While the Titans were celebrating another significant signing in the player market – they secured Canterbury centre Jamal Idris last week on a five-year deal -- the Sharks were reeling and already planning their next move.
Interestingly, it could involve the tit-for-tat pursuit of Titans forward Anthony Laffranchi, who is also off contract at the end of the season.
**Alternatively, the Sharks could look to Wests Tigers forward Bryce Gibbs, who is believed available as his club attempts to make room for Melbourne and New Zealand forward Adam Blair**.
The Sharks' priority, however, is NSW State of Origin prop Snowden.
Douglas's loss makes his retention important.
"He is a good player," Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan said of Douglas, who is from Yamba on NSW's far-north coast. "We made him an offer. He's made his decision to go back home We're disappointed. It just means the other bloke (Snowden) has become more important."
.
The Sharks could also renew their attempts to sign England captain James Graham, although he is believed to be on his way to Canterbury. It is understood St Helens has already begun scouring the NRL for props and Manly's Brent Kite has emerged as a potential target.
Incoming South Sydney coach Michael Maguire has made an immediate impact by approving the retention of five-eighth John Sutton until the end of 2014\. However, he faces a fight to keep halfback Chris Sandow beyond this season. Sandow is the subject of an offer from Parramatta.
Rabbitohs winger Nathan Merritt also inked a new deal but the most significant announcement came at Newcastle, where captain Kurt Gidley agreed to a deal which will see him finish his career at the club.
