Kevin Humphreys … Died in Sydney. Source: The Daily Telegraph

Former Tigers great and league administrator Kevin Humphreys has passed away in Sydney’s inner west this morning.
Humphreys had been battling diabetes for several years and recently lost both legs as a result of the illness.

The former NSWRL chairman spent the last months of his life at a nursing home in Gladesville, where he passed away yesterday.

His son, Stephen Humphreys, is now CEO of the Wests Tigers.

Terrible news. I'm sure all Tigers supporters extend their best wishes to the Humphreys family during this difficult time.

TIGERS FAMILY MOURNING PASSING OF KEVIN HUMPHREYS
29/04/2010 2:18:34 PM
The Tigers family is in mourning following the passing of Kevin Humphreys after a long illness. He was 80 years of age.
>
Kevin was a prop-forward who played 38 games for the Balmain Tigers during the 1953-1956 seasons. More importantly, he was a highly regarded and successful administrator who was the architect of many of the commercial successes which Rugby League is now the beneficiary of.
>
Kevin was the Secretary of the Balmain Tigers from 1965 and was its first full time employee. He was in charge of the Tigers when they won their famous 1969 premiership victory against South Sydney. He went on to become President of the New South Wales Rugby League and Chairman of the Australian Rugby League.
>
In 1976, he became the first full time Executive Director of the New South Wales Rugby League and he oversaw many of the changes which the code experienced in the 1970s and the 1980s including the introduction of sponsorships, which are now so critical to the commercial strength of the game, the introduction of the midweek Amco Cup knockout competition and various rule changes including increasing the value of a try from three points to four points. Perhaps his greatest legacy was the introduction of State of Origin football which celebrates its thirtieth season this year and which has become perhaps the pinnacle of the game in terms of commercial strength and player aspiration.
>
Tigers Chairman David Trodden said Kevin Humphreys was an absolute administrative giant of the game.
>
“He was a great leader, both of our club and also of the game as a whole,’’ Mr Trodden said.
>
“Kevin was a visionary who, as an administrator, was well ahead of his time. He had the strength of character to make his visions a reality and the game that we have today has a huge debt to the considerable skill, courage and influence of Kevin Humphreys.
>
“The game and particularly our club are poorer for his passing. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Joan, son David and son Stephen, the current Chief Executive Officer of Wests Tigers.”

RIP. This is a sad day. Hopefully the Tigers can do what he would have wanted them to do this coming Sunday, and dedicate the victory to him.

@David Humphreys on 2SM correcting speculation said:
He actually lost both legs as a result of the four strokes he'd suffered, and most recently had developed pneumonia on the chest which is what took him this morning.

Condolences to the family.
one thing that cannot be taken away is the great memories.
they live forever in your heart and mind

The thing I liked most about Kevin Humphreys is even after he stopped being NSWRL boss or holding office at Balmain, he would still come along to the AGM every year and contribute to even (to him at least I'd guess) mundane things being discussed. He certainly didn't think himself aloof from dealing with the rank and filers. Balmain was lucky to have some fantastic supremos (as they were invariably called back then!) including KH and Keith Barnes. The success of the 1980s were largely attributable to the hard work of these men. Likewise it was largely on Kevin Humphrey's back the Australian league starting to take off and become the most entertaining sporting product in the country.

He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.
