Wests Tigers candidate Ivan Cleary admits he misses NRL coaching

WESTS Tigers coaching candidate Ivan Cleary admits he misses coaching but enjoys the challenge of rebuilding the club from the ground up. Less than a day after the Tigers sacked coach Jason Taylor, Cleary has spoken of the challenges he faced laying the foundations in previous stints at the Warriors and Penrith.
“The similarity is that there was a clear mandate to develop at both those clubs; neither of them really were recruitment clubs and they were both rebuilding,” Cleary told the NSWRL website. “Both programs weren’t in great shape when I started, so there was a fair bit of work to do from the bottom up — and I enjoy that.” The Wests Tigers are currently without an established coach, while their so- called big four in Aaron Woods, James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks are all unsigned beyond 2017.

Cleary conceded there would always be challenging times for rebuilding clubs, but relished in helping teams back on their feet. “That’s all I’ve really done to be honest. It’s really rewarding to see young guys come into first grade,” said Cleary, who was recently appointed to lead Lebanon at this year’s World Cup.
“There’s a bit of pain associated with it because it takes a while for them to get a handle on (playing in the NRL) but yeah, I enjoyed that process.” Cleary is one of two coaches linked to Concord, along with former under-20s mentor Todd Payten, while Andrew Webster has been installed as interim head coach.

Sounds like a subtle way of saying "give me a call Justin".

Seriously what odds Pascoe didn't already speak to Cleary before Taylor was sacked? They know each other from Penrith and even if they did not you would expect some early diligence?

I think Taylor knew before the game he was done. When Lockyer interviewed him he looked like he was at a funeral. Very morose and down trodden. Then the throwaway line in the presser about the Storm. I'm sure there were rumblings all week around Concord. Maybe that's when Pascoe put the feelers out.

Ha, I forgot about the joke at the end of the presser. Can say what you like when you've been handed the blindfold I suppose.

I thought the same. Even in the "Coaching Insider" video he seemed down. Wonder if things had blown up with Isaac Moses during the week and he knew he was done…

Maybe after 12 months of coaching the Tigers Cleary won't miss NRL coaching as much!! Anyhow, I'm sure he and Pascoe are communicating about the position even as I am typing these comments, just make it happen (unless the Dogs indicate that Hasler's contract won't be renewed in the next couple of weeks and we get Des instead).

Pascoe has impressed me so far, for the first time ever I get the feeling that the back room is as one and all going in the right direction. JT was not the current boards coach and the next one will be.
Hopefully Pascoe and Cleary have had that cup of coffee and him coming on board is in train.

Fingers crossed for Des, not going to happen though. Any of the others don't instill great confidence in me.. I guess Cleary would be ok, but I mean he's really our only option so it isn't like we have a choice.

I'd be surprised if Cleary wasn't even signed up already.

Cleary set to be named new Tigers coach

7Sport on March 21, 2017, 2:22 pm

Ivan Cleary is set to be the next coach of the Wests Tigers following the sacking of Jason Taylor on Monday. A source with close ties to the club has told 7Sport that the Tigers are expected to announce the signing of the former Warriors and Panthers coach within the coming days.

The 46-year-old immediately became the front-runner for the vacant head coaching position after Taylor was sacked following his side's dismal performance against the Raiders on Sunday. Former Tigers player and NYC coach Todd Payten has also been in the running, but it appears the club will go with the more experienced candidate. After being sacked by the Panthers in 2015, Cleary is currently a part-time consultant to the NRL's referees while also preparing to coach Lebanon's World Cup team.

Assistant Andrew Webster has taken over as the interim coach however it is unclear whether Cleary will take the reins in time for their round four clash with the Melbourne Storm on Sunday.

Following the sacking of Taylor, Tigers Chief executive Justin Pascoe said their last two losses were unacceptable following a five-year absence from the finals. "We're not going to sit here and allow this organisation to drift again," Pascoe said. "And to miss out on finals, it's been since 2011, we're focussed and unapologetic that we're going to make those decisions."

It was just a fortnight ago that Pascoe said that Taylor's position was not under threat but a 46-6 loss to the Raiders and 36-2 defeat to the Panthers led him to question whether the coach had lost the playing group.

The club also face an uphill battle to retain star players James Tedesco, Aaron Woods, Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks. Just last week captain Aaron Woods said he will delay signing a new contract until he knows who the club’s coach will be after 2017.
