I’ll add to this . Laurie doesn’t lurk around the ball as well . Last year when he was “lurking” it was for the outside in play with AD or a forward . It looked coached IMO .
He just doesn’t push up around the ball , and have that ability to see the space .not everyone does . But your fullback has to at least have the ability to be taught it .
Dillon will be wearing the 1 by the end of the year , if that is what Laurie is going to dish up .
I’ll say again bash Brooks all you want , but Laurie really shat the bed that last 20 mins . Multiple errors that directly lead to tries .

Hastings was good for the first half then just turtled around , doing nothing in the second half.

Laurie is over rated and flash in the pan.

Simpkin was solid but wasn't ready for 80.

Bit harsh tonight on Laurie, did some good things , and he made some mistakes, unfortunately imo opinion we have a year to wait before we really see improvement, we need a genuine threat from dummy half that can act on ruck recognition. It’s one thing to see something but quite another to execute it. Dillon is not ready, he has mistakes in him and needs time to iron them out before he gets a run in the top grade, if he develops, that’s the genuine football speed you need to capitalise on second phase and make defenders make wrong decisions on set plays. Gotta say looks like Hastings was running in quick sand a couple of times tonight. We are still very lazy in defence. Tuilagi has some nice late footwork , but yeah, we had enough ball early to be 20 in front.

Positives:



Effort in D for 60 mins

We looked to have much better structure and more expansion play in attack than last year

Our line speed in defence is MUCH better than last year.

Ken M had a great game

Kelma & LL were huge although Kelma gets lazy in defence

I thought Brooks had a good game

Hastings wasnt horrible

Both centres looked sharp in attack

Simpkins had his best game and didnt suck

Was very pleasantly surprised with Peacheys defence and thought he added something in attack. I might consider starting him at 13 and bringing Joffa on later

Hastings is not the messiah

Stupid schoolboy mistakes (PTB errors etc)

Our goal line defence

We couldnt maintain intensity/energy/effort and lift when needed



Overall I was actually pretty pleased and we played much better than I expected. Even with the outs that is still a star studded team that beats ours man for man.

Let' face they got some injuries along the way but never looked like losing. Not sure if Hastings is complementing Brook's game but they didn't do it for me tonight. And btw the same old 5 tackles and give it to Brooks to kick can't be that hard to defend against...

Yeah, he cops a roasting on here and I, am at times quite judgemental of his frustrating performances but...
