Wests Tigers to offer Ivan Cleary three-and-a-half year coaching deal

The Wests Tigers are set to offer Ivan Cleary a 3½-year deal after the club hierarchy met with the coach on Monday to discuss plans for him to lead the joint venture until the end of 2020.

The Tigers are now in the final stages of negotiations and wrapping up a deal that would likely see Cleary join this week – but he may not take the coaching reins until their round-six clash against the Cowboys.

The board has given the green light for chief executive Justin Pascoe, who has a close relationship with Cleary from their time together at Penrith, to finalise the contract before they sign off on the deal.

Cleary's pending arrival at Concord will bring an end to speculation linking him to the Bulldogs as a replacement for Des Hasler, whose future will be the main topic of discussion at Thursday's Canterbury board meeting at ANZ Stadium.

The Tigers haven't given up hope of playing finals football in 2017, hence their desire to move quickly on securing Cleary's services.

However the club also needs to make significant decisions regarding their roster, which will be Cleary's first assignment when he returns to the NRL coaching ranks in the coming days.

Aaron Woods, James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks have been waiting for the club to decide on who will be coach in 2018 and beyond before committing to the club.

But now that the picture is about to become a whole lot clearer, the club will look to finalise the four as soon as possible.

An announcement on Cleary's appointment could be made as early as Wednesday if the club and Cleary's management come to a quick agreement over the details of the deal.

There had been a suggestion the Bulldogs had been circling for Woods, however given the uncertainty surrounding their coaching position it seems unlikely the Australian prop would leave his beloved Tigers unless there were complications between he and Cleary.

Despite last Sunday's loss to the Storm, Tigers officials remain confident about their aspirations for this season given a notable "improvement in effort" from the previous two weeks.

The ideal situation for us would be to secure Cleary, and then for the Dogs to continue losing, putting even more on Dessie and uncertainty on who will be head coach next year. If those 2 things happen, it could make the choice an easier one.

Bellamy is by far the best coach. He brings in rejects and molds them. Bemnet, hasler, green and robinson walked into rep sides…

Bennett? What are you talking about? He turned an average Dragons squad into premiers. He even had a decent record at the Knights - 53%.

You are kidding.
Bennett had an 'average' St George team?
Boyd, soward, nightingale, jeremy smith, beau scott, cooper, young, fien, weyman, hornby, prior, morris, creagh et al

You have absolutely no idea.

Not to mention bringing back gasnier.
Stats, stats and bloody stats - ok
But don't try and embellish your post with untruths

Is Bennett in the mix to Coach us..that would certainly be a test…

Good Luck to Ivan..

I hope it gets announced before thursday night. That way we can cheer as loud as possible for the broncos. If the dogs keep losing, they will take us off the back pages of the papers.

Another belting could see Hasler the next to go. A friend of mine who gets bulldogs info told me to put money on Dean Pay with Jim Dymock his assistant at the dogs in 2018\. He also reckons Hasler has been given 4 weeks and if the performance doesnt turn around dymock will be interim till the end of the year. A blessing for us.

Dessie has until Rd 10 , but in that time he plays 3 of the weaker sides including us

Has this come officially from the Bulldogs Board..?

Maybe we need to do some more due diligence..

Bennetts stats are fair. But when you consider the 'background' money he has had at his disposal, it is poor.

Broncos with the 'Clydesdales' club
The he took St George and all the money for the one year tilt and left.
Tinkler came along with unlimited $$ at Newcastle, but Bennett couldnt get out of the door quick enough when that dried up and he cut his contract short
Back at the Broncs where the money is again on tap.

And you will all remember he was virtually signed sealed and delivered at the roosters some years ago. Oh shucks, another club with mystery money.

You read between the lines.

Lets see him at the tigers. Actually, lets not!

Been following league for over 50 years..maybe 60 and one thing I have noticed,99,9% of the time the best coaches have the best rosters. Of course there are exceptions, Wok Ryan did amazing things with Newtown, Sheens 2005 with the Tigers and Jack Gibson took the Chooks from not winning a game to the finals the next year.

I also think what stands one coach out from the rest is a coach who actually changes the way the game is played and the others follows. Coaches who come to mind Jack Gibson,Wok Ryan,Sheens and now Bellyache.

Anyway probably have drifted off the topic, but who ever takes over will be on a bidding to nothing if they can not overhaul the playing roster big time and that is why I like Cleary, he should have some pull in the player market. The bloke who name pops up when ever we are looking for a coach is Kevin Walters and he would be my choice although he has not shown any interest this time round. I just think the players would love him and he probably could attract some of the vast pools of talent north of the boarder.

Kevie would need a good assistant coach

What an angry little man, just because someone has a different opinion.

I remain of the view that Bennett made the careers of the players you listed. They were not rated highly prior to Bennett's intervention in their careers.

Whatever happened to Michael Hagan? He seems to have disappeared off the Earth these days.

I ran into him the other day randomly actually. He said that he has been happy working with Mal and the Kangaroos and that his health is better off being out of the NRL coaching arena. He said he doesn't think he will be back as an NRL coach anytime soon. Nice fella.

He was on the telly the other day saying he'd be happy to come here if he wasn't otherwise occupied.
