WESTS TIGERS IMPRESS WITH FINE DISPLAY IN NYC WIN

Two tries each to Tim Simona, Limoni Kamuta and Marika Koroibete led the way for Wests Tigers in their comprehensive 38-14 win over South Sydney Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium tonight.
The win makes it three in a row for Grant Jones’ men who are now firmly entrenched in the top eight in the NYC U20s competition.
Despite conceding the first try of the match, the visitors hit back strongly when they scored two tries in the space of five minutes to take the lead 8-4 after just 15 mins. Both tries were well worked plays down the right side with Simona scoring the first of these and having a hand in the other.
Wests Tigers were then their own worst enemy when they made two mistakes in consecutive sets of six, both inside their own half.
Despite the errors, Wests Tigers’ defence held firm and thanks to some positive attacking play, Wests Tigers got another chance of their own.
After a repeat set of six, Wests Tigers centre Simona dived on a Curtis Sironen grubber to take his side out to a 12-4 lead. The momentum stayed with Wests Tigers when they scored their fourth try thanks to well worked move which resulted in Koroibete scoring the first of his two tries.
The ball went from Sironen to half-back Jacob Miller who then put a pin point kick across the field to Koroibete who took the ball well under pressure and managed to step inside two Rabbitohs cover defenders to score next to the uprights.
Wests Tigers maintained control in the second half despite the Rabbitohs threatening to fight back when they made the score 22-10 with 25 minutes to go. The try breathed some life into the home side but Wests Tigers absorbed the extra pressure and when Kamuta scored his second in the right hand corner off another Sironen grubber kick, the result was never in doubt. Miller’s conversion from close to the touch line took Wests Tigers out to a 28-10 lead.
However the one of the most impressive moments in the half came in the 48th minute when Koroibete scored his second four pointer. With Souths on the attack, Kamuta picked up a loose ball against the run of the play and raced 50 metres downfield before the cover defence chased him down. Wests Tigers then used the full width of the field by putting the ball through the hands. Using their extra numbers, the ball got to the big Fijian winger on the left and his speed did the rest.
Refusing to give in, Souths continued to throw the ball around and when they scored in the corner to make the scores 28-14, the home fans were hoping for a miracle.
However Wests Tigers were always in control and scored two tries within the last five minutes to make the score 38-14 when the final whistle was blown. The win avenges the 24-22 loss to the Rabbitohs in Round Five.
