We need to adapt to the modern game - recruitment

Look I don't want to go off based on 1 game. Everything that could go wrong did. However lets be honest, our roster is no longer a Top 8 one on paper. It is very unbalanced. We will have more days like this in 2013 where sides simply over power us. Sides that are way more equipped and balanced. This is a side on the decline and wont beat any of the big 5 or 6 teams this year. We will have our good days im sure however we are as far away as we have been for 5 or 6 years. Tim Sheens and his recruitment gurus have left us with a squad that is not equipped to challange in 2013.

In the modern game you need, POWER, IMPACT and SIZE up front. In the backs you need POWER, SPEED and GUILE. You also need a halfback to CONTROL and be a general. You need players with impact on a match fullstop. Our squad is full of players that lack impact. I would say we have 2 elite first graders (Farah, Woods) and 4 or 5 decent ones that can be very good on there day (Marshall, Galloway, Lawrence maybe!!). The rest struggle and would struggle to get a start at most clubs. Moltzen wouldn;t play fullback anywhere else in the NRL and ayshford and Utai are battlers. Lawrence is horrible now lets be honest. Out back row is terribly unbalanced with no power, size or impact. And our halfback is a rookie with Marshall trying to dominate. Put this together with little to no quality depth and Potter is left with a giant mess.

You look at a side like Souths and they are playing with a squad that can dominate in the modern game. I hate to think what they will do to us this year. Out hope is with our young brigade and there is alot to get excited about there. Tedesco, Nuafalomu, Sirro, Brooks, with a couple of young forwards. There is a good mix there however they certainy won't do it in 2013.

MY point is our recruitment needs to adapt to the modern game. We sign slow outside backs (Utai, Reddy) We sign forwards that either lack size, impact or power (Blair, Bell, Anasta) Then we sign guys who are just battlers that dont have the tools to dominate in the modern game (Fulton, Tuqiri) etc.

YOu see the way we have played that it is now outdated. You can;t play a finesse game and get consistent results. Our recruitment is also outdated. If you can't guy the class 1 eggs (marquee players) you need to make SMARTER purchases based on a speed and power (impact!!). I think Penrith will tun out to be an example of that. They didn't have the cash to get the marquee but I think they will have made some decent purchases. Thay signed Segyyaro an explosive player who has impact, Manu a guy that runs really hard and dents the line and Whare a quicker then average outside back who can have impact. If you can't get the class 1 eggs you have to go for better class 2 eggs. Players that can actually make a genuine impact with the way the game is played these days.We seem to fill roster spots with blokes who are very average and slow, or sign players like anasta and blair on deals they would NEVER get at other clubs.

Bottom line is Potter is going to do the hard yards for a side that the bottom is falling out of. He needs to be given 3 years to try and make up for the mistakes of past. Quickly weed out the players that lack impact, slowly bring through the very talented young players, and make SMART recruitment decisions based on things like SIZE, SPEED, POWER, IMPACT, AGGRESSION and CONTROL.

You can say this is a over reaction but when you present yourself like this in Round 1 it does not bode well.

Its not all about being small. SOme players have ok size but just lack AGGRESSION and POWER. Then he have backs that are either too slow, too small or dont have speed. The roster is as bad as it has been for probably 10 years and Sheens would be thanking his lucky starts he got sacked.

Good post. So where do we look?? Do you have some options for 2014 purchases. I know our junior teams have some great talent, but its a massive step up from a boys comp to playing with grown men. Your right but, wheres the mongrel, we need a David Hala, Papali, Tamou, Brommich, Burgess. Someone is this mold. Unfortuantley i don't think we have it, or we can afford it. We need a game plan, quick play the balls, keep the defence back pedalling. just my opinion.

Great post as usual Eddie. On twitter/fb I see people saying we should never have let sheens go. This whole thing is because of sheens. He has assembled this squad and they have 10 years of bad habits instilled in them.

We need a full scale clean out like penrith did last year. I don't care who the victims are. I will out up with being a cellar dweller for a couple of years if it means getting rid of this crap. I mean we're going to be down there anyway, may aswell do it with some new players.

I think most of this is overreaction. It wasn't the best performance but its round 1 on the back of a difficult week. I believe the players are far better then what they showed tonight. Here's hoping they have a much better showing next week.

Good post Eddie. It's a thought worth considering. On Lawrence there's no doubt that he's lost some quality with that hip injury which is real sad. However it's often said it takes 18 months to fully recover from some serious injuries. I'm just hoping that Lawry thanks to a full pre season will rediscover that form at some point this season. Even though right now it appears questionable.

Who in their right mind would want to sign with the Tigers after watching 2012 and Round 1 in 2013 ??

So you just reminded me Pettybourne didn't play NSW cup or NRL this week.
It must be so much fun being 18th Man.

Reddy and moors loved it last year,we need to make do with what we have available now.
Out with Moltzen,Utai,Miller and Bell,in with Teddy,Nofo and Brooks,Anasta and Fulton to drop to the bench, with Thompson and Pettybourne coming into the starting side.
Buchanan was good but will play off the bench with Woods fit.

Tp the person who said it is an over reaction, fair enough your view. I actually think we can win our next 2 and be 2-1\. I think we will win our fair share of games. However against the top sides we will cop some hidings, make no mistake. God forbid and injury or two. The point of my post is we need to smarten up recruitment wise because this is an unbalanced roster. There is good young talent coming through, however there are alot of very inconsistent first graders (over a few years) that won't help our cause in improving.

Im not saying there all shocking and will run last. More the fact that in order to get up there with the Top bracket of sides again, we need to change our recruitment policy and go through a period of rebuilding.

I agree that a lot of this is an overreaction. I mean you take out moltz and utai who together probably cost us 3 tries and a lot of ball we probably would have been beaten convincingly but not embarrasingly. Thrown in Brien and teddy and all we really have to worry about is the back row.

Obviously, as people had said previous fulton + anasta = disaster. Pretty damn clear. So, one of em on the bench and promote pettybourne to give some grunt. Now, we should be able to compete in the forwards with every team except, souths, knights and possibly roosters. When I say compete, i mean anything BUT what happened tonight.

Our front row is actually quite good with woods and galloway plus buchanan of the bench. Also, later in the season gavet and groat will be back for added depth. So, to sum it all up:

utai out, moltz out. tedesco in, brien in. get some POWER in the back row and getting somewhere close to 8th isn't to farfetched.

I basically agree. Anasta and Miller need to go as well. If we make some changes I think that we are an average team that with a decent game plan and if Robbie/Benji fire could go alright.

As for recruitment Buchanan looks really good.
