WESTS Tigers will confirm Ivan Cleary as the club’s new head coach within days.
Fox Sports’ chief NRL reporter James Hooper revealed to NRL Tonight an announcement will be made this week or early next week, and says Cleary could even coach the side in round five against the Dragons on Sunday.
“It looks as though Ivan Cleary is absolutely going to be the Wests Tigers head coach effective immediately,” Hooper said.
“We don’t think that announcement will be made tomorrow (Wednesday), more likely the end of the week or even early next week.
“Guaranteed Ivan Cleary will be the Wests Tigers head coach.”
Fairfax Media is reporting the deal will be for three and a half seasons, expiring in 2020.
It's been the worst kept secret in rugby league since Jason Taylor was unceremoniously dumped by the Tigers last Monday.
Cleary is one of the most experienced coaches in the game but hasn’t worked fulltime at a club since being shown the door by Penrith at the end of 2015.
He’s coaching Lebanon at the World Cup this year but will now need to juggle that with his Tigers commitments.
Retired premiership player Mick Ennis told NRL Tonight he thinks Cleary will be a perfect fit at Concord.
But Ennis also said Cleary could work wonders at Canterbury — eluding to the ongoing speculation around Des Hasler’s position as Bulldogs coach.
“Ivan’s a tremendous coach,” Ennis said.
“I’ve heard some people say over the last week that he did such a great job at Penrith, bringing that squad together and doing what he did there.
“But I hear Gus say after five years he thought he probably just needed a break, and he’s had a good break now.
“He walks into that Tigers side … with a pretty handy roster, a fresh voice and the experience that he brings.
“The two clubs he’s worked at previously have been similar in that they were underperforming sides.
“I think he would be perfect for the job.

I think that Ivan Cleary is the best coach we can get at this point.
I mean we just sacked our coach 3 rounds into the season. Even though i think sacking Taylor was the right move, if Cleary is still willing to take the job after that, I think we should count ourselves incredibly lucky.

Would love this club to get him signed up today, I would also like to see them come out and say , Ivan will take over the team on Monday and will speak to all the major off contract players over the next 3 days ( Woods , Teddy , Moses , Noffo ) this would give him some time to get an idea of where the players are at after he has singed on , if they are not staying he can then get his shopping list organised and start contacting some new blood for next year , we need this done now as players off contract will start signing up with other clubs and we don't want to be paying overs for the left over talent on the market .
The roster we have now I would say will be very different next year through all the grades and now is the best time we have had for a long time to clean out and replace with new .

Someone correct me if i am wrong, but lets say we announce Cleary Monday, how do we expect him to coach against the Cows? Would he not have to come in and build a rapport with the players before barking orders at them?

If they are decided that it is Cleary then I don't understand why he isn't announced asap.
