I thought I'd rate each player from each side and tally the results up to make a fair comparison.
I acknowledge the 'Benji Factor' comes into it, but what I'm looking for is who are the better 17 PLAYER TEAM ON PAPER.

2005. 2026

1: Hodgson C 8.5 -1: Bulla 7.5

2: Fitzhenry 7.0 -2: Turuva 7.0

3: Elford 7.5 -3: May 8.0

4: Whatuira 7:5 -4: Makasini 8.0

5: Richards 8:0 -5: Skelton 7.0

6: Marshall 9.5. -6: Luai CC 9.0

7: Prince 9.5 -7: Doueihi 7.5

8: Laffranchi 8.5 -8: May 8.5

9: Farah 8.5 -9: Koroisau CC 9.0

10: Skandalis 8:0 -10: Pole 7.5

11: Galea 7:5 -11: Fainu 8.0

12: O'Neil 7.5 -12: Pearce-Paul 8:0

17: Payton 7:5 -17: Seyfarth 7:0

Total:- 134.5 -Total:-132

Ave:- 7.90 -Ave:- 7.76

Going by that, the best 2005 side only just pips the best 2026 team by a fraction.

Of course Prince and Marshall's high scores make all the difference between those two sides..

Can you imagine the scores both the Wests Tigers & Cowboys would have put on other teams with the current interpretation and implementation of the "SIx Again" rule ??

They'd have put 80 plus on slower teams! 🤔

A bit generous for todays players, unless your talking about potential?

The '05 centres are better then todays
Second rowers are better then todays
Too generous for Bula
Halatau was in awesome form the second half of that year
Fulton and Madden are certainly not the same
Heigno is better then Fainu
And Gibbs is better then Royce
And Payten is certainly more then half a point better then Seyfarth

Remember they won the premiership

Just my opinion

It's funny your ratings

If Hodgson is an 8.5 - Bula 6

Phats easy 8. - Big Mac is a 5/6

Marshall 9-. Luai 7.5

Prince 9 - AD 6.5

Galea 8 - KKP 7
Galea clean up and cover defence Wow

Farah 9. - API is a 7 on the down hill and can not play 80 minutes and he didn't at Penrith or manly

Interesting question.

We missed the finals in 2003/2004 and 2006/2007/2008/2009 so we are not comparing this side to one of the truly great teams. The 05 season was an outlier.

I think the fact it’s a discussion says a lot about the fine job done by Sheens, Richo and Benji who have rebuilt the roster in a relatively short period.

Praying it’s not another false dawn.

Prior to winning the 05 Season, how would the 05 players have rated? Not anywhere as much as you have rated them there.

The "experts" didn't even see the Wests Tigers making the top 4 and said that they'd be lucky to make the eight as "they don't have the roster".

I like many of you will revisit this comparison as this is the best side we have had on the paddock and on paper, since Prince left to return to Sunny ☀️ Qld.

Might be an unpopular opinion but I think the peak 2010/2011 teams were better than both. Should have won at least one comp, could have won two. 2005 team got on a roll, things rolled our way a little, peaked at the right time and caught a few teams off guard. Some great talent for sure though.

Early days yet , but its a similar team , with a similar style - minus a few hard heads.
Nrl sticks to their guns on the 6 again /cleaning up the ruck.
WTs should prosper.
05 slightly ahead on ratings ,just because of that 6th sense they had with each other

Each to their own, though waiting until at least much later this season, if not following it, would be much more appropriate timing for any reasonable consideration of the sides.

Particularly so when remembering what rating those of us around back then would have given the eventual premiers at the halfway point of 05.
