Wests Tigers sign Rugby winger John Grant

195cm tall, same height as KG.. doesn't lumber around like Keef though, obviously. Might be one of those astute Sheens signings, bolt from nowhere and nab a spot in FG.. or he might go unsighted and play A grade all year.

I know a few boys that have played with and against him they say he's lightning but has the heart the size of a pea.

I have seen him play in the Shute Shield and he goes good but like said previously its a lot different to the NRL. Most local A grade rugby league sides would be at the top of the Shute Shield ladde.r

That's a pretty big call….

I don't think they'd be too many A grade league sides who'd be on top of the Shute Shield. But then again ignorance is bliss....

I'd be interested in knowing the boys who played with and against who think he's got a heart like a pea. If Matt Burke says that he rates John Grant then I think that is a fair enough recommendation for me.

Pretty sure Matt Burke has never played with or against John Grant and im also pretty sure that what I said about Grant is common knowledge in Rugby circles…

His uncle James was not the worst rugby convert, so he has pedigree. But is better than a host of kids coming through the ranks ??? Thats the question

Defence in league is very different than Union Especially with short kicks, grubbers and bombs . Very few union players make successful careers as leaguies . Jumper Leeds was a wallaby in union but couldn't get past club league . Brett Papworth , James Grant was ok , The only backs I can remember did well apart from Michael O'connor were halves or five eights . Ricky Stuart , Wally Lewis and Geoff Richardson .

not bad.
will wait for the official announcement, and if they reveal any plans of where he would be playing.

Sorry forgot about Fairfax probably as he was a Rooster

Conversions across codes (and their success or otherwise) depends on the player's ability, with a bit of luck thrown in. Like Brett Papworth, an absolute talent in union, then had the worst luck ever re injuries, and never really made it in league.

There again, if the football gods are kind, talent rises - even for outside backs - like Michael Cleary (OK back in time a bit, but not as long back as Dally Messenger!!), Ryan Cross, Daryl Halligan, Russell Fairfax, John Brass, Andrew Leeds, Michael O Connor, Lesley Vainikolo and Matthew Ridge.

If this Grant comes across, I really hope it's a win-win, he has been shunned by the politics of the rah rahs not getting a look-in in the super15 squads, so he will have great motivation to prove his worth here in league.

I didn't suggest that Matt Burke did play with or against John Grant I merely said he had a high opinion of him.

And I'm absolutely sure there are people in Rugby Circles who disagree with you….

Just exchanged a couple of messages with my nephew who played with him for a few seasons and supposedly he's big, fast and no mention of pea hearted.

Tall, quick, knows his way to the tryline, but a real string bean.
Will need to bulk up without losing pace during off season if he's going to make it in NRL
Interesting spec signing

I have a mate who is a tragic Eastwood fan. When I advised him this morning he said this:

You bastards stole Grant from us!!!!!!!!!! He’s one of the fastest runners in all codes (came 2nd in that sprinting challenge of the codes).

I wouldn’t call him lanky. He a superb finisher – really strong at busting through tackles and running down the line. He’ll be good.

All sounds good to me.

He sounds impressive, and looks big from what ive seen on youtube - i'd say almost as big as tuqiri.

an astute purchase if confirmed to be true.

I'm excited by this, I hope it's true.

Plenty of size and SPEED, which we are desperate for. Hopefully he gets groomed to play fullback, I'm sure he'll be great under the high ball.

By 'big boot' does that mean he could be a goal kicker too? Pat Richards clone?

Boys it could take this bloke a year or so to get the hang of playing league, & i hope he didnt cost us to much thats if we have signed him, or is it another rumour.

Don't we just have to tell him not to kick it! He is a winger so it is unlikely he ever found himself in a maul anyway

I'm an Eastwood member and a big fan of this guy. I was only thinking the other day he would go alright in league. If he gets the ball in open space no one will catch him. He absolutely blows defenders away in the first ten metres.

He is no string bean, the guy is huge. I know it could take a while to settle into league, but he would come cheap and has great potential.

So we should sign him because he is quick in a rubbish sport or because he is related to James?

Marika K, the NYC winger is lightning quick, elusive and runs the ball back with venom. He should be on a NRL contract next season.
