We took Manly lightly: Tedesco

Sat 20 Jun, 2015, 6:59am
By Joe Riordan, NRL.com

Wests Tigers fullback James Tedesco has admitted his side probably took their opposition a bit lightly after going down to the Sea Eagles on Friday night.

Just one week after an amazing upset victory over South Sydney, the Wests Tigers faltered to the bottom-placed Manly side in wet conditions at Brookvale Oval.

"We didn't start like we wanted to coming off last week," Tedesco told NRL.com.

"We were pretty confident but we probably took them a bit lightly.

"Compared to last week, we knew we had Souths and the intensity at training was high.

"Probably coming off a win we were a bit more excited but a bit more lackluster," he said.

However Tedesco also praised Manly for their big effort, in particular their star halves who showed their class once again on Friday night, creating point scoring opportunities out of nothing.

"They're probably one of the best halves combinations in the game," Tedesco said.

"When those two turn it on they're very hard to get over the top of.

"I thought our boys did well too, I thought Mitch (Moses) had one of his best games of the year and the more he plays with confidence our halves will get better and will improve."

Tedesco was also very impressive for the Tigers, with 15 runs for 129 metres, seven tackle busts and two try assists, one of which was an amazing bat on out to Pat Richards.

"I don't know [how I did it], I thought it was forward to be honest," Tedesco said.

"I saw them both jam in on me so I knew I had to get it to 'Patty' [Richards].

"I was a bit worried I didn't really know where it ended up, I couldn't really see, but I was happy it came off."

Tedesco also gave credit to the Manly defence who he said gave them much less time and space than the Bunnies did the week before.

"Their defence was pretty good tonight," he said.

"We tried to go around them, go up with the forwards then spread it out wide but it probably didn't work as well as last week.

"We'll work on that, we've got a long week this week and a long turnaround before the Panthers," he said.

Wow now this does not sit well with me at all. Just shows how pathetic we are when it comes to be professional. Why the hell would WE ever take anyone lightly?? We have sucked all year and after one good win we have players saying we took a team lightly….that will do me

I'm very sorry

But how can this side afford to take anyone lightly ??

Really pissed off with this comment

Quote from Taylor …..

" Taylor said the side was punished for a lack of focus at training during the week "

Who's job is it to get the team focused at training ?

Shows the inexperience up for what it is,,,NYC mentality…no NRL game is easy...not happy....

The week to week grind needs more grinding...

Well if we thought last week was a turning point we have just been hit by a big reality stick with these comments

A bit lightly? A bit lightly? Last time I checked we were running somewhere towards the bottom of the comp so I don't know why anyone in our side would take anyone lightly. Just baffling…. Win one game after a couple of months and suddenly Manly will be a pushover at Brookie? The mind boggles sometimes.

To me this tells me that they have a young mentality and are a long way from being professionals.
This is all part of there learning, we will only really be a force when we can get in the Market and purchase some players.

its a slap in the face to fans when you here these comments.

Tedesco - We took Manly lightly

Taylor - We trained poorly all week

What right do we of all teams have to display this attitude? Were 13th or 14th and coming off 3 dud years and yet we were going through the motions. Make we want to say, alright good luck for the rest of the year but i won't be spending another cent on them.

Bottom line the club has a soft culture, a losing culture and really it does not seem to matter too much. And by the way, no recruits for next year, other clubs are getting serious about their roster, not us,

They didn't start clicking into gear until maybe the last 10 minutes….......all too late then

Definitely shows the inexperience, no respect for the opposition and certainly no respect for a side that's been in the finals for the last several years.

It was a strange week. I can give them a pass tbh. They're still humans.

Taylor's best mate from school died.
Woods and Farah won an Origin match.
Halatau, Naqaima under an injury cloud.
Coming off a big win.

I can easily see how training would have lacked focus.

I'm pretty sure after that quote he added "and it's our job as coaches to not let them get away with it" so he did take the blame.

Shows how origin doesn't only affect game days but training as well- IMO, the boys wouldn't have bludged if Robbie and woodsy were at training.

Important learning curve for players and coaches but how about we learn something BEFORE making a mistake for a change boys?
