Does anyone know if Dorahy kept working in his butcher shop in Lidcombe after he joined manly?

Interesting… He was my favourite Magpie

He did Ink..was my fav as well..pretty devastated as a kid when he went..

Nice reminisce from Roy..different World now..

Where in Lidcombe was it i grew up in the area, never knew about it?

Did any of you blokes ever go to the BBQs that the Wests Supporters Club used to put on in the community hall after the games at Lidcombe during the 1970s? They were great, all the players used to come along, Masters as well. Joe Cool was always there, I think his butchers supplied all the meat. I was only a youngster at the time and it was a great thrill for me to spend time in the company of my idols, Magpies coaching staff and others every fortnight. I had a blast

Few of them were at the back to Lidcombe day last year. Held annually with the Magpies NSW league (RM Cup and Sydney Shield). 6 May this year.

Did any of you guys join the "Dancers Club"? I recall that was supposed to be some sort of JV which would inject funds into the Magpies. I remember queing up to join and pay my $10 but that was it; never went to the club again and it obviously didnt help the Maggies financially.

As far as Im concerned, the loss of the lowly three or whatever they are now known as is just like history repeating. In the 1979 version it led to me having the second most memorable day of my football watching career - second only to the 2005 GF. After Boyd Dorahy and Brown joined Manly the first time Wests played them next year was at Lidcombe Oval. Wests won all 3 grades and conceded only one try in those 3 games. Winning footy games doesnt come much sweeter than that.

Good on Roy for recalling what happened to Wests.

On the southern side of railway line. In Joseph Street, one of the last shops on eastern side of street, down a bit. Went there for years. Was a family business if I recall.

Oh ok I have a fair idea where it was cheers.

Top read was in year 6 at the time and back then in 79 we were equal 1st just before semis before losing 4 straight including fg losses to both GF teams and finished 4th. Remember getting on bus to go to school in mornings and nearly everyday kids would rub me up the wrong way saying rumors are that your club has lost another one.

Yes and in 80 we led all year and only had to win 1 of our last 2 to be minor premiers which we needed as players were carrying injury and at Henson park last round we led Newtown 20 to 8 deep in SH before a Tommy inspired fightback for Newtown got them up 22 to 20.

Still should have won it but had injury problems. 1st game against dogs in 2 v 3 semi we lost 22 to 17.
Then we beat 79 premiers Saints 13 to 7 but got battered and with players carrying injury we got smashed 41 to 5 in final by Easts a game that depressed me for months.

The bus.
Easts.
The dogs.
There are parallels.

Balmain also has much inspired history that needs to be connected.

But the lesson for me is apart from not letting players go off contract at the same time is that Manly was trying to destabilize our club.
And now player managers are.

Great article. Thanks Willow.

Great players. Once had the footy cards of all these guys and the rest of the comp 76-80, before moving to Qld, and them being lost in the move somehow.

Going via the Pennant Hills shops on the way to the primary school, after knicking 10c from the Maxwell House 2c coin jar on top of the fridge (amongst a bunch of jars containing dead funnel webs in a foam ball of Pea Beau), chewing bubble gum and shuffling my stack of cards.

Wasn't a happy chappy losing those cards.

That game in 80 was a classic sorts like the 2009 WT game against Manly (the pass over the sideline).

And does anyone remember the Wests Man8game at Brookvale in 79 after The premiership rort in 78\. Think we only had 12 and played a super game and won with like 1 error.
Remember 1 set of six Manly had 15 from their goal line and they got smashed and went backwards.
Never saw anything like it only thing that ever came clise was watching Mason scared to run at Wiki in 2006 WCF.

Anyone that thinks Wests don't have legends has got no idea.

Was that the building between the oval and the pool?
We always left immediately the old man wanted to get to the club

Yes that's the one Ink. Your old man could've had a beer with the boys there instead of racing to the club!

The Dancers Club was into more old fashioned dancing if I remember right, I was into rock. Had dance lessons there for a special occasion but on the big night had a few drinks and could not remember a step - not appreciated.

Good article.Of course whoever, from wests current/previous management allowing most of the team to be off contract at the sametime, was stupid, hopeless and asking for trouble ie: Stagger the years when players are off contract. That grub Isaac Moses is getting one big pay day,all at the one time.

Wayne you are new here, you might have missed it, most clubs have a stack of players off contract this year due to the television rights deal kicking over. A lot of players last time around signed on knowing the new TV deal would start 2018.

Just look for instance at Broncos, how many of their FG side are off contract this year.
