Wests Tigers 2010 - Contenders or Pretenders?

Contenders to win the comp however:

1\. Sheens needs to pick the right team - especially the problem positions of halfback and fullback. He has a bad records with regards to this.
2\. We need to get a decent run with injuries - especially to the key players (Benji & Robbie).

I think we can go real well this year - there are not many teams with as many quality players as we have. Benji, Robbie, Moltzen, Ellis, Galloway, Lawrence, Tuiaki & Tuqiri are all guns.

That is the key IMHO,but we all know Mr Sheens likes to try and make his selections work, even though everyone else has realised it is a lost cause and the side keeps losing.

contenders!
the only teams that arent are the
chooks,sharks,raiders,knights,warriors,souths.
16 teams minus 6 = 10 teams that can challenge (we'd have to be pretty unlucky to finish 9th or 10th)
OOPS, did I just say that! Of course we are pretty unlucky…......2009 is still fresh in my mind.

I'm more confident about this season than I have been for a couple of years now, and lets face it, if we don't make the 8 this season than things have to change.

I don't want to sound negative but right now there is absolutely no reason to think that this season will be any different than the previous four. If they're comfortably in the top four come round twenty, then you could say otherwise.

Some of you would be better served to not get your hopes up and then be pleasantly surprised if they exceed expectations. That's my plan. They've torn my heart our for three straight years ('06 doesn't count) so I'm not gonna get excited until it's certain they'll be in the finals.

Recruitment and retention has been extremely poor for 2010\. As per usual.

**WT has not recruited one player who has played NRL in 2009 to a good standard.**

WT have lost a handfull of players who played NRL to a good standard in 2009, ie Morris, Gallant, Galea and Payne.

Allthough this clears up salary cap space, it is a major concern for our 1st grade depth.

**If we get a normal amount of injuries, I will guarantee you all we will be looking at a bottom 4 finish.**

If we get **no injuries we should finish in the top 8,** even with Fonz picking blokes out of position which he will do.

The non signing of Payne and Galea who partnered eachother very well towards the back end of 2009 is a great concern. Gallant has the greatest strike power of all our fullbacks and no effort was made to keep him. He gave us depth in the fullback position.

It is reasonable to expect of minimum of 3 injuries to our backline this year. That will make us look pretty light on. Once we get injuries in the forwards we are stuffed.

How can we match it in the forwards with most teams anyway??

It will be a very grim season if we get injuries and I predict if we do, we will finish in the bottom 4.

We have Tuiaki out for potentially the year. Even if his surgery is a success the muscles have not been work around the bone since september. That is a big problem.

WT execute attacking plays toward the wings with a view of wingers scoring tries. Withou Tuiaki, Tuqiri will get a hell of a shock as he will be now required to do tank's job on the left wing. It will be a good test for someone who has not played NRL for 8 years. If we have not won more than half our games by round 12, I will again be recommending the dismissal of the Fonz.

Happy Days.

Such pessimism Bug…I reckon there's a happy fan somewhere inside of you but geez it's hard to see at times.

Bravo Bug ….very constuctive......

Thing is though your like a fortune teller.....with an amazing crystal ball.....

You say recruitment is poor yet you fall to mention the signing of a Duel international in Lortay, A represntative Prop forward in Cayless cause they don't fit your criteria of NRL standard in 2009 as well as extending the contracts of Ayshford, Moltzen and Ryan....

Morris, Payne and Galea did play to first grade standard notice you didn't mention Collis, Halatau or Laurie ...all these players have benn replaced on a lot less money I'm guessing by Daniella, Schirnack, Dwyer, Brown, Moors, Flanagan, Fulton and of course Fitzhenry....is that so poor as your making out...

Not to mention the likes of Gower, Akeripa. Pritchard, Davis, Mataka, Farlow and Taumata pushing from State Cup...I wont even bother listing the talent coming out of the 20's

I miss Gallant as much as anyone and I hope he carves up in North Queensland but there is a special kid in Mullaney coming up who IMO will be better than Shannon...

Why are you bringing up injuries ....you sound like Sheens....'Well we didn't get our normal injuries during the Year so we made the 8 and won the Comp"....Crystall Balling once again....

You say Poor recuritment and retention for 2010...I say best since '04...

Everyone's entitled to their opinion.....

Oh .......BTW have a little faith in the Players we got....You claimed once that you never bag players...Well 'How can we match it with other forward packs anyway?????????'......doesn't sound like much of a rap to me...you could be right..my crystal ball says.......We will dominate them. :sign:

I think that for us to be contenders, two things have to happen : no injuries and the coach has to pick the right team. We do have a bit of depth, but a lot of these players are a bit of an unknown quantity to us, some seem to be injury prone, and the rest are the "young guns" and we don't know what they are capable of yet. So hey I believe there's a lot to look forward to this season. :sign:

Balmain Bug, take a chill pill mate - I have never seen such pessimistic garbage. Alot of what if's - the same just about every team needs to worry about. I think choosing another team could make you a happier man!

Here you go BB…...here's the chill pill,.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjXN3OLgoqs&feature=related" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; \

Now close your eyes, take a deep breath ,listen, and visualize the Wests Tigers scoring try after try, defending their line likes it;s the Great wall of China, and at the end of the great rendition by Stanley Jordon of "Stairway to Heaven", just try and pretend the the claps and cheers at the end of the song is the crowd at the Greatest Grand Final ever, when the Wests Tigers beat South Sydney in extra time by one of the greatest tries in League's history....now where are my pills again

Tigers 2010, In 2005 we had very little injuries and smashed everyone. We will go great if we have limited injuries in 2010\. If we are jinxed like we seem to be, we will struggle, as does any side with injuries. Fingers crossed. As for supporting another team, no thanks, ive been a Wests supporter sonce 1975 and am not changing now. I need 'chill pills' introvenously.

Later dude :supporter:

That's all you got…..

Where's the constructive converstion in that......

Injuries....It's the Year of the Tiger....

Geo,

How many clubs in the NRL do WT have greater front row stocks than? Galloway is a great prop, Gibbs is a good one, Payten is a great second rower and a good prop ummmm who else ??? Cayless is 50/50, bad knees and has not played NRL for years.

See what I mean. If none of these guys get hurt, we are laughing. If they do, we are stuffed.

Im just being honest with myself.

Hmmm…without looking them up I'd say On paper 2....

But like us....any injuries to two of their top liners and I'd dare say they would be stuffed as well....

But Sheens said...'No excusses this Year'.....so I'm expecting with Folkes on Board...the forward pack would be a LOT...tougher in 2010....

I have had a look at the stocks of other NRL sides and I picked at least 11 sides that have better front row depth than us.

I agree with everything else you say though.

Just so it's clear we are talking just Front Row right…..Depth or Top Liners staying fit?

Since You had a look could you List the 11 teams....I had a look too without Tiger googles and as far as Depth goes I came up with 4....

Storm, Manly, Souths and Parramatta....of course that's on Paper

I think that at this stage of the year we are definately contenders.
We have plenty of stars across the park and are quite a balanced side. However should we get an unlucky run with injury that changes everything..

Names on paper mean nothing, it will come down how the players turn up week in and week out mentally and of course their are other things like will Sheens actually use his four players on the bench and how long will he persist with players who are out of form and will he continue to select players out of postion rather than promote a specialist from the lower grades. We have been through four long years so Iam apprehensive about getting too carried away. I think the failures of the past few years the players must take some of the blame but I also think Sheens also must accept some of the blame and make some big changes for 2010 in the way he select teams and handles his bench rotation.

But yes I do think 2010 looks a good one–but I have said that before

We are definetely Contenders.
For one reason and this is thought by most clubs,
If we do manage to get into the top 8 we are very unpredictable.
If our attack clicks we can destroy any team in the comp.
The only problem is if our forwards don't muscle up we will get rolled by most clubs.
So IMO the season relies heavily on the success of the forward pack and the injury toll we sustain.
