Wests Tigers faction saw Benji Marshall as waste of money

So can anyone actually explain how Marshall played differently throughout the year? Or does admitting to the fact that he played the same with the 6 or 7 on his back rubbish some peoples "sheens waited to long and he cost us" argument?

Benij did play differently when he went back to 6\. He still quite often got the ball at first receiver but also at times played much wider, (i.e the Ashyford try against Parra), which he wasn't doing at 7\. If you go have a look at some of the tapes from 2008 and earlier when he was playing 6 he would never get the ball at first reciever and often we would go through whole sets without him having a touch.

The 7 "experiment" although it may not have worked in the traditional sense, has given Benji the confidence to come in to first receiver when he wants to and take control, but still run amok a bit wider at second or third reciever. He's now effectively playing a bit of halfback and a bit of 5/8th where as early in the season he was playing wholly as a half back. But he never would have become that kind of player if Sheens hadn't moved him to 7\. So maybe the poor first half of the season was the recession we had to have for long term success.

Seen as though everyone believes what the tele writes it was funny to see in todays paper it was marshalls manager
that told him about this not Sheens.

But please continue with the i hate sheens thread.

Its funny how it hasnt been mentioned yet.

Might get warned for upsetting someone now.

So youre having a go at people believing the media, while doing exactly the same thing yourself?

OK.

Can you post the relevant article.

Ok mate give us one reasonable excuse for why Sheens has released this information and maybe the bashing will stop.

Who said he did your just assuming it.Maybe it was the same person that told marshall, his manager that leaked this story.Well this story would make sheens and marshall even closer which is a good thing and maybe just some motivation for marshall to have a big year or maybe it was his manager leaking the story so that other clubs think they now have a chance of signing him therfore bumping his price up for his next contract.

Look who knows and who cares really.

Like to know how 50% of threads on this site become a sheens bashing somehow.

Sheens told a journo, he kept it to himself and from marshall for this whole season it seems.
Obviously he didnt want it known when Marshall was re-negotiating…why bring it up now?

Sheens and Benji getting even closer is not a good thing at all mate. Sheens has been with us for 7 years, next will be his 8th, thats a long time at one club especially with very little success, so i think its fair to say his time is nearing its end, so him being so close to Benji could only be a bad thing.

**IF** the report on Sheens wanting a one year extension so he can finish at the Tigers along with some off contract stars is true, then u can expect Timmy boy to leave with a big bang. If he gets the extension, his last year in 2011 will be a mess, with contract negotiations, speculations, innuendo, and basically Sheens trying to coach us while at the same time poach our best players for Souths. Hopefully Folkes will see it all coming and have his own plans working behind the scenes to counter act it all. The way i see it Sheens will be putting everything into having a big year in 2010 to regain credibility before he desimates us in 2011 and 2012.

All pure speculation though.

lets hope that lang is successful at souffs so super ego coach doesn;t have a job to go to. (when we finally sack him)

Yeah all speculation.

Its a good thing if you think sheens would sign another contract extension and i think he will.

So it depends on what u look at positives or negatives.

We dont know folkes may only stay 1or 2 years.

These comments from Sheens tell me he is feeling the pressure. There is not other reason to bring up an issue that was seemingly buried. It is disappointing to hear if true as well. Benji has been unlucky but has more than just the typical playing role at this club. They would be stupid, to tell him to move on.

You know how these things work….the journo's would have known ........it was 10 months ago....More damage could have been caused if it came out then don't you think...... they where looking for something to pump the test. .......Sheens buying into it given his stance on Club before all else baffles me.....

As I said before...If Sheens and Benji are as close as they say they are.....Sheens would have told Benji exactly what was going on...Benji's a smart kid..don't think Tauber would keep it from him either..It's all a bit wierd.......

King Sirro's theory has some weight.......this could be very bad for the Club......don't think the line of thought that Sheens going won't have an affect on the playing roster holds much weight anymore.....Marshall, Moltzen, Lawrence, Eliis.........just to name 4,........all would be pretty tight with Sheens..........

Does anybody find it weird that when Benji heard Sheens comments and Benji brought up the fact that if Sheens gets the sack he has a get out claus when that really has nothing to do with the comments made about Benji?

Yeah geo i know how these thing work and so should you.

We are now listening to the tele and some weidler gee you guys must be bored.

Maybe sheens didnt tell marshall for the sake of the club.Maybe he didnt want to distablise the team.

Maybe he was trying to keep it from him cause some things are better left unsaid considering they did re sign him.

You can go with the conspiracy theory.

Maybe…likely is probably more apt.
But the question is, why bring it up now?
We all know its to try and help his Aussie team
Eight months down the track though, the ramifications are the same. No conspiracy -just obvious

Yeah I did find that weird, surely even Benji himself must have been feeling a bit nervous as to whether some were getting a little bit uncomfortable with paying him good money to be a passenger for three years, point being these comments shouldn't have come as a massive surprise.
Yet he seemed to get very defensive and threw in some subtle threats towards the club.
Strange happenings….

Rubbish this will blow over in a few weeks. Benji doesnt play for these faceless hacks. He knows they dont represent the club - he plays for the fans, his teammates and his coach.

@innsaneink said:
I agree with Sheens, but this is bollocks.

….........with Marshall looking to continue the white-hot form he displayed after moving from halfback to his customary role of five-eighth.
Yet Sheens said he only aborted the controversial positional change to douse media obsession with the move.
"I thought it would ease the pressure off our club," he said. "And it did - it got the media off our back."

We were 2nd freakin last. He moves marshall back to five eighth and we win 6 or 7 out of our last nine.
First it was ''so-called fans'' to blame for **his** mistake with Morris, now its media obsession instead of **his** own mistake with Marshall in 7.
Takes a man to admit youre wrong.

hes game didnt change one bit wether he was wearing the 6 or 7

That's the problem.

His game style wasn't suited as a half back in our team and he didn't change his style to become what we needed as a half back. We needed a half back to offer an alternative form of attack and to direct the team around to stop benji from trying to do everything.

ie. Benji needs another dominate half with him to be effective no matter if he plays in the 6 or 7
