Wests sign Joel Edwards

I'm with you Newtown, he played pretty well in the middle of the field when I have seen him.

I have never seen him play prop, check out his player profile from the raiders, no mention of prop.

Since his arrival from the Newcastle Knights in 2013, Joel Edwards has been welcomed with open arms into the Nation’s Capital by Raiders fans after his consistently wholehearted displays on the field and his willingness to immerse himself in the ACT community off the field.

In his first year with the club, Edwards impressed the coaching staff and his new team mates with not only his damaging defence, work rate and deceptive footwork on the field, but with his attitude, team spirit and work ethic.

The calibre of his efforts over his 23 appearances saw Edwards receive the Coach’s Award at the Meninga Medal.

Edwards’ second season was just as impressive and it led to the club re-signing him until the end of 2017.

With an ability to play on an edge or in the middle of the field, Edwards has proven to be a real ‘hit-man’ in Canberra’s defensive line.

The pain that Edwards inflicts on the field to opponents due to his outstanding defensive technique and timing, is juxtaposed with the kindness and approachability he has off it in regards to his interactions in the community.

Edwards has taken it upon himself to get involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities and a mentoring program at a local high school. He regularly goes out during his spare time to visit kids either in hospital or in schools to try and lift their spirits in any way he can.

Symbolic of Joel’s kind heart is the many special relationships Joel has with Raiders Members and Sponsors. Joel is constantly being asked to donate merchandise and his time to different events and as such does so without question and always out of his own pocket.

Giving up much of his spare time, Joel has worked tirelessly with the Starlight Foundation, Cerebral Palsy Alliance and St Johns Care to help provide a smile to the faces of those less fortunate.

As such, Edwards was justifiably nominated for the Ken Stephen Medal last year.

Off the field, Edwards became engaged to his lovely partner Kate in 2014.

As it says in his profile above "ability to play on an edge or in the middle of the field", he is versatile. From my recollection he was playing starting lock or part of the lock/prop rotation off the bench on the few occasions that I recall watching him, but may well have spent more time on the edge.

Hopefully he turns out to be on par with Thompson as a signing who went well for us after being a fringe player with the Titans.

Penrith have confirmed Docker won't be there next yr. Hopefully the club has something left over and is interested.

I'd be pretty happy with Docker.
Word is that he's going to St George though.

I would be very happy with Docker as long as his injuries have cleared up. Him and Edwards would form a pretty hard hitting edge.
I would also like to see us get Sam Anderson for prop. No frills prop who has a good motor and would be a much better prospect than Buchanan.

I think this is the perfect signing for us. He's got obvious talent & obvious motivation as it's probably his last shot at regular 1st grade. This guy is gonna be a regular and will be the perfect strong man next to our halves. Brilliant buying.

Those videos are really good.
Not just running at little guys but smashing the big fellas too!
Gutsy player…
I'm stoked on this signing tbh.

If he doesn't like Ricky Stuart, even better !
#Team Edwards

lol

If there is one thing our pack lacks it is an out and out hitter.

We have ball players and meater eaters, even explosive ones but no one that really whacks!!

Welcome Mr Edwards, a very handy additin IMO!

You make our pack sound like the roosters one  we have over rated plodders mate over rated plodders

Certainly looks the goods. Good solid defender who can clean up as well; the kind of things Liam F used to do!

I actually expect this signing to help Soaso Sue develop too- in my opinion, Sue is the kind of forward the Tigers should build around- while not consistant, he's powerful & can hit. Just have to get that consistancy with him. Combined with Thompson, and yes- Docker would be good too- the Tigers could be adding some much needed 'nasty' to the forwards.

Whose Thompson?

Whose Thompson?

That would be Joel Edwards' twin brother… oops...

He probably defends better than anyone we've currently got, so I think it's a positive and not a bank-breaker.

Raiders already had Fensom doing that kind of role, and Raiders didn't really like to tackle in 2014 anyway, seeing how much meterage they gave up in the season.

i'd say there's a difference between being a good tackler and a good defender. we'll see how edwards fits into our defensive structures. right now all i know is that he hits hard when he hits because that's all we see. with fringe players, we miss their defensive reads, marker work etc.

Good points. He also has to hit it up and do the job in attack. Its not good making some big hits but being caught out defensively or making 30 dud metres per game.

I like the signing but I'll wait and see how he goes next year.

I just hope his body holds up. We've seen a lot of big hitters come undone in their latter years as their bodies 'fall apart'. Gareth Ellis is one who comes to mind. Although he didn't hit like this guy, he none the less gave a good whack and we saw in his last couple of years with the Tigers that he was injured more and more. Making big hits takes a severe toll on themselves as well as the opposition.
Having most of last year off injured is probably a good thing for Joel Edwards. And of course, he's only 27 or thereabouts.
I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes with the Wests Tigers.
