Yeah that's really my ERA that face slapping era.My old man started supporting the Magpies when he moved to Australia and saw the face slapping story on 60 minutes.
My first game was the Wests v Manly game at Lidcombe May 78 as a kid with mum. Followed Wests from 75 loosely without much passion but that game in 78 was the beginning of it for me.
Always looked at the brutality as controlled aggression spilling over for a will to win for us, a type of RL Robin Hood "liberating " the battling teams and giving them a chance against a type of RL establishment where it seemed only certain teams were allowed to succeed.
The magpies delivered on their promises. They said they'd win every home game in 78 and they did, never lost a game by more than 10pts all year.
Always a feeling my boys would spill blood to win.
It was impressive.
