Madge doesn’t seem sold on Thompson based on his press conference… I don’t know why but when asked questions about him he would digress from complimenting him although I know he did say he was a competitor, he just didn’t seem all that keen on him for example like he was with Brooks. Also questioned, if he could be our full back moving forward and again digressed from the main point and started talking about Mbye and how undervalued he his because of his defence. Just made me feel that he is blaming Thompson on a few of the defensive mistakes tonight and isn’t a good talker at the back. I’m worried.

I think you have read way too much into that, everything he said was true and wasn't overly critical of Thompson and actually complimented him quite highly?

that's correct, I just saw the conference and Madge was straight up with his comments and again he always says "as a team"

He basically said that he is competitive and lives the team values, that pretty high praise!

Sorry, but rubbish on the let in three tries and never see first grade bit. It looked rather obvious that Bennett focused their early attack on Robbie's inside shoulder and I suggest that you go back and have a look.

The first try, if Ben does not take Sam B, Cook pops it on his chest and he literally falls over the line as McQueen was still on the other side of the ruck. Farah needed to follow him across.

Second try, Reynolds and Murray, who was clearly Matterson's man, strolled through either side of Robbie, who had nobody in his sights, whilst the Burgess twin was Matulino's man. Ben did have a miss on the same twin at the other end, but pretty sure he got back onside for the next play to stop Cook from breaking through and running until he at least met Thompson.

He also probably saved a try earlier when he came across in cover after Gagai (?) had broken through close to our line about ten minutes in.

I would be stunned if Madge didn't see the overall advantage of playing Thomson over Mbye. I hate that Mbye is chewing up big bucks in our cap but anything can happen in rugby league.

I will also agree with what the Coach said about Mbye's defensive organisational skills. He is constantly getting players into the correct position in the defensive line and I would hazard a guess that is one of the primary reasons he was chosen as captain. Thompson needs to lift that part of his game.

I’d like to see Thompson get another crack at FB. Maybe Moses making Qld origin would be a blessing in disguise.

Probably trying to re-sign him for as little as possible.

@boonboon I can not make a judgment on Momo , every time he was given the ball in an attacking position he was jammed into the sideline, his defence looked ok though.

Similar view here. Made an unforced error, but who hasn't, generally did his job in defence and all but put Jennings over on the only occasion he had an opportunity to do anything. Wasn't outplayed by his SOO rep opposite, so not too bad.

On Maybe ..... for all his so called failings by people on here ...... there are expert NRL commentators out there who do see his value and I support that view.
Thompson has had a reasonably good game tonight but I don’t see him as our long term fullback.
This side needs speed and size in our back line and mongrel in our forwards before we can move forward.
We just can’t compete with top 4/5 sides with the current squad. That should be very obvious to us by now.

And how on earth do we do that? That sort of thing is solely in the hands of the refs, we can't possibly create the 50-50 calls to go our way.

I don't know but that is what he said, I did like he gave the Rabbitohs credit for the way they played and he seems to do that a lot and it is something that many other coaches do not do.

There was one telling moment in the press conference when he was asked about being frustrated with (the team's) inconsistency. He said; I'll leave that to you guys to decide and then when the journo clarified his question Maguire said; oh sorry I thought you were talking about the refs.

He clearly saw what we all saw. It wouldn't surprise me if he has a word or two behind the scenes. Smart operator.
