WESTS TIGERS - COACH IVAN CLEARY..OFFICIAL

Ive kept out of the new coach theory up until now, mainly because when the dust settles we have to employ the right person for this job…in saying that,we definitely don't want Todd Payten because that would give the clear indication that we are still well within the boys club and he is a rookie NRL coach..
We do need someone solid like as many have mentioned,Hassler,Toovey and Cleary..
My choice would be Cleary because he doesn't have any ties to the player group per say...he will be the boss and if they don't like it they can move on...no mateship type coaching...he will not be swayed by player managers and if he is then this club is destined to fail altogether...now is the time to step up,be an NRL competitive team and club or forever be held to ransom by overhyped, overated rookies on big money and their managers pulling the strings, its gone on long enough...Teddy is sensational,Woods pretty good,Brooks and Moses haven't earnt their stripes yet at NRL level and there are plenty out there that can do a better job for less money...

Hopefully a new era has started at the WTs ...no more mediocrity from the playing group right up to the board.....lets see what the rest of 2017 brings us....one thing for sure, supporting the Tigers is never a dull moment....

Well except the Bulldogs roster is a little better then ours but their players are actually outperforming their contract value.

With the pack the dogs have you'd expect they would win more games than they lose based on that alone.

Nothing has been announced re Hasler, so id be making a late play for him before he puts pen to paper with the Dogs. It would take serious overs to lure him, possibly upwards of a million a season, but the club needs an established coach with a long history of finals. Its non negotiable.

Hasler is tough but yesterday's coach imo.
Hasn't been working for a while and will leave Canterbury in a mess in regards to an unbalanced squad taking years to sort.

Hoping Cleary or even Toovey both with plenty of experience but fitting in to our culture and squad with a balanced tactical approach to attack and defence and guys who l believe will bring guys to our club something Hasler hasn't been doing at the dogs to well lately.

But hopefully within 2 weeks as this season is still very much alive.
Glad they moved on Taylor early, why wait another 2 months. A useful coach but not for us.
At the end of the day we came hear promising defence and consist results but didn't deliver and we lost a lot of players including a club legend and he didn't bring in much re new players.

The Dogs really got thrown by losing Hodgkinson I think , and some players can take time to replace , especially if there isn't a great deal on the market

They mentioned last night that one club was targeting all four players Moses ,Brooks ,Tedesco and Woods

Wonder who it is if true ??

My thought was Souths …...

The best 2 coaches the WT have had imo never played for Balmain Magpies or WT and i believe we need someone who has zero affiliations to any of those entities. So i dont believe Payten is the correct choice i would prefer Cleary above anyone else who is available.
i would like to see him appointed in the next 4-6 weeks so he can get started weeding out the deadwood (we have a lot) and strengthening the roster. He needs total control of the football side of things for us to improve. With so many players off contract we will probably never get a chance like this again to get it right.

Tigers have only recently hired two of haslers assistants. (Football manager and recruitment officer).
Coincidence?

We don't pump enough money into resources for Des to consider us. That's the gripe the Dogs board had with him. Our prehistoric facilities won't entice Des to Concord.

I think Cleary is the best candidate, but I worry for him if he starts soon, because it is impossible for this roster to compete with the better side. You can not expect to win many or any games when you have as many reserve gradders in your top 17 as first gradders, and no coach will turn that around.

The new coach who ever it is will be given a easy ride for a month, but as the losses mount up so will the pressure and so will the attention. Call me negative, but unless the new coach can attract some real talent and move some contracted players on nothing will change.

Call me negative, but we have been down this track before. I say appoint Cleary, give him a massive war chest and allow him to be his own man for at least two years

You negative Supercoach..there done..

With only 8 contracted players beyond 2017 the new Coach does have the War Chest and will be able to assess who he would want to retain or punt so getting him in sooner rather than later will allow a solid platform for 2018..

Just about everyone has written off 2017 so he wont be judged on results ..with the bonus if he does get this mob to perform he'll earn Sheenious status…

Geo, yes your right we do not have much in the way of contracted players for 2018, so who ever it is gets a pretty clean canvas to work with from next year, but I do worry at what talent he has at his disposal for the remainder of 2017, no team can win games with a reserve grade backrow and a reserve grade centre pairing. Anyway I hope I am wrong and a new face with a different slant on things might change things around but I just can not see how anything is going to change to we bolster our roster big time

I think JT was going to be measured very heavily on results in 2017 and his early termination has already see him gone. Whoever comes in wont have that expectation. To me success in 2017 will be in terms of re-signing who we want and adding to our roster for 2018 in terms of forwards and outside backs and most likely a half. If the club and new coach can do that then i think we will all be in a good mood for 2018 and if we happen to perform on the field it will be a bonus. Thats why i also think getting a new coach has to happen as soon as possible.

Quality Dad's-Joke there. I hope you have kids to justify that style of humour.

Well said TT :stuck_out_tongue: I too think we need an established coach, someone who will take no nonsense from anyone, and if IC can do that he is the man we need 😛ray:

I would hope the club tells the media one thing to keep the heat off, while working hard on getting things sorted.
To say the playing group would not be consulted is strange though, surely their opinion counts for something, even if the club decides to go in another direction, it's not that hard to have a mature discussion about it?
Anyways if Cleary if appointed I have the confidence that he will be able to make the right decisions in regards to the roster, and that the players retained would be comfortable in him being in charge.

I can't see any reason why it would take 2 months to appoint a new coach. We know what we need, the task now is to look at the available options, get a pool of potential applicants, then start the interview process.1 month tops

But say it'll take 2 months publicly and then take less than a month and people will say 'wow you got it done much faster than you said! you must be awesome!'

There won't be an interview process. This is all just a show.
The coach was determined before the sacking it seems.
I just don't understand why this wasn't done in the off-season. 3 games into a season is just demoralizing.
The board is a joke.

The sooner it's announced, the sooner we can start making moves in the player market. The right candidate is standing right in front of us. If it takes the club 3 months to work that out then God help us.
