Wests Tigers sign Rugby winger John Grant

we have nothing to lose by this so it cant be a bad decision at all. We will pay him minimum contract NRL, which will be 5x more than he gets at Eastwood Rugby. If it doesnt work out we have not lost a thing. If it works out who knows we could have one of the more lethal wingers in the game. I dont expect him to come on next year as he will have to get used to alot of things, such as getting into dummy half and helping out, and not kicking it (Having a big boot in union for example is nullified and no use in league).

But he is tall and quick. All he needs to do is be able to position himself, as well as catch bombs (dont get many bombs in union all be it more kicks) and he could be anthing. If it comes off, having a winger with that size could be lethal.

If it turns out good,he may be a fullback,a fullback who is big and fast does wonders for the team.

Sounds exciting.
Sheens and Humphries have something up their sleeve, otherwise I can't see how they'd let McKinnon and Moltzen leave. Is this it?
Maybe Lote to fullback and Grant on the wing to warm him into league.

I wonder if the Moltzen announcement by the Dragons disrupted negotiations with this bloke. All of a sudden he'd know we are short for fullbacks. Might have jumped his price up a bit.

I hope we've got him. He'd still come at a bragain price.

There was a salary cap exemption for signing (young) union players at some point. I've got no idea if it is still in the cap rules.

And Tim McGann was going to kill it in the NRL too….

Saffy won a premiership though and TNT was a Union convert to league when spotted by Royce

Tall, quick, knows his way to the tryline, but a real **string bean**.
Will need to bulk up without losing pace during off season if he's going to make it in NRL
Interesting spec signing

I'm an Eastwood member and a big fan of this guy. I was only thinking the other day he would go alright in league. If he gets the ball in open space no one will catch him. He absolutely blows defenders away in the first ten metres.

He is no string bean, the guy is huge. I know it could take a while to settle into league, but he would come cheap and has great potential.

His stated weight is 102 kgs, which is identical to Lote(although Lote is an inch shorter),so he in fact is no lightweight.
Different body shapes at this stage tho,& Grant mite need an extra few kgs on board to handle the rigours of NRL to put it constructively
Cld go ok

If signed i would expect him to play at Fullback with Lote and Reddy on the wings. If he does play wing though i would think Lote would shift to fullback.

MANLY RU HAD A BIG BLACK WINGER LAST YEAR WHO WENT TO FRENCH RU HE WAS 6'4 AND ABOUT 120KG AND WAS VERY QUICK AND A GOOD DEFENDER. MAYBE THERE IS GOOD PICKINGS IN RU AGAIN.CANT REMEMBER HIS NAME BUT WAS SCORING PLENTY OT TRIES.

That wasn't Lote's cousin (?) was it. He used to play union for Randwick before switching to Manly? I wondered where he'd gone cause I thought I heard mention that the Tigers were looking at him, then he seemed to disappear.

I think his name was Ratu Nasigamuyavi or something similar 😕 He was a big unit.

Also like what I've seen of Grant. Wouldn't be disappointed if we signed him.

DEANO I THINK THAT WAS HIM, HE WAS EXCELLENT,WENT OVERSEAS BECAUSE HE COULD NOT GET A RUN IN SUPER 14.VERY HANDY PLAYER.

Defence in league is very different than Union Especially with short kicks, grubbers and bombs . Very few union players make successful careers as leaguies . Jumper Leeds was a wallaby in union but couldn't get past club league . Brett Papworth , James Grant was ok , The only backs I can remember did well apart from Michael O'connor were halves or five eights . Ricky Stuart , Wally Lewis and Geoff Richardson .

Leeds deserved to play for the Blues,Brass was a fine centre,Fairfax,TNT, were ok too.

I agree, Leeds was a very good footballer, and his defence was outstanding. His field position was also one of his biggest attributes.

I think Grant is worth a shot, playing Fullback in Union will definatley teach him field position and obviously kicking.

seen him play in the city country clash at coogee early on in the season … i think he scored the first ry from memory ....is tall and fast ....will have a kicking game ....so has he signed with us .. is it official ?
as somebody else said ,,, nephew of james ... who went well in the tigers colours late 80s...

good front on picture to see his size vs Hayne and Inglis
and obviously has the speed too.. wouldn't mind if we did sign him

This was posted on the green and gold rugby site…

After finishing his apprenticeship last year, John took this year off to concentrate on his rugby. With no offers on the table from the Provinces he had to make a decision. Apparently within an hour of agreeing to go to West Tigers he got a call from the Brumbies asking if he would train with them!
