Wests Tigers have today confirmed the appointment of Ben Gardiner and Nathan Cayless as Assistant Coaches to Head Coach Michael Maguire for the 2022 NRL season.

Gardiner joined Wests Tigers in 2021 as Head Coach of the club’s Knock-On Effect NSW Cup side, Western Suburbs — leading the Magpies to second on the ladder before the competition was suspended. Prior to that, Gardiner spent time in a number of different coaching roles with South Sydney, Cronulla, North Sydney, City Origin and NSW U/20s, as well as an assistant to Maguire with the New Zealand national side.

A former captain of Parramatta and New Zealand following extensive first-grade experience at both club and international level, Cayless joins Wests Tigers after serving as an NRL Assistant Coach at the Sydney Roosters. Prior to that, the former prop coached both the New Zealand Warriors (2018-19) and Wentworthville (2016-17) at the reserve-grade level.

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe welcomed Gardiner and Cayless to their new roles.

“On behalf of all at Wests Tigers, I’d like to welcome and congratulate Ben and Nathan on their appointment as our Assistant Coaches,” Pascoe said.

“Ben and Nathan are both young, impressive coaches who we know will add a lot to our coaching staff and playing group through their relationships, knowledge and work ethic.”

Wests Tigers Coach Michael Maguire said he was looking forward to working with the duo.

“I’ve spent time with Ben and Nathan at international level and know they will grow our players while adding a lot to our staff and club,” Maguire said. “I’m looking forward to working with them to build our squad and getting stuck into the pre-season together.”

Wests Tigers players will report for pre-season training in early November before the full squad resumes officially on November 17.

Gardiner, exciting...

Cayless, mmk... they say the bad players make a good coach.

Gardiner did a good job with Magpies don't know much about Cayless coaching record but good luck to him

His resume states he never won a grand final as a player.

Gardiner happy with. Don't know much about cayless as a coach. Hopefully @yeahcaz is right and it's a good appointment.

Gardiner is what we need - someone who can be personal and be the difference between Madge style. He deserved the promotion & got players performing better under his coaching.

Cayless - met him a few times he is alright, very switched on and be interested to see how he goes. He does spend alot of time in youth activities. Another point is Roosters had a massive injury crisis and the forwards held up ok no matter who stepped in. He can’t be any worse than what we had last year.

Now thats done lets get cracking on some new blood into the squad.

most of the good players don't make good coaches
look at fitler johns etc
look at Robinson Bennett Sheens Etc
Hasler probably the exception good player good coach

Happy about Gardiner, he has been impressive with the KOE.
I have no idea about Cayless... fingers crossed.

Huge congrats Gardiner!!
Love what he's done with our reserve grade team, they were my highlight and found myself excited to watch their games.

They were Madge's assistants for NZ. Definitely prefer Cayless over Flanagan. Gardiner has also been great for NSW cup. Looks like Madge is actually getting the support he wants rather than Assistants picked by the club which is a good move IMO.

Time will tell if this is the right move or not.

A very well balanced coaching group. It definitely is so much better than the previous group of Yes Men.

He obviously respects them and they respect him.

It’s a bit confusing Maguire bought both Collins an Millard to the Club having worked with the before … so looked on as his yes men ..

Yet Maguire also bought Gardiner to the Club and now Cayless having worked with them before .. yet somehow… hmmmm
