Wests Tigers agree deal for NRL bail-out

What's the difference between three Independant Directors (whoever they end up being) and a CEO who came over from the Silvrtails ? Mayer is not a born and bred Wests Tigers man … Yet most on here are singing his praises (some more than others). Can't see the difference.

I nominate Benny,Sirro & Blocker as independant Directors,LOL,.

Its going to be an interesting few years,Sirro. in the TV story on the rat infested old Balmain Leagues Club, said the future of the Balmain Football Club was in grave doubt, not sure if its that bad but our side of the JV is in big trouble if they don't get the new Leagues Club development sorted out..

A few too many conspiracy theorists here. Independent board members were a must. The Tigers have been one of if not the most marketable club over the past 8 years, with high merchandise sales and very good crowds (up until this season). The fact we are in a dire financial position and didn't capitalise on the brand we had built 'benji and the entertainers' lies firmly with both the Balmain and Wests board members.

Its not like Smith and Grant are going to be on the board. They will be successful businessmen whom the NRL feel have the skills and decision making abilities to ensure we capitalise on our future successes and are a sound footy club both on and off the park.

We won't be moving. Independents aren't going to rename us the South Lidcombe Monkeys.

Who knows, with a competent CEO and board making correct decisions, who knows - we might actually start making profits like other clubs do!

Crazy idea I know!

The idea of paying debts by making profits created by sound business decisions.

Bringing in professionals with proven skills, not just a father who once played for the Magpies or Tigers, who will be driven by the challenge of implementing their skills and ideas to turn a club from a bad position to a good one.

There's no reason the WT's shouldn't be profitable. Incompetence has cost us from becoming one of the biggest clubs in the country. This at least is a step forward.

How is this going to fix Balmains 9.5 million debt ??

In 3 years time , we are still going to have many of the issues that currently weigh the WT's down

Badly thought out quick fix in my opinion

It won't fix their debt - they are way up the creek! But they will be happy to have survived this disaster… the last thing they would want to do is give control to Wests. Only surviving through friends in high places.

Hope this goes through, as I am currently in China
The only way for Balmain to fix their debt is to have their new leagues club built. That's why they are in this situation (and the politicians).

They were expanding to increase revenue. If everything went to plan all would be OK.

A new club now would take years to recoup the current debt but it will be a slow haul anyway with a lot of meetings with the bank manager

Just wonder how independents will be selected.
Will the owners ie Wests and Balmain have right of veto?
And can this be reversed?

And questions must be raised how did Balmain get in this position and under whos leadership.

Sad to see this club sell out in this way to an authority who doesn't share our interests.

Sheens was looking very cocky in the TV interview about the Kangaroos last week,Parra. should grab him now,i';m sure Tim would enjoy the challenge now that he's been overlooked for Canberra.

You will curse the day NRL "independents" get on the board of this club.

We should be recruiting intelligence, diversity and experience for the board. That is the path to efficient governance.

So you are saying that independent people do not have " intelligence, diversity or experience"?

Wow.

No. I am saying that being "independent" does not necessarily mean the person is going to make the best decision. Other skills as I have mentioned are more important.

So, if the "Independent's" have intelligence, diversity and experience that is ok by you?

That is not what you said originally. You said " you will curse the day the NRL independents get on the board of this club".

Sorry Garry, you are wrong mate.

Independent directors are a fundamental and proven concept in corporate governance.

Im not sure how the selection of the 3 independent board members works. I do know one on the guys who has been nominated by our man in charge. He used to be on the Bulldogs board.
