Wayne Pearce: My Rugby League Story

ARL Commissioner Wayne Pearce's journey to success began with Balmain police boys when a family tragedy showed him Rugby League was more than a game.
Truly inspiring

He was a bit before my time but as I understand he was the first NRL player to quit drinking because it improved his performances.

My personal "hero" in so much as I don't really want to make sports people "heroes"

I have had the pleasure in meeting and talking with him quite a few times since his retirement and move into the "business" world and even he reckons he was a crap coach!

I have many signed jersey's as well - I also have a signed bottle of Wayne Pearce Port - never drunk it.... don't even know if it was or would still be good?

good little bit with him on FCTTB podcast this week...or was it last. Either way good listen.

I was too young to go to club functions but had some signed stuff from his testimonial dinner I think. Treasured it as a young bloke.

A few ppl I know who met him thought he was standoffish when they met him, I think he was probably just sober.

My mum and sister were Balmain fans, my mum loved Pearce and my sister loved Jack, I was a Wests fan, but I admired Pearce, but it was a huge mistake giving him the Wests Tigers job as inaugural coach.

One of the reasons Im a Tiger today.

As a youngster amongst dragons and dogs supporters Wayne Pearce was the leader of a club that was somehow different and someone who Worked harder than most to be successful.

Today i try to live like that.

True, I believe he was one of the first truly "professional" league players - he worked his absolute ass off to make it - didn't have oodles of natural ability (and occasionally hands like flippers - dropped passed with line wide open in 89 GF anyone?) but boy he worked hard. As he said in that piece, he was driven by his dads premature heart attack to live clean (diet, no alcohol) and exercise to drive himself to be the best he could be. He was an inspiration to a lot of kids/adults at the time.

Wayne Pearce seems to be the sort of bloke young sports stars should aspire to be like. He was a true professional who gave his all every week and never soiled the name of his club or family. Young Mitchell doesn’t have far to go to find someone worth looking up to

When the other probable choice was Raudonikas making Pearce the coach was always going to happen

I love Tommy as much as any Wests fan, but neither should have been coach, it wasn't just a pick between them 2

I honestly cant remember who else applied but i always believed that the first year should have been one of the incumbent coaches just for the sake of stability. Then move them on after the first year

The best defensive player i have seen. Many top line forwards went very quiet after a Pearce tackle. Players have told me he was a very funny guy when on Kangaroo tours, and i doubt you would talk to any player that did not respect him.

My dad's favourite player. He is an absolute gentleman and yet tough as teak as a player.

Not sure how his son ended up being such a knob, he had a great role model in Junior.

Greatest ever Balmain player in my era, in my opinion, growing up in the 80s. Met him on a few occasions, quality bloke too.

Funnily enough, as a kid, I understood and respected his professionalism. He just gave 100% all the time and even kids could tell he was worth respecting, because of his fitness, the way he spoke; the way he represented himself, his club, his state and his country.

Black n Gold, never fold. Well, merge, but not fold.
