Wests Tigers announce 2014 Coaching structure

We have a young team, and if we get a number of high profile teams in a row and lose all our early games then it may be difficult to lift the boys.

I think it is very relelvant.

No excuses for Potter in 2014 …. If he can't make a go of it under this scenario then that's it.

What are your expectations for 2014 Knuckles ??

10th -13th for me , this is still part of the transition Brooks will have some good days , but he will have some bad as well

And we don't have a five eight in place either

Agree with you Happy …. Although Mayer said the club was targeting top 8 in 2014.
So if the club doesn't meet it's own benchmark, I assume it will take action accordingly.

It's a tough ask for the reasons you mentioned. Plus we have so many young bodies up against hardened professionals with years of experience at the top level. So I expect a high injury toll again next season.

All good moves, especially the re-evaluation of our rehab and hi performance unit.

**Luke Portese got involved last off season but it must have been a short term contract.**

No word on who will be doing what, I'd imagine Kidwell will be doing a good deal with our defense. The comments on Kidwell working with strike players in attack is probably about developing impact forwards such as BMM etc.

I'd still like to know if we are heading down the path of a halves coach for Brooks/Moses and maybe Sirro.

He was here all year.

Not sure on Payten as D coach….he has been 'taught' by Simmons

I just got the impression he spent a fair bit of the year over seas and working on other projects?

Either way I am glad we have him back.

He always had a good defensive technique himself though. Time will tell anyway. But at least the club has been more proactive than it has been in some time with the changes they are making.

I know it's not saying much, but we had the best defence in the comp last year in 20's. If todd can adapt to first grade structures I see no reason why he couldn't be a successful defensive coach.

Im only going by google, a couple of images came up Im assuming is him, and Ive seen him at our games all season

Interesting appointments.
No specific mention of roles I.e Payten is the defensive coach and Kidwell solely attacking

Mayer tweeted that halves coach is still on the radar, so this might not be the final coaching structure for 2014.

Maybe potter will be looking at defence?

No freddy? Disappointed :frowning:

I'm hoping that _all_ the coaches will be working on improving our defence. It has been our achilles heel for many years and it needs to be the major focus of this overhaul, imo. Our defensive structure (or lack of) is so far behind the likes of Easts, Manly, Souths and Melbourne it's not funny. You wouldn't think a 4-0 scoreline in a game of Rugby League would make for an exciting time, but I found watching the Roosters and Manly play and defend, like they did the other night, inspirational!

I really hope our style of play is dramatically changed, to the point where we become better known as a team that other sides struggle to score against than a team that produces flashy attacking plays, sporadically, throughout a season. I know this will probably take some time to turn around - I just hope that Potter and co have it in their immediate sights to begin the process.

Boring…..... Robotic crap, we need to play our attacking style like we did when we had souths baffled at 18-0 but with defence skills raised by 80%

If only we could play against 12 men for 80 minutes every week

I didn't say anything about not having a good attacking game, I just said I would rather WT be recognised more for our great defence for once, similar to the teams I mentioned above. Having a decent defensive structure doesn't have to come at the expense of a good attacking game. If you think the Roosters, Manly, Souths and Storm play boring, robotic crap well…what can I say?

The way the game is played at the moment strong defensive teams are rewarded. Reduce the interchange and speed up the play the ball and the momentum may change

Agreed …. I thought the day of 4-0 score lines were over. What a bore.
Giving me fast flowing, exciting and entertaining play any day.

Dont see why there isn't space for both. I woud like the NRL to move away from having a largely defensive competition but still think there's place for 4-0 scorlines because they are great in moderation.

Its not the scoreline.

Its the game itself

A game choc full of errors and incomplete sets could result in a low scoreline.

This game featured great attack yet even better defense, both teams going oh so close but neither cracked (one try from a kick)

I believe it is Hayden Knowles who we bought in for part of the pre-season you are thinking of

The Tigers attack which used to be potent, though injuries and other issues the last two seasons has seen it stifled and the defence which was never a strong point, but when the attack was good was never under pressure, this got shown up big style more so this season than last!
I'm sure Mick will be putting structures in place to shore up those defensive lapses, having a more comprehensive Coaching Staff for the start of pre season will see a marked improvement next year. Also the Players coming in will help alter the Psyche of the Team that had stagnated under Sheens (the plus for him is the quality of the young players coming through}
The main thing is not to have another horrendous run of injuries through the season, if injuries stay at a low level then a far better season beckons for Tigers!
