Western Suburbs Magpies Thread

Who else happened to be at this game - Lidcombe Oval 1968. Place was packed, although official crowd was only 8000 - someone was telling fibs - i remember sitting on the bike track for this one. Wests led 12-5 with a few minutes to go but a couple of dubious penalties and 2 late tries got France home 13 - 12. Mick Alchin and the French winger got sent off. The late great French dual international Jean Capdouze was a standout.

I was there …. memorable 👍

I believe the goalposts were 73 foot tall and Wests offered a cash prize if a goalkicker could get the ball above the posts. I was told that Barry Glasgow did it at training one night but I could be wrong on that.

Hidden in a secret place.
Ron you sneaky devil.
At least your kids can’t argue about who missed a goal or not.

You should cut them up into 20c pieces and flog them on eBay as “Get yourself a piece of great Magpie Lidcombe Oval history; the (former) tallest goal posts in the southern hemisphere. $50 a pop and $100 for the Allan Fallah signed keyring version.

You might be right. I started watching Tony in 3rd grade at Pratten Park. He was a brilliant ball runner who could have been anything. He had an unusual running style however that left him susceptible to coat hanger tackles and he copped quite a few. I think that dented his confidence and he never lived up to his early promise. I met him a few times after he retired because his wife worked with mine. He was a lovely unassuming and modest bloke.

Ha Ha, no mate, not my secret place just a secret place.
Apparently one set was recycled into razor blades.
I got all this from the interweb Google machine.

Tony Ford had a huge boot on him so it's possible.
He was my hero and I was upset when a young upstart called John Dorahy took his place.
Sometimes I can be wrong.
I was at the first game of the 1974 season when Wests best Balmain 62 - 5. Dorahy had just arrived at Wests with a big fanfare but started the year in reserves. Ford played firsts and scored 23 points. Dorahy had a shocker. I said to my mate “Dorahy won’t be in first grade any time soon”.
How wrong I was.

I n the fair dinkum department it's nice that the Magpies have this tiny fortress of solitude thread, because we certainly can't rely on the mods. to put any sort of handbrake on the villification.
I remember reading a post a couple of weeks back where a poster who likes to crow about his love for the West Tigers and his respect for the Magpies actually posted words to the effect of "Magpies directors and supporters are cowards and disgusting people". That may not be word for word but it was the general gist.

Now I remember thinking wow the mods will remove that in 5 minutes.

Imagine my surprise when one of the mods. was the first to "like" the comment.

How outrageous.

It was hard to believe my eyes, but that's the forum we exist in.

The irony was that there was a following thread titled "Forum Rules" bemoaning the recent behaviour in the thread.

Physician heal thyself.
