You pick the best juniors at other clubs and throw money at them. It is a risk, but no more so then buying an established player and have them not perform.

Melbourne have to replace Champion also remember. And they would not be paying him much this year given it was Souths that sent him packing rather than him leaving.
Melbourne would be paying him a small amount this year and Souths would be topping him up.
