Wests Tigers produced a strong 38-28 victory over the Sydney Roosters in an NYC trial at Campbelltown Sports Stadium tonight.

It was a solid performance from Todd Payten’s team who dominated the match to lead 28-10 at one stage before holding off a late rally to win and complete their pre-season trials.

The team was well led around the park by half-back Jacob Miller while five-eighth Manaia Rudolph showed plenty of potential in creating some fine opportunities for his outside back. Rudolph also impressed with the goal-kicking duties.

Wests Tigers started the game strongly and were the first to cross in the fifth minute through prop Nathan Brown. Five-eighth Manaia Rudolph converted the try for a 6-0 lead.

A minute later, former Australian Schoolboys full-back Kurtis Rowe found open space before stepping his opposite number to score a 40 metre try under the posts. Rudolph converted the try for a 12-0 lead after 8 minutes.

Things started to get a little fiery but it was the Roosters hit back in the 28th minute with a try to a very fired up prop Tai Tuivasa. Winger Chris Taripo converted the try for a 12-6 score.

Eight minutes before half-time, Roosters centre Asipeli Fine crashed over in the right corner for a 12-10 scoreline.

Wests Tigers extended their lead to 18-10 at half-time with a try to half-back Jacob Miller. Rudolph converted the try.

2nd Half
Some fine play by Rowe resulted in a try to Rudolph next to the posts in the
46th minute. He converted his own try for a 24-10 scoreline.

Miller then showed his individual class when he stepped back inside to beat three defenders to score 10 metres from the posts. Rudolph failed to convert the try for a 28-10 scoreline.

The Roosters got back to 28-14 when Jack Siejka ran onto a short pass out wide to score in the 64th minute. Javid Bowen converted the try to leave the Roosters trailing 28-16.

Three minutes later, Siejka used his size and strength to crash out wide to get the Roosters back to 28-20\. Bowen converted the try for a 28-22 scoreline.

Roosters prop Brandon Tago found some soft defence in the middle to score under the posts in the 71st minute. Bowen converted the try for a 28-all scoreline.

Wests Tigers then produced some razzle dazzle after centre Michael Kai threw the ball in just before heading over the sideline. The ball was then spread far right before winger David Nofoaluma managed to scramble over in the corner to give Wests Tigers a 32-28 lead after 74 minutes.Rudolph converted the try from the sideline to make it 34-28.

Wests Tigers then secured victory when from a clearing kick by Miller, Bowen lost the ball in a tackle for hooker Ben Saunders to pick up to run 10 metres to score for the 38-28 scoreline.

This was a pretty good game to watch, and the Tigers played an enjoyable style of football. I thought when they ran out onto the field it was going to be a bit of a mismatch, as the Roosters boasted a significant size advantage over the much smaller Tigers squad. The Tigers surprised though, what they lack in size they make up in skill, mobility and speed, and they also defended quite well, getting numbers in tackles and keeping the Roosters big men contained for large portions of the game.

The backrow of the Tigers impressed, with Andrew Vela, Joel Luani, Brendan Santi and Kyle Lovett all pretty strong. The front row did their job although Sonni Paasi was placed on report for a dangerous throw and probably has a case to answer for.

The backline was impressive. Miller directed the play with ease, kicked well and defended well. It will be a shame if he spends the whole season in NYC, but if he does the Tigers will trouble most sides. Plenty of pace on the edges with Koroibete and Nofoaluma both dangerous. Koroibete made a couple of errors but his pace and strength is so explosive…I'd be adding him to the top 25 for next season as he could be a good foil to take the reins from Lote IMO. Rudolph was slick at 6 and also struck some nice goals. Be interesting to see where Payten slots him when Sironen returns. Kurtis Rowe at fullback also impressed. The Tigers are spoilt for choice in the fullback role in the NYC but I have to say Rowe has the goods to hold out Jordan Marshall who I think suffered an ankle injury today.

So yeah, they look to be a pretty slick outfit. Not a big side, but they're very skillful and there's plenty of pace. Defensively they look to be a better unit than last year also.

Did Jordan Marshall get on the park….I didnt even notice him, next thing hes got a boot & sock off and up the tunnel

He wasn't on there long Ink. A couple of minutes, maybe 5\. Didn't look happy limping up the tunnel, understandably so.

Thought Koribete was outstanding And I was really impressed with the 14\. Kyle Lovett theres no fear in this boy. Miller looks above this level but can't see him getting a bench spot in NRL soon.

As stated the roosters pack dwarfed our however full marks to our blokes I thought for taking them on in the main. The fullback Kurtis Rowe was impressive especially early in the game and I thought the propr Nathan Brown kept toiling away despite being on the end of a few batterings from his much bigger opponents.

Didn't someone (Underdog??) say that he twinged his hammy during warm up ????

yeah I didn't actually see Marshall get on the park at all - He wandered down to the Corner to do warmups, then next thing I saw he limped back, complaining to the team doc of a tightness in his ankle (he made a clenched fist gesture and gestured to the ankle area, I heard him say "its all tight")

next thing i saw was ice, then he limped down the tunnel - looking very forlorn.

Razzle-Dazzle is a complete understatement - this was deadset try of the year!

Sorry Underdog ,when you mentioned he did a Wade MacKinnon I naturally just assumed you meant his hammy

No worries Happy - by "doing a Wade Mckinnon" I should have clarified - "getting hurt whilst warming up for the game" not just doing his hammies… my bad.
