Phil Rothfield: Wests Tigers facing biggest challenges of Sydney NRL clubs
October 12, 2015 12:00am
Phil RothfieldSports Editor-at-largeThe Daily Telegraph

IN the next few years the NRL is going to have to make some tough calls on expansion and the survival of nine clubs in the saturated Sydney market.

I love the traditional teams more than any others but the fact remains Sydney cannot host nine clubs in a national competition forever.

Not if they are to be competitive long term for sponsorship and crowds against the likes of Brisbane and North Queensland, the two clubs that fought out last weekend’s greatest grand final ever.

Rugby league has an average crowd of around 15,000 and it has not grown for more than a decade. To get to 20,000, the game needs to expand into growth areas. A second Brisbane team, Perth or a second New Zealand side are the obvious areas. So where does that leave the Sydney clubs? Who is most vulnerable?

My team the Cronulla Sharks were once the obvious danger but they have got their act together under chairman Damian Keogh, with the property development income, a competitive football side and the fact they still own their home ground.

In my view the team facing the biggest challenges is without question the Wests Tigers.

NRL chief executive Dave Smith told me in an interview last week that the club was not his problem.

The NRL lent them money to prop up the Balmain side of the joint venture but had absolutely no say in the operations of the club. The Wests Tigers are facing big challenges. This is a shame because even the NRL would do a better job of running the Wests Tigers than the current management.

Weekend reports that personality player Marty Taupau wants out is the latest of a series of blows that proves the administration is not up to the standards required. The fact they are still supporting coach Jason Taylor when it is so obvious he is the main cause of their problems is bordering on a scandal. This has nothing to do about the fact the person running the club is a woman. I’d be saying exactly the same if it was male chairman.

Other females in the game are doing are making great contributions. I believe Bulldogs CEO Raelene Castle is good enough to run the NRL one day. Rebecca Frizelle at the Gold Coast Titans is up there with the best chairs in the game. The fact of the matter is Wests Tigers are struggling in all the key performance indicators. It would be a blow to lose Campbelltown but the western suburbs of Sydney is already well covered. Parramatta and Penrith are power forces that will be around forever. The Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney both play out of Olympic Park. That’s four strong clubs for the people of western Sydney. Four clubs with much stronger and more appealing credentials than the Wests Tigers.

I agree with what he said.
If we try and play the same structured football as the other clubs but get poor results then we are an easy option to get rid of but if we play exciting, attacking football even if we loose people enjoy watching the games. West tigers from 2005 were always the most exciting team to watch on tv. The way we could win a game or the way we could loose a game it was never a dull moment.

"Weekend reports that personality player Marty Taupau wants out" - it was Rothfield who "reported" it - enough said.

Great news Pill!
Finally the NT Tigers. Base them in Darwin and they will be unbeatable in home games. The opposition will melt. Where do I sign?

It is obvious that Rothfield is the Tigers weakest link!!

He certainly has us in his sights. Grand finals over, pre season training has not began and most clubs are on holidays, so there is very little in the way of NRL news to fill the sport section of the papers, so blokes like Rothfield just take the easy option and make up a whole lot of crap.

Okay there are some things that are true, like we are club that bounces from one turmoil to another and our board and CEO never seem to be able resolve issues internally but to say we are a target for relocation or extinction is pure fantasy.

The best way to handle Rothfield is–-dont read his crap

Cronulla are no longer a basket case that he has inside info on, so he moves on to us.

Don't read his garbage, he's a joker. He will die from chronic Pancreatitis soon enough.

I seem to remember reading similar stuff about the Eels, but after a good second half to the season and some quality signings signings all has gone quite.

I suppose we are a soft target always plenty of dirty washing hanging around the joint in full view of the public. Even a half wit like Rothfield can find material to send his imagination flying.

The new CEO has to get everyone together and read the riot act and get some harmony back in the place its that simple

I just hope that finally the club has turned the corner in the front office because if they have not what that poor excuse for a journalist has stated could well happen,I do believe this is the last throw of the dice for the Tigers . Major decisions have to be made for the betterment of the club and if this will disenfransice any portions of the supporter base well and good, The Stadium issue has to be sorted this season one way or the other ..personally it should of happened this season with Liechardt going in place for the games at the stadium then next season make a decision on Campbelltown. As far as a training facility though important not as important as to settle on a region to finally put down a base for the future.
I believe if the Stadium situation is not sorted this season and the Tigers keep playing out of 3 grounds there gone.
The CEO has to confront these morons in the media about the rubbish journalism that is being thrown around if he is there for this club he had to get into these parasites faces ,in regards to the media at present there is probable some favours for the mates going on with the speculative media ,player manages have DEEP POCKETS IN BARS and most journalist are drunks.

Oh the irony in this is so rich and delicious it will put you into a Diabetic coma.

….........................................................

WESTS Tigers captain Robbie Farah can be a difficult and grim character.

It’s one of the reasons NSW didn’t appoint a vice-captain for State of Origin this year.

No one wanted him in the role.

Laurie Daley is too nice a person to say it publicly, but it’s true.

And it’s a contributing factor to why there is so much drama at the Wests Tigers right now over coach Mick Potter.

Gorden Tallis revealed on Triple M over the weekend that Farah had told him that to his face. He repeated it on air to Farah’s manager Sam Ayoub on Sunday afternoon.

At the after-match press conference, Farah denied saying it but Tallis is sticking to his guns and insisted the comments were made.

You only had to listen to the Tigers’ press conference after last week’s win over the Bulldogs to understand the friction that so obviously exists.

Farah tells reporters he has been at Potter for weeks, nudging him to pick Mitchell Moses in the side.

By doing so he’s either trying to take credit himself for the youngster’s outstanding performances or telling fans the coach was too slow to recognise and acknowledge the kid’s potential.

It was said with a total lack of respect for his coach.

Farah has a bit of history in this area.

He spat the dummy and fell out with his previous coach Tim Sheens when he failed to make the Test team on a Kangaroo tour of England. It didn’t matter that Cameron Smith is a future Immortal and far superior player.

Sadly, no one at the Wests Tigers has the courage to stand up to him.

In this area, chief executive Grant Mayer has a lot to answer for. He was the one who hired the old and unemployed coach Brian Smith to conduct the review that almost brought Potter down.

He is the one who hasn’t had the courage to pull Farah into line like stronger leaders would.

He is also the man who had similar issues when he was chief executive at the Sea Eagles before the board got rid of him.

On Sunday the Tigers played as one might expect they would.

Down 22-0 at half-time, they rallied in the second half but were never going to win.

Still, they remain just two points away from the top four.

The madness and stupidity of the whole situation is that Potter has proven himself an excellent coach in a short space of time.

He was the one who had the nerve to bench Benji Marshall last year when his poor form warranted it but other coaches might have not had the courage to do it.

He is the one who has carefully and cautiously introduced Moses, Luke Brooks and Curtis Sironen to first grade and has overseen the development of Aaron Woods into the best young front-rower in the game.

This doesn’t just happen. With so many outstanding youngsters, no club is better placed for the future than the Wests Tigers.

It’s just that they need some stability and a strong management that is prepared to back their coach.

You could not make this up even if you tried. ^^^Here^^^ is Buzz 12 months ago going on record as stating Farah is the issue and what is needed is a ''STRONG MANAGEMENT THAT IS PREPARED TO BACK THEIR COACH''. Now they are doing just what Buzz called for and somehow its turned around and they are ruining the club? Hollywood script writers couldn't do a better job at making this up.

Can someone please italicise that last sentence and paste it at the top of this thread, because you will see never irony the size of this magnitude on the forum ever again. It deserves to be recognized as such.

Too pissed to remember what he writes from one day to the next. The man's a disgrace to a profession which is hardly held in high esteem at the best of times.

You would think someone who works in a medium that deals heavily around the internet would be familiar with how the internet works. This is no longer 1960 Buzz where you write an article in a newspaper that people read and throw out the next day and would forget, or at the least would have no way of proving if you did a 180 on a topic 12 months later. What you say on the internet leaves a digital fingerprint that can never be erased, and with one google search, can be found in under 5 minutes. What an intelligent human being.
