Wests Magpies may become extinct

u r right tim sheens didnt say it humphreys did "Having two sides also means we spend twice as much at NSW Cup level and there is a desire to divert some of that finding to our junior league." Why not have the wests tigers funding juniors and get more money in it? and u still have not answered my question what does this have to do with blake lazarus.

As originally a Balmain Tigers fan and football club member for 14 years I am happy to see the Tigers and Magpies get together in the lower grade.

So long as we continue to be the Tigers and play a decent amount of games at Leichhardt every year then I am OK with the merger.

The times have changed, the Wests Tigers are the future and I want that future to include lots of wins, semi-final appearences and Premierships and I think having the teams merge is a step into that future.

I have also never felt comfortable about having our players bashing each other up in the Tigers/Magpies clashes.

All for one and one for all!

Look I am not sure why Humphreys said that. My understanding is Wests Leagues Ashfield funds the Wests Magpies team and Ryde Eastwood Leagues funds the Balmain Ryde Eastwood side.

For me (Former Balmain Supporter living in neither areas) A new company should be formed and swallow up all the clubs, businesses, assets etc (I am happy to organise this) and Wests and Balmain should be disbanded.

Its all about the New entity >The future.

It isn't a new entity. It is a joint-venture.

I agree the only thing I would change from your post is that I am an original Wests Magpies fan and Wests football club member….I am even happy to go out to the beautiful Lillyfield Rectangle every now and then.

Today's kids don't care about Wests Magpies or Balmain Tigers they follow the Wests Tigers and the sooner everything is one the better.

I do care about the juniors because that's where we get most of our players from. Wests Leagues Campbelltown helps fund the juniors in the Western Suburbs area.

Do they…that's nice... I was always told Wests Leagues Campbelltown didn't put any money in for the junior rep teams and that it was all put in by Ashfield ?

I wasn't talking about the rep teams.

As I said. I understand the persecution complex that the old school Magpies fans have. That is your reality and there is alot of justification to back it up considering the actions of various admins over the years towards the Western Suburbs club.

I would suggest though that you view CT's post for what it is rather than seeing it as a continuation of past ills. He and alien have a history of jibing each other in this way.

This is a serious issue being weighed up by serious people and whatever the decision we need to move forward from it

What are you on about smeghead?
The magpies club is scum!!
I don't see why these fools think it's compulsory to love them because of the WT merger in first grade. You ask any player/staff at BRET and see how they feel about them. They have dogged a lot of people over the years. And that's why BRET takes great pleasure in smashing those grubs at every encounter.
I go to Magpies matches for the players, not their scumbag club who give them sweet FA but take the glory when the boys do well. The grubs even charge $8 for their State Cup games for entry alone, then double charge for the $3 teams lists magazine.
I enjoy blacking out the magpie on all my WT jerseys with black texta.
What Back Door Benny has in store for us all will be the greatest moment in recent years. Just wait until we deal with these Irish tree hugging basket weaving hippies on Waterloo St….

As you know as a western suburbs magpie and as a resident of the west yo know what its like to live with a stigma attached no club i repeat no club would have survived with the amount of crap that wests had to put up with in their history we are and will be the eternal survivors in the face of rich class attempts to do everything in their power to see us fail.just as a side note i am successful in life and now live in the city before blacktown but i am forever proud and loyal to what made me the man i am today.sometimes the nicer view comes when you climb the higher mountain.

Yes, the administrators of the game made decisions that curtailed the growth and success of Wests (eg: various changes to residency rules), but the perception that Wests were "survivors" or "battlers" is something from the genius psychic of Roy Masters that was born in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

Adjectives such as "survivor" and "battler" were never mentioned in the same sentence as Wests in the 1960's as the club was known as the millionaires club. I llike to think of Wests as pioneers in player recruitment. We were the first to use our leagues club to recruit aggressively, but as Roy found in 1980, our leagues club was also the first to realise that paying excess salaries for football players was not sustainable. It only took every other leagues club about 20 years to realise the same and push football clubs to find other sources of revenue.

I heard it is $8 this week but normally it's $5 and normally I get the mag for free. Let the haters hate Geo.

Maybe they normally just charge him extra because they don't like him! lol

I wasn't saying the Tiger wasn't good for marketing. What I found offensive was what he said about the Magpie

Gobbs wrote:
"The marketing tool of the 'Tiger' was seen as far more enticing compared to a Black and White native Australian bird that was the image of the Western Suburbs Football Club. It was perceived that to ensure that the 'Wests Tigers' product was attractive it had to be threatening, ferocious and appealing to the young generation coming through that could identify with a strong, dominat animal that would defeat it's rivals."

He says he is "as black and white as they come" but he doesn't think the Magpie logo is attractive, threatening, appealing, strong, dominant. When I see the Magpie logo I don't just see a native Australian bird - I see what Western Suburbs stood for. They were the underdogs but they always fought their hardest and we had so many tough players in the past. We had spirit. That's what I see when I see the Magpies logo.

….I stated that from a marketing and business perspective. That wasn't my own personall view. And it's true. You give any new sporting fracnhise that has to become a competitive leader in a saturdated market place the choice to assume the identity of a Tiger or a Magpie and you can bet your bottom dollar what animalistic identity they will choose to represent itself as an organisation amongst its competitors. The commercial aspect weighed heavily in ensuring that the new brand would appeal to potential investors and corporate partners and its subsquently done that with Wests Tigers now most one of the most viable sporting brands in regards to its value in total cumulative sponsorship.

The 'Magpie' to me is unmatched, unrivaled and intangible. For all the reasons you have stated and so much more. However, the Magpies in Rugby League would only ever be a successful brand as the Western Suburbs Football Club, due to it's history and tradition as a Foundation Club. I firmly believe, the Magpies Brand wouldn't of been a wise, nor effective identity for the new Joint Venture entity as it wasn't going to be Western Suburbs. Hence, why the Joint-Venture Club committe went with the Tiger identity, but a new Tiger identity at that, one that did not reflect the old Balmain Tiger emblem/logo . Those responsbile for creating the 'Wests Tigers' name, identity and brand did so, so it could be established with no baggage or reference to Balmain. They went with something new, something fresh, something unique, where a new culture, image and history could be established separate from it's two parent clubs.

The sooner people - the fans, former players and especially the media stop seeing the 'Tigers' as Balmain and 'Wests' as the Magpies, the better off this club and its die hard supporters will be. The Wests Tigers are still seen, linked, though of and referenced as Balmain, when really, they shouldn't be, as it's not the same Tigers. It's a new type, a new breed of Tigers in Rugby League, as as it would have been if the Joint Venture club took on the identity of the Magpies. It would have been a different Magpies brand representing the franchise, to ensure that it was viewed, seen and acknowledged differently than Western Suburbs. But like my original post was trying to highlight from a commercial aspect, a Tiger identity was always going to be far more effective marketing tool for the Joint Venture club

Just a reminder Joint-Venture = New Entity = Wests Tigers. Forging and creating its own future.
