Wests Tigers confirm Jason Taylor as new coach

While no one can tell how a coaching appointment will turn out, there are more positives with this appointment then negatives.

Taylor did very well to get Souths to the finals for the first time since they returned. Clearly he had some issues that eventually caught up with him but he hasn't had a problem for years now where he has been a successful assistant and lower grade coach. I think It's fair to say he has learned from those issues and is a better coach for it. Not to mention what he has learned the last 2 years working at such a professional club like the roosters.

I'm a strong believer in the best coaches being those who had to study their own game as well as others to milk everything out of their own ability to make it. Taylor fits this perfectly. He will have an enormous effect on Brooks and Moses. If Taylor can pass on the work ethic he had as a player to those 2, and teach them how to make the most of their ability then we will be in for one he'll of a ride.

Let's hope the players just dig deep and give it everything and we will be fine.

KS.. Love what you just said!

Taylor seemed agro during his sit down with the Matty Johns crew

Hope he can take that same aggression to his half time speeches and the pressos

Welcome to the tigers Jason hope you get a fair go,i as an old tiger fan of 60 years wish you good luck. How sad it is to read the poor comments about Steve Roach a guy who gave is all and more for the tigers and wears his passion on his sleeve to be treated with these types of cheap shots how sad to treat a great tiger like Steve Roach like this.

No disrespect to you "tiger jim" but i disagree. Roach was a tough player in his day but now he is an embarrassment to our club. With one hand, he claims to love the Wests Tigers and with the other, he's bad mouthing the club and it's Captain on national tv, radio etc. He's not a good ambassador for our club. He can not be trusted. The club must cut ties with him asp.

He definitely won't have the Richie Cunningham disposition that Potter had. He'll tear strips off the walls at half time if he doesn't like what he's seeing. And I don't think he'll kowtow to the playing group either. It will be his way or the highway, the way it should be.

He pulls no punches, and can be quite abrasive, though i think they are both qualities that may serve him well with the squad. We desperately need to correct a power shift, and hammer a few brutal truths home, both suit JT's style to a tee.

"But above all, the Tigers are confident Taylor has the ability to empower his squad and give players a significant say in the style of play that can return the joint-venture to the finals after several years in the doldrums."

"He involves his players in his game plans and they buy into it."
I wonder if this is unique to Jason Taylor, or an approach that is being used by other current coaches. Interesting - lets hope it brings us success.

I think don't judge him before a ball is kicked yet, judge him after the 2nd season

Welcome aboard Jason and Phil, now we can stop the BS Mayer wants Parish,Robbie wants Parish the players want Payten, the board made the call as they should and all the naysayers were wrong.
What people over look is Taylor not only played 276 first grade games,194 were consecutive ,the little fella played 9 odd seasons without missing a game, something we can only dream of.
He also was halfback for Parra in 2001 when they broke nearly every record going,he should bring plenty to the table, good luck mate.

Jason Taylor says the chance to work with outstanding young halves Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses was one of main reasons he went for the Wests Tigers job.

Taylor signed a three-year deal to replace Mick Potter, his first foray into the head coaching role since 2009\. A former representative halfback himself, Taylor said he is looking forward to working with arguably the best young halves pairing in the game.

"It's a big part of why I was really keen about this opportunity," Taylor told Fairfax Media in his first interview. "I love working with young players and have had some success with that. You don't need me to tell you how exciting and talented those halves are, I can't wait."

While he didn't want to make any bold predictions about where the club would finish next season, he saw the Tigers as a team on the rise.

"I'm really excited, it's a big challenge but I feel I'm well and truly ready for it. Everyone can see the potential the Tigers have in terms of the talented youngsters on their roster and some high-quality established players. I'm really looking forward to working with them. I'll look at the roster in terms of where we think we can get to but there won't be any rash predictions where we'll finish."

As revealed by Fairfax Media on Monday, Taylor will replace Potter as the team's third coach in four years.

Tigers players were informed of the appointment at a 4pm meeting at Concord Oval. The club also announced Phil Moss as its general manager of football operations. Moss joins the club after successful stints at the Eels and Penrith.

Taylor will return as head coach for the first time since being sacked by the Rabbitohs at the end of 2009\. Fairfax Media understands Taylor beat a host of candidates including Anthony Griffin, Nathan Brown, David Kidwell and Todd Payten to replace Mick Potter as coach of the club next season. All five candidates were interviewed last week in front of members of the club's new-look board.

Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer praised the appointment.

"Phil and Jason embraced all of the criteria that the club set for these roles and knowing that they have shared a strong working relationship in the past, the board and management have great confidence that they will lead the Wests Tigers forward", Mayer said. "The partnership between Phil and Jason is imperative with both given very clear objectives. Phil will manage the entire football program, with Jason taking on the core coaching responsibilities for the NRL squad. The demands for Head Coaches these days are so diverse that having Phil in the General Manager role will allow Jason to do what he does best."

After coaching Parramatta and South Sydney, Taylor has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach of the Roosters. Taylor, who played 86 top grade games for the Magpies before stints with North Sydney, Northern Eagles and Parramatta, went close to returning to the Eels as head coach this year before a late backflip by the club led to Brad Arthur being installed as coach.

Taylor oversaw South Sydney's return to finals in 2007.

Potter's two-year stint was engulfed with off-field woes, while on the field the side struggled with an array of injuries.

The Tigers will return to pre-season training on November 3.

Whats Taylor like with discipline?
This is obviously something that needs to be brought into the club and upheld.

If people are wondering about his toughness and discipline, I think those two qualitys are required in big doses to achieve what 851 pointed out

Agree Ink - too do what he did required a lot of discipline. He will be a great coach in changing the culture at the Tigers. I am excited to hear and see how things go. I am also now interested in what he does with his staff. The playing roster is fairly well locked down this year but with lots off contract next year I hope to see some strategic changes although not as whole sale as many given we are a developement club our stars will generally always come from within

I freaked out about this appointment yesterday but what I would like to see next year is how the team performs with an injury free run under their belt. Also interested to see what type of gameplan Taylor wants to implement.

Like you, Willow, still a little apprehensive about this appointment…From what the media reports, JT has a very good football brain but then again this we have heard about other coaches as well..Let's review this time next year, and see where we are at. Stability is the key, on and off the field, and hopefully results will follow.

Just as long as he controls it. I don't want the Tigers writing 10K cheques every time JT thinks we've copped a raw deal from the refs.

I hope the club as a whole has learnt from previous experience, let the coach do the coaching and give him what he needs to achieve a very good outcome in 2015.Moss sounds like a very smart operator and hopefully the inhouse interference to the coaching and team will cease and if all the playing group do their job and play football and not politics then a high finish is quite achievable…..

The one major key will be very limited injuries.....

Congratulations on the appointment Jason and good luck with a young and talented playing group... :sign:

Brian Smith did a review of the Football Club recently. I wonder if that had any influence on the board's decision to pick Taylor as coach? After all Smith & Taylor are pretty thick.

I'm not a big fan of Taylor, especially when alcohol is involved. Tossed out of the cricket for urinating in a cup and throwing it in the air during the Mexican Wave. When he was a player for Norths, after a game against Saints, he crash tackled (from behind) a Saints supporter, back at the leagues club, for wearing a Saints jumper. Then, when at Souths, he joined the players on Mad Monday drinking session. Sometime he must have upset David Fialongo because the latter knocked him. At the time I thought, Good Stuff.

Having said that, good results next year will placate me. To a degree that is!

I agree. It'll be interesting the game plans and squads he comes up with when we don't have injuries and when we do have injuries.

I think Potter did reasonably well until we had injuries.
