all to see ...search the real reason our team is they way it is and compare our players to the top 4 teams...then you may wake up mate...

Your logic is flawed on just about every level. Nofa failed to jump last few weeks on kicks, but as he has been around for a while and 'should' know what do...it is not Madge's fault. So, why even have a coach?

And I don't 'dislike' Madge...why would I? He comes across as a genuine bloke. But pointing out his record 'is' justified. Just as I would praise him if we had a historically good defense. You can't use the "well we don't have top 4 system" also...even the very bottom teams historically have not had this long a run of points against.

There is no dislike, but it needs to be discussed.

We are 3 and 15 since mid last season...and conceded a 100 year worst level of scores...

Yet, we should not question the coach?

What if the players all held hands and moved up together as one ?
Would that work ?
Might find it hard to slide if one falls over !

These blokes would think it was a Tinder date

Mate disagree . Our middles were lying all over them today , and we just rolled along all day long .
The moment it went to an edge , we just missed 1 on 1 defence assignments , and they were away .
Also there’s a real lack of hunger to dive on the ball , or jump for the ball , or just compete from the backs ,.
To me Jimmy is not a centre , he needs to push out to the wing . That jump from Nofa , or lack there of , if that’s not complacency well then I don’t know what it .

Of the backs in reserve grade , is there any standing out who could push forward ?

We have zero line speed in defence. As a group they take one or two steps forward and then wait for the attack to reach them. Just a terrible defensive attitude.

Yep I agree with that . Which is funny , because they weren’t making any metres even with the passive line speed we need intent . And there just isn’t any .

All good, we don't have to agree. It was noticeable that even Joey said our problems started inside with AD rushing in defence whilst JTJ is passive and hangs back. Of course that's only the right, we have been equally poor on the left recently.

With regards JTJ, I'm not sure his head is in the game - he seems disinterested and not willing to put his body on the line. Nofo not jumping was shocking but he was watching the ball so I'd say he had no idea someone was coming.

As for the reserve grade team, I'll be surprised if there's not changes but no idea who. Personally I'd drop JTJ and have BJ and MBye in the centres and promote Simpkin to the bench as 14.

I think jimmy is frustrated because he isnt getting any ball! He lightning fast and we can’t push out to either centre/wings.

Jimmy the Jet looked more like Jimmy the Cessna when he went after the Hammer.

Would love to see Jimmy beak through a couple of tackles and come out the other side and sprint away, but sadly, I just don't think he has it in him any more.

Cessna is generous - trike for mine. May not be entirely his fault but has done nothing in 5 games for mine. He can take Nofo with him.

no one can argue with me on this.

Well I can't see a valid counter argument. The best I have is that some of those misses were just on the player but it's something that should be practiced at training and they have to get it right.

It is a 100 year record in footy...no team has ever conceded 20-40 every week for this long.

It is the system, not just individuals.

Although I take your point, I don't think football results from 1921 (or even 1981) is relevant to this conversation.

he's failed to get the players to buy in and they look like a team who are disinterested. Getting booed off the field at half-time obviously gave them some motivation but that should come from the coach. They look like they do not want to play for him. He's not a people person. His way will not work in this day and age and it is showing.

Main responsibility goes to the players please do not give them an out, just no enthusiasm in the first 20 when that should be the time they are all over the cows in defence

I agree. Cowboys have been awful all year but they showed more enthusiasm over the 80 mins, even though they let Tigers charge back into the contest, and on any other day their coach would have been furious, except he was just relieved to get his first W.

Now you could well argue that Cowboys have been as bad Rounds 1-4 as Tigers have, and they are still behind us on the ladder. Todd Payten got some good results out of Warriors last year, in difficult and prime "man-management" situations. Payten doesn't suddenly go from being an OK coach to a bad coach, yet his Cowboys team is performing poorly overall, and injuries aren't an excuse, for them, as a replacement for effort.

Scored 30 points and lost..defence you say..

Goal kicking cost us today ?
Why isn’t fallout boy kicking ?

Both teams scored 6 trys, the only reason we didn't win that game was that we only kicked 3 goals from 6 attempts.
But that's no excuse for the first half disgraceful effort - yes our defence is awful and has been for years, why hasn't someone (the coaches) fixed this up, are they all wearing blinkers ?????

It’s probably already been suggested but how about , booing before the kick off?

Plenty do when the team list comes out on Tuesday afternoon well before kick off.

Just saw Madge interviewed and he said "it is a quick fix"...

Which suggests he feels it is simply attitude.

16 straight poor D performances IMO is not a "quick fix"...

He seems to think it is more about attitude and effort, rather than poor structures.

Souths will be the ultimate test, so I hope he can indeed fix things quickly...

Two really poor defensive teams...manly and broncos...have adjusted and lifted this week. Both changed things up and have responded.

We have not done this for 17 straight games...

Let's see...Souths the ultimate test.

Much better effort.

Let's hope that type of loss does not wipe us out and we can back up.

Much, much improved.

We had to defend with 12 men on the field and went into golden point, against the premiership favourites.
Hope the boys take some huge confidence and self belief from that.

Last year we played like this against Penrith and only just lost. After that our season fell apart. Hopefully not the same again this time.

Much better effort so far.

Edges still look like they will crack at any moment, but the middle looks a lot better.

It’s ironic that we have evolved from a forward pack full of second rowers under Sheens to having a pack full of props under Madge.
