Wests Tigers have an identity crisis

There's a definite shift from supporting your local team to supporting a team you like.

Parramatta gained a tonne of fans in 2009 because people liked Jarryd Hayne, we gain fans from all around Sydney because we're an attacking, entertaining team, and I'm sure the Bulldogs are gaining new fans all over the place the way they are going this year.

The Wests Tigers represent…the Wests Tigers. They represent their supporters, with feeder clubs in area's where rugby league is a popular participant sport based on historical ties. The joint venture rules out "community" based support like Cronulla or Manly (those communities are fairly cut off from other areas of Sydney and not as blended as the other Sydney clubs).

Why can't our identity be the franchise and not the local leagues club and surrounding area, or is that too American for some?

as i said ALMOST. and if u read my previous posts, i mentioned that the EXACT middle would be somewhere near bankswtown.. taken by bulldogs.

i know there is LCC (liverpool catholic club) near hoxton park who would love to have something to do with the tigers. it's a great place too may i add.

Have you seen the latest Wests Tigers email? LCC gets a mention…

WESTS TIGERS HOLIDAY CLINIC
There will be no better way to spend these school holidays than brushing up on your footy skills and attending an ARL Development Wests Tigers holiday clinic. Registrations close on Friday 29th of June and numbers are limited, so make sure you book early!
>
All clinics run from 10am-2pm and will be held at the below venues:
• Appin Park – Tuesday 3 July
• Leichhardt Oval – Thursday 5 July
• Liverpool Catholic Club – Friday 6 July
• Campbelltown Stadium – Monday 9 July
• Kirkham Park, Camden – Friday 13 July

Interesting that 4 of the 5 clinics are happening in the south west and only 1 in the inner west. Is this due to the demographics of the different areas (more kids further out)?

Is it strange that this year of all years the Wests Tigers are finally putting some effort into the South West Sydney area?

Does it really matter Galahs? It's what you wanted and it's happening isn't it?

Anyone would think you'd be happy that they've taken notice of some of your concerns and have been proactive in increasing their presence in the area with the kids in particular (after all, it was about the kids wasn't it?) Now you call their motives into question…

No its great. I just wonder why if the South West has always been such a priority why its taken so long for this level of commitment to the area to happen.

I applaud the Wests Tigers for this clinic, keep em coming!

Fair enough Galahs, it just seemed your previous comment was a little backhanded that's all. Sure WT have sat on their hands a little, but you can't begrudge them when they finally listen to you and get involved.

It's good to see that WT are trying to engage with the kids in the area, as they're the future players and fans of the club. It's pleasing to see that you acknowledge that WT are addressing some of your concerns.

you were right however, it was a backhanded comment…

I just hope whatever happens with the whole Magpie saga, Wests Tigers continue and increase their junior development programs in the area.

I hope it just isn't a sweetener to get their way and then they again drop off the task at hand.

the area is too important for Rugby Leagues future.

I hope it's not either, it would severely damage WT credibility and quite possibly alienate a large number of people in the area.

And you're right… It's bigger than just WT not engaging Macarthur, it's WT neglecting a responsility to help grow Rugby League in general.

I always reckon there is somewhat of a paradox in so far as West Tigers have this great big area to promote and develop Rugby League, put all there resources into developing it and making it into something of a Rugby League nursery. Then there are clubs like Manly and Easts who have no junior league but can come in and take what we have developed. Just makes me wonder if the clubs with no juniors are better off than the ones with the juniors.

Manly or the Roosters may be able to cherry pick the junior players but can they cherry pick the fans? Having a larger area as our nursery should equate to a larger fan base, which improves the club's profitability. If we are successful, it will be easier for us to hang onto the best juniors, so it all works out in the end…

All this talk about juniors this juniors that it's all garbage,as posted above as soon as these kids show anything they will go to the highest bidder and there is plenty .

Who is this Guy - Curtis Woodward?

What are his creds to be passing comment with this all knowing disrespectful tone??

I agree that the tigers Must take total ownership of the MacArthur region and make it one of our strongholds.

Time and time again we have this same types of discussions that our beloved tigers are blessed and cursed with support from two very different geographical areas and the rest.

Until our two smaller grounds are upgraded (Parking included) I am putting up with Concord and the Game Split.

Agree, he sounds like a disgruntled fan who is angry at only 4 games a year in Cambo

See Melbourne

Yes !

So we put in all the money and they come along and take the cream off the top.
I reckon it's unfair …. Should be discounts in the salary cap if you develop your own.

It certainly doesn't hurt the Roosters and Manly both having millionaires running their clubs

To say that juniors aren't an important aspect to a club is complete and utter crap and dare i say agenda driven

Our ''own'' go to school on the Gold coast and are invited from places like NZ etc…among other things.

I'm glad we have maintained strong links to St Greg's and Holy Cross but you would think it is only a matter of time before Keebra Park fall under the Titans

Although as you say, other clubs can "buy" your best players, but in general they have to pay over to get a player to move, you do benefit greatly from bringing them into your system yourself.
Whether you bring them from your junior league, other channels (keebra etc) or scout them young and get them into a program (matt groat style) in general once there they stay unless someone pays significantly more, the second tier cap prevents too much ripping off (excluding Melbourne who were not restricted by any caps over the years)

I hope we keep the Keebra park connection, it has been amazing for us, and Greg Lenton is a genius talent spotter, he seems to see ability in players where others dont, like Alf as said, I fear that we may lose it to the Titans.

Believe me I am not a Sea Eagles fan, but Knuckles why do you say that Manly has 'no junior rugby league'? They do…
